#SmartCitizen offers an alternative to the centralised data production and management systems used by the large corporations that constitute the driving force behind the smart city concept. The project empowers ordinary citizens to gather information on their environment and make it available to the public. Started in 2012 in Fab Lab Barcelona at IAAC, the project develops tools for citizen action in environmental monitoring and accompanying methodologies for community engagement and co-creation.
The project involves customised #sensinghardware, the Smart Citizen Kit, and a custom online platform with more than 9000 registered users and more than 1900 unique sensors. It is a free software, released under a GPL and CERN license. Over the past years, the project has been part of multiple EU funded research projects such as Making Sense, iSCAPE, Organicity, Grow Observatory or DECODE. The project has helped local communities to make sense of their environment and address environmental problems in air, soil and sound pollution.
In 2019 we present the latest generation of our platform, including the brand new Smart Citizen Kit 2.1, the fourth generation of sensors since the first launch in 2012. The new Kit includes sensors such as particulate matter, noise, temperature, humidity.
