By 2036, experts say there will be over 2.8 billion cars on the road. So traffic jams are about to get worse - especially in big cities. Smart Citiy projects are tackling exactly that problem. Can traffic lights be a solution to maximize efficiency? And is the private car dead? Our reporter Killian got an exclusive look at a smart city prototype that is bringing an old technology back from the grave to make it fit for the 21st century. What do you think about smart cities? Let us know in the comments....

Upload, Episode 1. Protagonist is murdered because his self driving car is taken over and the Protagonist has no control over his vehicle. Do you feel safe being in a vehicle where you have no control and have no opportunity to take control of the vehicle? I don't.

Cars equal freedom. You don't need to travel with the pack. You can go where you want when you want. It shocks me how easily people are willing to hand that over!

Cars don’t have to be freedom. Cars only equal freedom because everything is so far away and their is only 1 or 2 ways to get there. If city’s had a really good public transportation network or were smaller and have a decent bike network cars wouldn’t be needed. Going somewhere in a car isn’t because you have freedom. Going somewhere in a car is because you don’t have the freedom to choose.

One issue is, cars obviously have empty seats so them empty seats will reduce the space on the roads

Le probleme est toujours le meme . Le nombre de vehicules disponible . Avoir sa voiture c'est l'independence d'un service de transport public sous financé, en manque de vehicule pour repondre aux besoins individuelle. Le probleme est le nombre de deplacement par jours

Yeah, at 2:38 you make a great point that the automotive industry isn't revolutionizing the city planning. But that is the answer: newly engineered cities. Really thoughtful efficient designs like crop circle pattern. I have quite a bit of stuff that fills my house, but when I put that stuff stacked vertically on bookshelves, it works vastly more efficiently than fanning it out across my floor plan. I hope cities of the future will be thinking about stacking our transportation in vertical dimensions; highly regulated by the DOT with Hyperloops, or Maglevs, stacked at various elevations and different speeds; some commercial freight and some pedestrian. Perhaps slower, small individual autonomous pods that could be for the internal city. City planning needs a revolution and it won't come from the obsolete auto industry. It will come from open source researchers, engineers, and a well funded and regulated DOT. At a world population of 2 billion, this wouldn't be a consideration. However, at 8 billion and growing 1 billion each decade, it is essential to talk about "smart city designs."

Europe can no longer innovate because it has old buildings and roads that they want to preserve. So it’s difficult to built new infrastructure on top of that without destroying it
