Your videos are always excellent. I would add though that some clothing manufacturers specify “dry clean only” for items that could be carefully washed. They protect themselves in this way from people who wash an item and ruin it. But dry cleaning is also harmful and there are many fabrics that can be washed even if the label does not indicate that. Thanks for all your tips!

Agree, but have to be careful. We think of water as inert. And generally it is. But its hydrogen and oxygen sometimes affect the proteins in textile fibers. Mostly it’s not a problem though.

I either don’t buy anything dry clean or in the case of a shacket last year I looked at the fabric and knew it could be washed even though it said dry clean. I washed it on a gentle wool cycle and it came out perfect!

Thank you for validating not washing too often. I have had a knitted dress for a few years. I love it but maybe only wear it once a year. I have never washed it. I let it air for a day or two, carefully fold it and put it away. No smell, no damage, and ready for next time ❤

This is such an important video! Thank you very much. I was just at an event with my friends and we talked about clothes, we are all over 70 so we have a collection of clothes from many years and love to wear them. We talked about how to restyle what we have but you need to take care of them so they last. Great learning video.

Great tips! I agree with your approach. Underlayers protect clothing from direct contact with oils and moisture in our skin. I have recently discovered several brands of panties with charcoal infused liners that absorb moidture and prevent odor. I tried two brands and both worked very well. I felt dry and comfortable and believe these will be very useful on long airplane flights, working out at the gym and hot days. They could go a long way to getting a second or third day out of a pair of jeans; again, useful when traveling. Spraying vodka on garments can kill odor causing bacteria and dry without leaving a watermark; test on an non-exposed section of a garment. Hanging a garment up with good air circulation will help freshen the garment between washes. Immediately hanging up items after removal is important unless the item is going right into the laundry hamper. Dry cleaning might strip the natural lanolin and oils from the wool fibers, greatly reducing the appearance and life of a sweater, jumper or other knit . Dry cleaning bags can damage some fabrics over time. Cut off the top of an old Tshirt to make a dust cover to prutect the shoulders of off-season jackets. Store wool garments in moth-proof containers. Invest in washable jackets instead of dryclean-only. Crumpled tissue can be stuffed into jacket shoulders to help support their shape if you do not have full-shoulder-hangers. Crumpled tissue can also be used to support under a collar if they are not designed to lay flat. Iron garments inside-out to avoid unwanted sheen to the fabric surface that can make seams and hems look obvious. Thanks again. I love reading everyone's tips in the comments too. ❤

Hi Ellena: How do you keep the hanger clips from imprinting on your clothes? Is it the type of hanger you use or do you add tissue paper or something behind the clip?

A lot of dry clean clothes can be hand washed with the appropriate cleaning solution like one for delicate fabrics, one for wool/cashmere. And be careful with that shaver thingy. Some of my old sweaters literally have no wool yarn left in armpits or on the sides- I've shaved it off with these small balls.

My grandmother never dry cleaned. I remember carefully watching her washing my aunt wedding dress and it came out perfect from her care. Now I'm following her steps due to a bad experience with ruined fabrics. Learning proper care of fabrics is harder but now if It get ruined is my own fault, not a professional's I paid pretty money for their work

Very nice and easy steps. The peeling advice made me really relieves because I was sad about having so many sweaters with this issue. The peeling razor machine is already on my Christmas list! Any ideas to organize your clothes in a small wardrobe? I have to hang my sweaters because I don't have space to have them folded. Also, I dislike piles of clothes because they get messy so fast!

The only things I wash often are my pajamas. Oh, and socks and undergarments. I don’t wash things nearly as often as I did when I was younger. I wash my cashmere sweaters on delicate or hand wash them. And let them air dry. I used to have a mesh thing to air dry sweaters. But I’m not sure what happened to it. I’m way more careful with all my clothes now. My husband sticks his jeans in the hamper constantly. So I’m buying him new jeans more often.

I have always thought that if a garment looked, felt, and smelled clean, it could be worn again without washing. The younger generation seems to think clothes have to be washed after every wearing, even if they've only been on their body for an hour. If you suggest doing otherwise, they consider it "gross" and react the same as if you'd just admitted to not showering daily (which is also ok, btw).

I wash my ‘good’ clothes as little as possible as well. But be aware that your body oils will set into the fabrics and stain them. Whites & lights will yellow. Other colours can stain darker. It’s a bit of a catch 22 situation. You save your clothes by not washing as often, but you run the risk of body oil stains developing. Dammed if you do, and damned if you don’t 🤷🏼‍♀️

About the cashemire things and tumble dryer - not true. I bought my cashemire clothes from a small producer, and she definitely said that GOOD cashemire not can - it should be tumble dried. This makes it fluffier and softer after machine washing (yes, it can and should be washed in machine as well). Of course, if you are not sure about your cashemire quality, wash it by hands and dry "on air"
