Do you love the idea of grinding your dog's nails, but worry that he'll hate the grinder?
As long as you introduce the grinder slowly and associate the noise with really good food, you're likely to have a dog that wants to see and hear the grinder! This is our fourth video is the series.

Thank you so much for this! My mastiff is a rescue dog that weighs as much as I do and we had to wait until he was under for an operation to get his nails trimmed because he was so anxious and stressed by the grinder that any time we tried he would get snappy. Two less than half hour sessions trying this approach and he let me grind one of his nails with no signs of stress! Such a huge win for my huge boofhead!! Thank you thank you thank you!! 😍😍

I can't wait to try this when we get our next dog! Too many years of anxiety over this in past. Thank you!

Love this!! Awesome!! I had to do something like this with my previous dog when we moved from the city (and cement sidewalks that kept her nails short) to the country. Her nails grew like daggers and she was terrified of the clippers. Conditioning her to the Dremel worked like a charm. I didn't realize that if you can hear the nails clicking on the floor, they're too long.

Thanks for your easy video. I should have trimmed my puppy's nails. 4 years later they are long and the wick has grown out. I took to gt done but their dremel was broken. My dogs nail started bleeding so I am trying to do on my own. I have a new Hertzko that is not loud. So I will start asking for paw and treat her as you did here.

I feel terrible for what I did to my pup. So I got him a dremel and I introduced it to him with other people which was my first mistake. He was clearly in a stressed state and didnt want any part in it right at the start. So we had him on a leash and I basically held him down to get his nails ground. I defiantly set myself back with him and lost trust. I could read his body language and nobody else understood that just because we know the dremel isnt going to hurt him, he doesnt know that. So day 2, I have just been sitting there very patiently on my own and will reward him anytime he comes near the dremel. I know its going to take a lot of patience to get him to understood that he can trust me but I dont care how long it takes.

I know that feeling, I've done things incorrectly with my dogs before I knew a better way. I imagine all animal guardians go through this, especially loving ones like you. :)

I so need to do this! I haven’t had to cut my dogs nails in 3 years (I’m guessing from walking a lot) but recently it’s been to hot. Had to go to vet and after 3 people holding him down they finally decided to sedated him 😔

That dremel is loud as hell! There are dremels specifically made for dogs and they are much quieter and have a protection so hair can't get pulled in.

Shawn Kohls I know, my dog hates the vacuum cleaner, s he would try to attack a dremel this loud!

This all sounds reasonable to me, but I have mini long-haired dachshunds. Many, mini long-haired dachshunds. 3 are technically mine. We have 7 at the house and at least 5 think they're mine. My only thoughts on this are to to A. Get a lot of treats, B. Trim their Hobbit feet first and C. Repeat this with each in a room without the other dogs. Question: My dogs all immediately roll into their backs when any type of grooming is started. I have a grooming table with the 'stand up' leads, but my dogs would rather hang themselves than cooperate. What's a good technique with them on their back with their little short legs?

What do you do if the dog runs out of the room when the dremel turns on, or if he barks at it?

You want to start by making a fabulous association with the sound. If necessary, have someone turn the Dremel on in another room while you feed pieces of steak, cheese, sausage, chicken, etc. Dremel turns on = great food. Dremel turns off = great food stops.

Thanks! Just got my new boy yesterday (shephard/hound mix estimated around 2 yrs old). He doesn't follow any cues just yet and I'm still trying to figure out what motivates and excites him (besides staring endlessly at my guinea pigs -- his biggest distractions) and what scares him (so far it's just the clicker - I think it's been used as punishment in the past). I'll be watching your videos and reading your blog lots!

+1965_ Fiat Nope, my dog was six years old when I started grinding her nails. Praise and treats, praise and treats, not doing more than she's comfortable with in each session.

I never would have tried this. I have a Chihuahua that is skittish at the slightest noise. Would it be unreasonable to take 3-4 days to acclimate to the Dremel noise??

Nice video. One safety issue though -- please don't wear loose jewelry like a long necklace when using a spinning tool.
