I got pulled over at (18 years old) for good 83 in a 55 and was given a warning. The cop was really cool and we had a conversation about cop cruisers, it was cool but I know I need to control my speed.

Got pulled over for the first time the officer introduced himself and told me I was speeding. I apologized didn’t deny but he asked for my license and insurance not registration. Got a verbal warning and was on my way in less than 5 minutes.

So one time my dad got pulled over at the sand dunes in Cali and I was in the backseat (I was only like 2 or 3). My dad and my uncles had taken my cousin and I out riding (in 2 separate vehicles) and we left after them so the cop didn't see all of us. So basically the cop noticed me in the car and saw the dirt bike & 4 wheeler in the back of my dads truck and pulled him over because he'd assumed that my dad went riding and left me in the car. But my dad & uncles were taking turns between riding and watching my cousin & I, plus where we were it was legal to double ride so they would go out with us too. When the cop pulled my dad over he started telling my dad about how it wasn't okay to leave me in the car and didn't give him a chance to explain. Well then he asked for his license and called my dad Mr. Proctor (cause that's our last name) and me being little I didn't realize what was going on. So I proceeded to firmly tell the cop that "That's not Mr. Proctor, that's my daddy!!" And I guess my dad and the cop just laughed at me after that. This story cracks me up every time I hear it lmao

Came here wondering if my pullover was wrong, and, this is disheartening and also reassuring. I had an officer yell at me for going off to the next off ramp, safely changing lanes, rather than stick on the freeway; and he said I was not only fleeing but putting him in danger. This exit had 2 long uphill ramps and two shoulders, to me that's the safest place to be, and I made sure to be a little further in the ramp rather than the start to allow time for some idiot not to see us. I have family in the sheriffs, so I like to be as polite as possible, I know the hassles of their everyday life, but this police officer was way beyond peace keeping. I was waiting to fight his ticket I blatantly accepted, knowing I did no wrong, but of course it was dismissed before I had to do anything. Be nice and stand your ground.

I always carry my license in my wallet. I really don't understand why someone would leave it in the glove compartment. what if your car gets stolen and then your house gets stolen? some registrations may have your address on it. and with no registration, how will you prove it's your car?

Is it very likely to be pulled over going 75-80 mph in a 65 mph on the freeway? Especially in the left lane, most drivers are going above 75. My reasoning is that if you are not standing out in any way, and going with the flow of other drivers, even if it is faster, it is very unlikely you will get pulled over. Does this make sense?
@smartdrivetest

Hi Archie Powell - Thank you for your question. You are correct my friend. If you're simply keeping up with the flow of traffic and not weaving in and out, it's unlikely that you're going to get pulled over by police. All the best, Cheers Rick

I just recently got my drivers license and just stumbled across your channel as I was looking for what to do if I get pulled over by an officer. I personally have severe anxiety and am on meds for it that help so I don't have panic attacks all the time, but would an officer that pulls me over think I am suspicious if they pull me over and I start having a panic attack from the pure anxiety of getting pulled over and then being in the presence of an officer, I still have panic attacks from time to time and getting pulled over would definitely trigger one for me. As a kid I was absolutely terrified of the police, but then someone in my family became an officer, he has since found a different job as it got to be too much for him, but he was one of the best officers that I knew, so kind and caring, so to know that there are officers out there that are like my family member was puts me more at ease as well as knowing that they are also human beings and they are doing there job, so I definitely respect them but I'm still kind of scared of them at the same time.

Unless you're aggressively speeding or doing something dangerous--driving the getaway car for a bank job--it's unlikely that you're going to get pulled over by police. In the event that it does happen, breath, just breathe and keep your hands on the steering wheel and follow the directions of the officer. As you said, they're just people too, and most of the time it's all going to go well. Drop us a note if we can help further. It is controversial at least to mention that you should not deny what you did. Actually if you admitted you did something wrong even if you did not or even if you start guessing, you are basically giving a piece of evidence. I am not saying you should cynically denied you made a mistake but.. is it not better just to say nothing?

Hi Bloodyslayer73 - Thank you for your comment. What I was saying is that if the officer says that you were speeding, don't say, "no I wasn't speeding." If you disagree or become belligerent, that's when you're going to get a ticket. If you're pleasant with a police officer, there's a good change s/he will let you off with a warning. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

When you got pulled over, there is a device with police which records all the conversation, so if you just commit whatever they asked, there are basily you lose the last chance to trun over the case in the court, but again, it depends on what kind of offences have you are facing, small traffic offence is good to take your advice, but bigger one like speeding etc, it might not that great just to commit stright if you not intend to real speed.
@smartdrivetest

Hi Max Ma - Thank you for your comment. Police can't record your conversation without your knowledge of the recording. And when I say "don't deny what you did." I'm not saying that you confirm what you did either. To clarify, I'm simply saying that you shouldn't argue with the police. You are correct sir, ALL police wear body cams now by law, and the dashcam is facing your car and mics are live on both cameras, and any lawyer will tell you that all statments made to the police are considered hearsay in your defense and evidence in your prosecution, speaking to the police will only help convict you, even if you are completly innocent, when they ask you "do you know how fast you where going?" theyre attempting to manupulate a confession out of you, never tell them how fast you where going, thats why we have the 5th ammendment, you can always plead the 5th, asserting your right to not speak is not probable cause or evidence of your guilt

I've been pulled over a number of times and i've only ever had one bad experience getting pulled over..... That of course being my first time getting pulled over..... Other than that any time I got pulled over the stop was pretty uneventful..... I just pull over quickly and safely and patiently wait for the officer..... As soon as I see the officer walk up to my window I give them a customary greeting and allow them to speak..... Typically I only ever get pulled over for going just a bit too fast and I usually look down as soon as I see the officer to ensure I'm not speeding..... If i am, I remain calm and keep my eyes on my mirrors to see if the officer pulls out or flips around, then if I see lights come on, i'll see if they get behind me or someone else..... If they get behind me, I signal over and see if they follow me.... If they do, I know they caught me so I still remain calm and look for a place to pull over safely..... Quite a few times i've actually been given a break because as soon as the officer lets me know he caught me speeding, I automatically let them know, yup, saw my speed as soon as I saw you officer..... If they quote me lower than what I saw when i looked down though I don't contest it.....

hate to throw out that race card, but its something that can't be ignored. As a white man, your encounter with police tends to be a positive learning experience. If a driver is black, not so much, because cops tend to view black people as criminals. I realize that sweetness and honey will lower tensions, and lead to positive dialogue. However, as a black man, I have to first prove that I'm not a threat. Even with the use of polite words and soft tones, most cops will see this as an experienced tactic meant to lower his guard. In a personal encounter with suburban Detroit police, I spoke politely, and with respect for the Officer. I explained that I was a former Military Police officer myself, and that I mean no harm. This didn't prevent the officer from calling for back-up, placing me in handcuffs for the entire encounter, and subjugating me to 30 mins of questioning. To say that race isn't a factor, in encounters, is just naïve.

Hi Bryant Standifer - Thank you for your comment. I understand that these strategies are not going to work in all situations. By their very nature and culture, police are conservative. And these problems do exist. I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Hopefully, with awareness and people sharing their stories of injustice, we can move to correcting these problems. All the best, Cheers Rick

I agree with what he says yes pull over in a safe place if it takes you a couple minutes to pull off somewhere and the officer asks why didn't you pull over just tell the officer I wanted to find a safe place to pull over. Second keep your hands on the steering wheel. Do not start thumbing around for your paperwork . Yes be respectful respect goes a long way. Admit what you did wrong. Don't play stupid and ask what is the problem officer. Be honest with every question they ask. Remain calm and be patient . Say yes sir or yes mam.

It was my first time being pulled over, and mind you, I'm not old enough to drive yet. I was riding a scooter to school, minding my own business, when I hear a police siren go off and they had me stop for quite a while. I had completely missed all of my lessons, while the officers were doing who knows what, and finally, it turns out that I was breaking the law by not wearing a helmet. Had to pay a 10 dollar ticket, not a lot, but I was just in shock that I had to pay for not wearing a helmet, which was ironic because while they had me stopped, tons of scooter riders, skateboarders, roller skaters etc. had passed us, and guess what, none of them were wearing helmets... Being it my first time, I was just in shock, not really knowing to ask anything or dig deeper into the subject. Crazy...

Don't deny what you did??? That's her best advice, huh? Are you kidding me??? TWO THUMBS DOWN!!! If you do that, you are admitting that you are GUILTY and make it easier for the officer to write you a ticket, knowing you can't win in court. NOPE! You invoke your right to remain silent is the best way to go because you do NOT want to give the officer info that can be used against you.

Very great point for the first tip about not acting belligerent and hostile. That can be very tempting to do when people get pulled over for very stupid things like going 1 mph over the speed limit or getting pulled over for speeding despite going with the speed of traffic. They're tempted to do that because they think it's unfair that they got singled out of the pack of speeding cars or that they were stopped for going just a touch over the speed limit so they tend to make that biggest mistake by complaining, making nasty comments or statements to the officer, being disrespectful or rude to the officer, arguing, yelling, shouting, screaming, calling the officer names, swearing, making rude or threatening gestures to the officer, spitting at them, etc. mistakenly thinking they can get out of a ticket by arguing with them and doing all those thing when in reality by doing all that stuff, they are really getting themselves out of a possible warning and INTO a ticket and possibly additional tickets that the officer could write that s/hemight have overlook had they been polite and cooperative. What's worse is that some people who do that end up asking for a break when they already lost their chances of getting a break by acting disrespectful and hostile. Not only that, the officer will typically make note about the interaction at the traffic stop and record it and if the prosecutor or the judge sees that the motorist was acting belligerent and disrespectful, they are typically not going to be willing to negotiate, plea, or reduce the ticket down to a lesser charge or offer some type of program to have the ticket dismissed as an alternative like traffic school. In fact, the judge is guaranteed to do the opposite and throw the book at the motorist and slap the motorist with all the possible charges s/he could possibly be charged for each with the maximum penalty possible no matter the circumstances surrounding the offense, how minor and serious the traffic offense was, or how good or bad his/her driving record is if the motorist chooses to be rude, argumentative, or say nasty things to the officer thinking they can get out of a ticket by doing that when they're not. So bottom line, it is important that the motorist who is stopped is being civil, respectful, polite, and cooperative to the officer who stopped him/her because it can make a big difference between getting the best outcome (eg. warning, ticket or a lesser offense, reduced fine, etc.) and the worst outcome (getting the book thrown at the motorist,). That way it makes it easier for both the officer and the motorist, and it can make the officer feel unmemorable. It's the people that makes the officer feel unmemorable or that the officer remembers in a good way that get breaks. On the other hand, the people that the officer remembers in a bad way and/or gives the officer a hard time by acting belligerent, argumentative, disrespectful, etc. that don't get breaks. I got this tip from another video on what to do when pulled over made by an attorney who has heard and told many stories about being pulled over as well as spoken with many different judges, officers, prosecutors, and other people. Very good point Rick about not being belligerent. Thanks for the tip (even though I'm and yound driver and have never been pulled over yet). Hopefully next time when you do a video or a live stream on being pulled over, you can take my comment as part of the tips of what to do and what NOT to do when stopped by police.

Hi Brian Farmer - Thank you for your comment. And why do you believe that you don't have to give police your license when you get pulled over? All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Brian Farmer - Thank you for your reply. Form a legal standpoint, the state own's the license and you are granted the right and privileges of that license after passing competency tests. Via your license plate number and actions on the roadway, you've already agreed to give information to the police and the state authority under which that entity is granted its power. And although this thinking may working in theory, you may have some challenges exerting that right when on the side of a busy road with a police officer requesting your license who pulled you over for speeding. All the best, Cheers Rick

+Smart Drive Test I've never been pulled over but what would you assume what would happen if I refuse to give them my license would I be placed under arrest?
@smartdrivetest

Hi Brian Farmer - Thank you for your reply. I believe the least of your worries would be getting arrested. If you're arrested, which you likely will be, they'll also impound your vehicle. And you will be responsible for towing and storage of your vehicle. And I suspect that you would be charged for not producing a licence or insurance, which may or may not incur the cost of legal counsel. Some times, even though you have the constitutional right, it can be very expensive to prove that right. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

the last time I was pulled over I was in the midwest just having got off a plane from the west coast. I was in a rental car and had a 1 hour drive to my destination from the airport. I was going through a busy section of interstate through the heart of a big city and was in the far left lane. I was going the speed limit, but trying to stay in the passing lane. All of a sudden a cop pulled right up behind me, but without his lights on. I figured he needed to get by, so I switch into the next lane. He flipped his lights and pulled me over for following too closely (when i merged). It felt really forced. He clearly was following ME too closely, which caused me to switch lanes. There were countless cars in that lane who were all following eachother just as closely as I was once I merged. Yet it was a completely routine lane switch in busy traffic, i signaled and it was completely safe. I assume it was because of my out of state plates on my rental car. I received a warning and he let me go however, so it wasnt a big deal. It just makes me think twice about my actions when I have a police offer tailing me closely. my uncle once gave me a book written by a former cop about how to get out of speeding tickets. heres a couple. 1. turn your vehicle off in most situations when you are pulled over. on occasion people will try to speed off when the cop exits his vehicle to walk up to the person pulled over. turning off your vehicle shows you are no risk of flight and puts them at ease. 2. keep your hands visible during initial contact with police. They are always trained to be looking for any potential threat, wether it be drugs or violence. having your hands simply on the wheel/gear shift and clearly visible, as opposed to in your pockets or searching around the car also puts the cop at ease.

Hi brent f - Thank you for your comment and excellent information. Those are great tips about shutting off your vehicle's engine and keeping your hands in sight. As for getting pulled over, the officer may have been looking for someone else, and the vehicle you were driving matched the description he had of the other person. Thus the reason for the warning. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Big$MoneyBoss - the weather is about the same here. It is a lot colder than it should be for this time of year. It's still below freezing at night. I'll be interested to read your feedback on the video. All the best my friend, Cheers Rick

Swearing is simply saying vulgar words. Cursing is more derogatory. For example you can cuss someone out. You can't swear someone out.

One time a police officer on a motorcycle (I am not disclosing where) came over to me and asked why I was stationary on a crosswalk. Well my Lyft passengers were unable to walk over the chains along the street. I had an Lyft sign. The traffic light was going to change anyway. I said I was sorry. I didn't react when he said it was $50 fine (which is the seat belt fine in my city. and not wearing seat belts has a more immediate impact on your life than being over a crosswalk). I backed up enough to let him see I was responding to him. In my personal opinion, that was a huge waste of his time and I feel he had a lack of analytical thinking to realize a) my Lyft sign and that there were passengers in the car, b) the traffic light was going to change, c) that no one was in immediate danger, and d) he did not allow me an explanation. There are murderers and child abusers out there and people trying to cause terror. If I was a police officer and I saw at the same time someone urinating in public and another slapping a girl, I would address the abuser. There is such a thing as being too by the book.
