I appreciated the tutorials and the explanations. I am self-hosting quite a few docker containers on an Ubuntu LTS 22.04 installation using docker-compose. I wanted to understand the technology before moving onto a aggregation service like portainer or dockge. I'm still debating on whether to use one compose file for all containers or seperate compose files for each container or group of services in a container. I also recognize that I could just install TrueNAS Scale and have it manage storage and containers all-in-one OS. Currently, I have one ubuntu box and a technical debt Windows 11 box with all of my storage. My plan, over the next few months, is to buy some used hard drives and migrate all of my services and my media to an ubuntu server installation or ubuntu lts desktop installation. Then, I can reverse proxy all the services or use Tailscale and have access outside of my LAN with custom subdomains per container.

Sounds like you've got a pretty open road, so to speak. Being able to set up containers and stacks in Docker is both nice and sometimes a little daunting to think about. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I wish you the best of luck! I'll be doing another follow up to this video where I talk about streaming servers, document servers, etc. Might be after the new year, though. Thanks for watching!

I think I'd start by making a bootable usb drive with an autoinstall config file to nuke and rebuild the docker laptop. Then I wonder how few of my non-techie friends could cope with running cloudless, or even understand why that should be a good thing. Next you realise how "brittle" computers are and that any magic config you write now is likely to stop working before you die, you start working out roughly how many years you have left on the planet, and contemplate life, the universe and everything ... we're all doomed!

Agreed on the USB with automated install, but the creation is a bit more involved for the uninitiated--not that a bit of this stuff wasn't a little heavier than--let's say--plug-n-play. Cloudless should be the default and it's sad that people don't realize just what the big tech companies have over their heads, but all we can do is try to steer people in the right direction. You can lead a horse to water and all... Life is a blink of an eye, and it's not even that to the universe itself and the great calendar of the skies. Still, you've got to laugh, haven't you?
