Hey Destin, I work in the automotive manufacturing industry in central Alabama and I think the different processes and robotics and stamping presses would be something your audience would find interesting!

Hi there! I can do almost the same thing, well, I'm not as fluent as thay guy, but still pretty good I think. I am 15, and since 5 or 6, I started to train my brain talking backwards. This "training" took like 2 years I think. I can remember that I was with my family in car and I was taking some words from my memory, and pronounce it backwards. I did it to avoid boring moments, and now it's pretty nice to have this skill. I am from Romania, and I think, I have like 300 words that I still remember, and I can pronounce it immediatly backwards. That's it! Thanks for your attention!

One time, with my moms older computer, we found the microphone and “player” and noticed that it had reverse. We’d speak into it and record, then listen backwards and memorize the backwards sound. Then we’d speak the memorized backwards sound into the recorder and then play THAT in reverse. Sometimes we got it down so well that it almost sounded normal and other times it was absolutely hilarious as to how funny it sounded. Good times!!!

The 45RPM record of "They're Coming To Take Me Away" had the song backwards on the B side, so we learned to sing it that way. We were also amused when playing a reading of "The Little Red Hen" backwards, and kept coming across the sound "baby shnot". We eventually figured out it was "and she did" (a phrase that occurs often in the story) backwards. We'd amuse ourselves by playing it forward "and she did", asking "What'd she do?" "Baby shnot!" Hey, we were teenagers and fun is where you find it.

One missed phenomenon in the video is that in addition to phonetically speaking backwards, the co-ability to recall the order of words in reverse is also impressive. Just doing that in a 5-6 word sentence is quite challenging. "The dog is in the house"...".house the in is dog the". Impressive? I say so. nitseD sknahT.

This is so cool! I have long been fascinated by the plasticity of the brain, especially with kids. Years ago I had a kid in my Sunday School class who, at 5 years old, was drawing pictures of people that were better than most of the best high school art students could draw. This kid quit drawing stick figures by the time he was 2 or 3. Muscle structure, shading and everything else was in his pictures. The way he drew was even more fascinating. He continually rotated the page as he drew! Basically he was rotating an image in his head in 3 dimensions like a CAD machine. Very few adults can mentally rotate images to this level much less draw this way. A few years ago I began wondering if you could teach a child some level of mental image rotation if you started early enough. Every month we had memory verses for our 1st through 5th grade Sunday School kids to memorize. At the end of every month the same 3 or 4 out of 20 kids would have the verse memorized. As an experiment, I began turning the page upside down and had the kids read upside down. For several of the kids that soon got too easy so I had them hold it up to the light and read it through the back side of the page. It didn't take too long before even that got too easy for a few so for them it's, turn the page upside down and read it through the back side of the page. An interesting thing happened. At the end of the month, every one of the 20 kids had it memorized! The next month we went back to the normal way of reading and at the end of that month the same 3 or 4 kids had it memorized. When we went back to upside down reading, I introduced a new twist by printing everything out using a, "Sans Forgetica" font. That font leaves out lots of pieces of letters and forces the brain to work harder to fill in the missing pieces. Another interesting, unexpected thing happened. Our little 1st graders who were struggling to read normally, got very good at reading in a very short time. For the kids, this was a challenge they loved doing but it was also interesting how virtually none of their parents would even try.

Great video, this topic has resulted in hours of fun with my nieces and nephews. Around the campfire we discovered "Well I'm Trump". Before you record well I'm trump and play it backwards, try to figure out what word is is backwards. You'll be shocked! We laughed for a long time on this one! Everyone had to say it into the backwards talking app to verify that it really worked! Keep up the great work Destin.
@andrewpeachey54167 жыл бұрын
Okay, so when I saw the title of this video, I thought he was going to say the words in reverse order. Kind of like reading right-to-left. Granted, what he did was probably cooler than that, but hold up and let's think about the connotations of actually reversing your sentences. Consider the answer to a normal question; "How are you?" -- "you thank, fine I'm". Simple enough, but when you begin to get up to long sentences and conversational level phrases, you have to think so much further ahead than a normal speaker would. If I want to string a sentence together, I start at a logical point, say what I mean, and then conclude. However, to set that up in reverse, I have to know exactly how I'm going to make the point in order to correctly finish or 'start' my sentence. Maybe I'm reading a lot into nothing, but that feels like a much more interesting and complicated breakdown of language as much as cool brain skills.
@thishandleistaken10117 жыл бұрын
The English language relies on word order for meaning. That's what makes it so hard to reverse the order of words. Many other languages don't rely on word order.
@andrewpeachey54167 жыл бұрын
Terran Loyalist I hadn't thought of that. So would it be less difficult I'm other languages, only speaking English, i really cant imagine the concept of a sentence not relying on word order for meaning. I'm aware of variations in word order within European languages, which i guess is why English spoken by non-natives often is very obvious to a fluent speaker, despite all the words being correct.
@thishandleistaken10117 жыл бұрын
Some languages have many different tenses and conjugations of words to indicate what word is referring to what other word (basically). I think latin is an example of a language that doesn't really rely that much on word order.
@andrewpeachey54167 жыл бұрын
Terran Loyalist Ah Latin, that ancient nemesis. Thanks for the insight! I do feel like this would be an interesting topic though, especially to see how different dialects help or hinder.
@thishandleistaken10117 жыл бұрын
I've heard that an aboriginal Australian language doesn't really use relative left/right, and instead they always use north/south/east/west. Their mental maps all have n/s/e/w built into them though, so they memorize north in each location.
@wheelsndealz4 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of the show Twin Peaks. They had parts where people spoke like this, which means the actors had to learn the lines backwards so it could be played like that. You can actually tell that the actor is having to think about how to speak in reverse just like he's doing here.

I have 1 question for you two : If i write a word on a paper like "president" and i tell you to pronounce it backward, do you first pronounce it forward in your head or not ?
@pur3kill3d10322 жыл бұрын
@@hadrienchenal1597 Hey, a friend sent me this video because I used to do this back in elementary school, and was pretty decent at it. Since you never got a reply, I'll explain my process. So first I take a sentence and mentally recite it in reverse order. So when I think the sentence "I have a cat", my internal monologue recites "cat a have I". Then with each word I visualize the mouth movements forwards and immediately speak those movements in reverse before I forget them. It seems like this guy is doing the same, or very similar process. As he gets caught up on multisyllabic words. And longer phrases got a bit jumbled up at the end(beginning). And no, there's no way to do it in reverse. You'd have to be able to memorize an incomprehensible string of sounds and rearrange them in your head, memorize the new arrangement of random sounds and visualize each individual mouth movement.
