I adore this picture, it's as if Manet has just turned his head quickly to glance at the scene and then recreated it from memory with this brief glance. But that gives it its sense of immersion and practical realism - if not photo realism.

There is a huge interplay here of geometry - specifically lined. The lined of the wrought iron fence but also the lines in the lady's dress, in the girls plaid bow, the woman's hat, and ultimately in the trains - rail lines. The three branches represent nature's curved lines. This is really an interplay of nature vs modernity.

A "great, favorite, and hard to read" intro certainly got my attention. My attention was kept throughout. It was very interesting to hear how a painting I wouldn't look at and think of as "intensely modern" is exactly that (e.g. I don't think of loose brushwork when I consider modernity).

I don't think this painting is all that mysterious.
