I have seen this museum and painting myself last month in Beaune, it is so impressive. The grisaille is extremely beautiful, very detailed. The altarpiece itself is magnificent, so bright and wonderfully executed. I hope you will talk more about Northern Renaissance pieces, like Van Eyck or many more.

Thank you very much for this video. I have been to Beaune this summer and was very much impressed by the Hôtel Dieu and this altarpiece.

Very interesting. I wonder if you guys could talk about Vermeer's View of Delft some time. That painting is so beautiful.

+Liam Keighley We recorded an audio about that painting when we were in The Hague last year. We hope to produce the video before too long.

+Smarthistory. art, history, conversation. Is there any chance of covering more of Dix' work in the future? I obviously don't know your schedule, but I'd love to see some more of him. Especially the work on war.

Indeed, a helpful explanation. The 15th century has generally been a time of an astounding clarity, simplicity, and colorfulness of painting, but such a vividness and humor still embedded in the language of Medieval forms nonetheless must appear as outstanding and as a surprise. Particularly, the faces of those two men who get into heaven (3:35) so vividly resemble physiognomies I know from the 20th century, myself, that an era as long ago as the renaissance here all of a sudden is revealed as just around the corner. The maiden shown together with the two gentlemen, like the latter, is exhibiting so funny a streak of arrogance, she downright seems to jump out of the picture, into the present, having been eternalized not only by Christ but also by van der Weyden, and not only in heaven but also on the Earth.

I'm noticing some things in this version that I didn't catch the first time. I think I was too busy reeling from the high levels of hater required to physically drag someone else to hell, lol. Gabriel's peacock-like wings and the angels holding coats of arms definitely caught my eye this time.
