I am team hub - in fact I have Three - legacy smart things, Hubitat as my main, and augmented with Home Assistant. My favorite automation is one where Amazon delivers our packages INSIDE our garage with MyQ ... it notifies us, locks the access door from the garage to the house if it is open (it is locked if we are gone), unlocks it 10 min after all garage doors are closed AND no presence inside the garage, and records 10min of video from 2 cameras inside the garage while they are delivering.

Thank you for pointing out everything that Google Home can do. As someone new to automations and being a little broke, i just connect everything to Google Home. That way, my non-techy spouse can also use everything. It's simple, it's easy, and it works (the automation part, not the speaking to Home devices part). This is an easy way to simplify life so THANK YOU for sharing what can be done with Google Home. I hope you can make a video of yourself physically showing us the automations and how to set them up because, at this time, the only thing i know how to do is 'If it's 11 p.m., dim these lights' or 'If it's 7 a.m., turn these lights off'. I wouldn't know how to set up some of the more complicated stuff but i want to learn!

Got a tip for your switch issue at 12:40 - instead of trying to find a pair of smart switches and bulbs that work together, you can simply wire the bulbs so they're always on and then use automations with the switches to control the bulbs. Just run power in to the switch, but not out. Works like a charm for me, and works with any ecosystem!

I've been into smart home devices for last 4-5 yrs. I was inspired to buy a hub seeing one of you video how lightening fast and responsive the home automation becomes just with the help of a hub. Ever since I got myself a hub I cannot stress enough for a hub in any smart home automations. The wifi automations are highly unreliable if you do not have a stable internet connection and I hate why so many companies produce cheap wifi garbage that requires a constant internet as a must to properly function in home automations. I used to get various failed or delayed automations on my wifi bulbs and door sensors where it would take 5-7 seconds lowest to trigger an automation or sometimes not respond at all! but with the help on a hub its almost as fast as snap of a finger. Never ever going back to wifi hubless automations.

6:00 I have tried and tried to get this working, no matter what, the FP sensor either picks up ghosts or detects people slightly out of the 'bed' zone and boom lights turn on. I've added some difficulty to it because I want it to sense both me and my wife and if either of us are in bed, only turn on the nightlight, otherwise turn on full light. But have not got it to work at all. Maybe a video idea you can try? when going over some more uses for the aqara sensor? Anyways thanks for the content!

I have a couple of LED night lights by my kitchen sink, plugged into a 3 in 1 outlet strip - I have looked for something simple that would sense the nightfall, turn these on, then off again in the am - the sensor would need to be somewhere not close to these lights, as in a windowsill. I have Apple computers, and an iphone.

I'm kind of allergic to "Cloud connected devices". So while these automations are awesome, I have no idea how to do this in a local-only Home Assistant (yes, all my smart stuff sits in a seperate VLAN where only HA has some internet access). Could you make a video about such automations, but skip everything that relies on anything cloud? I have a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 hub using ZHA and a Conbee2 flashed to Matter. I don't have anything for Matter yet though.

I saw in a video where someone had a humidity sensor that would turn on their exhaust fan if they forgot to. What I want to know is what is that sensor and can it be set up the opposite way. I want a humidity sensor that will shut off my exhaust fan once levels go back to normal. We don’t have trouble remembering to turn on the fan. I think a lot of the stuff with a "hub" would work minus the phone notifications since his "hub" is actually mostly Home Assistant, though I imagine some devices are cloud controlled. As for the rest, I guess it depends on how Google Home works (if like Samsung SmartThings the answer is No, if Apple Homekit it'd largely be yes/simolar but I imagine the scripting would be more limited) and what you mean by "internet" (do you mean broadband uplink or also the local wi-fi?). A lot of the end devices are matter over thread in his examples so as long as his wifi is up, the actual hub "in his "no hub" examples it's google home, but in reality probably HA) will receive the signals either directly or via a border router.

All the Google Home automations require the internet. I’ve talked about it in previous videos on why I prefer a hub. This was more a look of what’s possible without the hub but yes I could have mentioned the local automations as a benefit of a hub. It’s difficult to know what to talk about and what to leave out because this video could quickly be 3 times as long. Especially since I’ve done dedicated videos on the topic.

A humidifier in the bathroom, night lighting, lighting of shelves in cabinets, emergency light in case of a power outage - all this is I could implemented using dumb devices. Would be great to mention using Google Nest display in the future or the "contact" point for these devices. Not all the people have a nest display or any display. You made it sound a bit too easy to configure it, in this case just the sensor and Google which is not enough. Found the hardway after buying Aqara P2 sensor and not having the right hub for it. Edit*: I don't want to sound too harsh, I use Google, Alexa and experimenting a bit with HA but I consider myself a beginner that falls easy 😁 in trying stuff only to not research it long enough or buying on impulse when seeing a great video (I watch some of yours for inspiration). I started with Google and I have only first generation, no display but will add in time that also.

Google - depends on their "strategy of the week". This will probably all be "retired" next week and replaced with a new "AI" automation system with a higher subscription level and a higher need for access to your personal information. No Cloud, No vendor Apps, and No Hub per vendor - Home Assistant will do nicely. Try privacy, choice, and sustainability, without vendors wanting control of your home or pounding you with unnecessary marketing.

@tychay
@tychay 5 ай бұрын
Technically not, a Google Home is a limited hub while a HA configured eliminates the need of another hub. But consider who would care about a video about "automations without a hub." That would either be someone who is on an ecosystem already: for most of us either Google or Apple. Those of us who upgraded to Home Assistant wouldn't care because another hub is just maybe a more convenient way of not having to buy and set up a dongle or proxy for whatever Thread, Zigbee, Z-wave, or whatever (bluetooth, IR blast, RF). Now he could have been more specific and said "in a typical Google Home setup without an additional hub" but honestly this level of detail is not something the target would care about. As for me, I'm on Apple Homekit when I'm not already in Home Assistant so the only thing I found relevant is which automations he still uses, as well as you can see the compromises you'd have to do to use thread or wi-fi in place of Zigbee (for the most part here).

I don't understand what this video is. Two sponsors in one video? It has to be sponsored by Google because there's no mention of other hubless systems like Alexa, Apple, Smart Life, etc. And even then, regular viewers know you use Home Assistant in your home, not Google, but you're talking like you have this all set up? Not mad, just really confused.

@SmartHomeSolver 5 ай бұрын
Sorry if this video was confusing. I’m happy to explain though. First, this video only has one sponsor and that’s Panasonic. Google has never given me any money and I have no incentive to cover the Google smart home system. The reason I picked Google as the system is because of the low bar to entry and what it’s capable of doing. I think I bought my Nest Hub display version 2 for about $50 on sale. Yes Apple could also fit into the “hub-less” category but it costs more and the automations couldn’t do half of the examples I showed. So I’m showing what’s possible. Yes I still use Home Assistant and I talk about the advantages of my “hub” (Home Assistant) throughout the video. There are lots of people who subscribe to this channel who do not use Home Assistant. I like to make videos for them as well and show where some of the limitations are if they choose not to add a hub to their smart home.

Yep there are compromises for sure. I’m not saying it’s better to not use a hub but more of what’s possible and what’s not. I’ve made plenty of videos recently saying how much I like Home Assistant for reliability, privacy, and all those things. Some people don’t care about Google using their data so to each their own.

I love this but.. Google Home *IS* effectively a hub... :)

As someone who prefers hub based subsystems because they tend to be bulletproof and then just tie all the heavier lifting with Home assistant… this video was complicated….

Not sure why the heavy emphasis on using Google in this video. I would have preferred it just not be mentioned and just talk about the automations in general. For the garage door example, he mentioned the Google Script Editor but, IMO, should have also mentioned making a group for the garage doors in HA, or whatever Alexa or HomeKit need. I didn't finish the video...

Basically hubs are only necessary if you have Zigbee or Z-Wave devices.

I’m still using Apple and Home Assistant as my main setup. This was just showing my favorite automations I use everyday and if it was possible to set them up in the Google Home system.
