Hello SmartLess, my old friend- we’ve come to talk with you again. We’ve got diamonds on the soles of our pod this week, baby angels; It’s Paul Simon. And when it comes to name-drops, in Paul’s words: “I can give you John Lennon, but I can not give you Mao Zedong.”

This is when Smartless is at its best, IMO! I got so much from this! I'm a musician and huge Paul Simon fan. Listening to him talk about an octave being divided into 42 micro tones is well music to my ears. Also, about dissonant tones not having to sound displeasing, especially describing church bells in the distance. This is gold. I wish we could have had more! And yes, why hasn't he scored more films? I look forward to the possibility of him doing more of that! Lastly, Paul seemed more relaxed than he has in most interviews. I think podcasts are a better medium for him, and the three of you made it pretty perfect. Love you guys and love Paul Simon! Great episode 👏 👌🏾 👍🏽

@ Jason Bateman , I’ve loved everything you’ve ever done . I’ve watched it all , and I love you’re sister too , thanks for being a constant . And take a dang college course on anything you’re interested in you’ll love it and you can do it wherever you are ! Just take online classes . Start with one or two ! It’s addictive . There is a never ending catalogue of interesting things to learn . It’s nothing like high school . It’s way better

Hearing Paul Simon talk about the pleasing/emotional effect of say, churchbells in the distance, & that there is some kind of 'call' in that which we respond to takes me right to Train In The Distance.. he imbued that quality so perfectly, so beautifully in a song written decades ago -- and here he is, still hung up on it ❤ He is truly a beautiful thinker

I just listened to this podcast , it was so good ! @ Will Arnett , I discovered in the past few years doing my ancestry that 1/4 of my family tree are French Canadian settlers that settled the Catholic St Louis everything . The stories are Insane ! Why haven’t these stories been told ? One of my Grandparent couples are the Grandparent’s of Marie Laveau , a mother superior who did the first exorcism in Canada Marie Barbier , and at least 2 Prime ministers ! Their other son was murdered trying to claim Texas for St Louis . His son was the first child born ( white European ) in Texas , first Europeans married in Texas , and they were all murdered by natives in Texas . I feel like Canada has been holding out on me ! There names are Gilbert and Mari Catherine De Lavau . There’s a portrait of their daughter and son in law in Notre Dame Cathedral there in Canada . Toussaint Beaudry ! This story is amazing ! Why are you all holding out on us ?

Yeah, kind of surprising (and disappointing) that these three had never heard of Bob and Ray before, when they are essentially doing what Bob and Ray mastered years ago.

Will arnett from the start geez , my fiancé literally knows every single word to bojack horsemen like we watch the episodes and she’ll literally be like “ good morning sun good morning trees good morning busy buzzy bees. Good morning sarah lynn , good to see you sarah lynn the tulips and chrysanthemums are really coming in”. And yes she had to help me write that. But yes great voice and acting like she watches your cop show and she just started on arrested development… finished it in two days. And is rewatching it now. She gets your humor on another level like she is so into bojack deep and then now she likes just watching things with you in it! So thanks man and if your ever doing a podcast on February 19th can u say happy bday Theresa If you have time! She said thanks and yeah it was nice while it lasted !!!- bojack quote

Great listen but Sean, you have that SNL sketch backwards. The sketch has all these strangers and normal people coming up to Paul on the street and he remembers everyone, (paraphrasing) ‘yeah you were at the concert in the park, you were sitting in a plaid blanket under an elm tree, you changed your hair’…this keeps happening with comedic levels of accuracy and then at the end the real Garfunkel walks up and he has no idea who he is :) 18:10

Even though vexed by some truly cringeworthy host quotes, Paul Simon's exceptional coolness had me feelin' groovy. Paul's Graceland masterpiece was my main divorce jam,,,,, "she comes back to tell me she's gone, as if I didn't know this, as if I didn't know my own bed, as if I never noticed, the way she brushed her hair from her forehead, and she said losing love is like a window in your heart, well everybody sees you're blown apart, everybody sees the wind blow, I'm going to Graceland.... I have a reason to believe we ALL will be received in Graceland". His next record, The Rhythm of the Saints, is just as good in its own sort of mystical Amazonian way! "and all of these spirit voices ruled the night",,, awesome. Get 'em both now! Our limited supply is very nearly gone!

Bye... don't share this much on YT. It's 2023. Graceland though... you been? It's better than marketed. Elvis was a rare human. The squash court with the lounge is lost in time.

I absolutely loved this moment with Paul Simon, thank you! Every time I discover new things about great people in what seems at first like simple banter. Something Paul said about not thinking about the audience (relating to Miley Cyrus) when he was on stage, and rather concentrating on the musicians made me pause. Of course it’s easier for him to be able to concentrate to what he’s doing, he’s an older experienced white guy who hasn’t been groomed to be a girl star at a really young age. It makes a huge difference on how you relate to the world. A lot of women when they age decide to take a step back from the people pleasing situations they were conditioned to be in. It’s a whole process to go back to respecting our authentic selves with our true boundaries as women. I hope Paul Simon wasn’t comparing himself to Miley and just bounced back on her experience of touring to talk about his own… Still, I found it a bit unaware.

Love the show. Great dynamics and interaction between the three of you and with your guest. Only thing I think that nags at me with each episode is when you talk about your single listener single. And about how humble you are that they would listen to you…..yeah maybe it’s that they’re tuning in because of your guest……
