+themcbobgorge many companies advertising larger pixel because non tech savvy would think that is better like example normal people would not understand why Htc use smaller pixel over the higher one, or (the rumor) why samsung galaxy s7 (will) use 12mp instead of 16mp or 18mp. some people just say nah it has smaller pixel somekind like that. sry my eng.

A similar thing can be said about all aspects of smartphones. More does not always equal better. +Ryan Gunn That's an M8 problem. I have one, I would know. Has to do with a bad, cheap coating on the lens that scratches super easy, not the lens itself. You need to scrape the coating off (I used toothpaste and a qutip, or some kind of car polish). There's a thread in the Android Central forums dedicated to it, if you can find it.

Any real photographer will tell you that the camera which produces the most accurate results is also the most preferable. You can always edit a photo to get a desired look, but you want to make sure that any image you're working with was accurate to begin with.

Yeah nice try for pushing the iPhone there. But any "real" photographer, knows that smartphone cameras are a joke to begin with... Apple's products are not legitimate solutions for "real" or "professional" photographers - as much as I'm sure their consumer base pretends they are.

+Harrison Brady I think the closest I've seen a phone get to being like a DSLR is the LG G3,but to be honest that's based on the experience and not really on the photos. And while i'm sure apples camera enabled devices could never replace the likes of a Nikon or a Canon camera I do think their Macs are pretty good for photo editing, I won't act like they're the only solution but I do think they're one of many good solutions

I dont wanna start a war here, but every photographer knows that even a shitty smartphone can take great pictures. It all depends on what u expect from it. I dont expect my phone to take lowlight shots and i dont expect a lot of bokeh (background blur) and when it comes to processing i dont wanna mess around with a shitty jpeg after each picture. I want the smartphone camera to do that for me otherwise i would shoot RAW

Thank you for making this *MKBHD*! There are way too many people that just think more megapixels means better camera. Smartphone cameras are getting a lot better, but due to restrictions of the sensor size in them, it will be forever before they can produce the same quality as a DSLR for example :)
@thesagarmahapatra

Well, There's products like the Sony QX1 that have APSC DSLR like sensors and can be attached to your smartphone Via NFC, Only thing being they're expensive af. And man are you all over youtube :P, Be it Buzzfeed or MKBHD.

Sagar Mahapatra That's the price you pay for new technology unfortunately, but there's also the added bulk, which goes against one of the big advantages of smartphone cameras is their portability. Sony are one of the pioneers that are trying to bridge the gaps in the camera market in the most unique ways though and I'm very much a big fan of theirs for doing so :) And yes, I'm on quite a channels on KZbin :)

Everyone around me seems to judge the camera based on MegaPixels alone and it's super annoying. They'll see 2 phones and say this one is better just because of that. I do prefer more pixels but it's not the only thing in the camera.

I think at 1:30 you are wrong. The ligh absorbent does not depend at all in the number of pixels, but the surface actually does. The same light enters the lens whether it has 16 or 4 MP, as long as they cover the same surface (have the same aperture)

+UniZebra i disagree. 41mp is good for crop, but on such a small sensor it's a disaster especially in any place that isnt bright as day. even on full frame sensors (that are like 5-7 times the surface area of the lumia 1020 sensor) suffer compared to full frames in the 20-24mp range. i was going to get a lumia 1020 just for the camera, but after looking at it compared to other cameras i quickly realized it isn't great at all.

@dr.wumbo8552
@dr.wumbo8552 6 жыл бұрын
onee That's one thing that has always been bad about budget smartphones, the camera. No matter how good the phone is you can almost always tell the difference between a flagship phone and a budget phone by the camera. And it's all because of the profit. Obviously the company wants to make a lot of profit but they have to start at a budget phone level because they don't got the reputation like Samsung and Apple have. So if they want to become the next Samsung or Apple they need to make a good smartphone that's still kinda cheap and they still want to make money. But good cameras take a lot of money not just for the hardware but the software too because you have to pay someone to code the software for that. Hope this helps😁

Ele não ta falando de smartphones específicos, ele tá falando de "CÂMERAS" de smartphone, em geral. A tecnologia nelas.

"more isn't better" When it comes down to picture quality, if the hardware and software are similar, the higher megapixel count will produce much better pictures. Sorry guys, Megapixel count does matter.

+Sergio Velasco, Not really with most phone sensors. If the lens is letting in the same amount of light, and the senor is the same size and similar spec, just a 10 megapixel and a 15 megapixel version, the image will basically look the same when you scale the either image up/down, you wont really get increased detail and clarity, because you'll get more noise with the higher megapixel version due to the less light per sensor pixel.
@servel2

Zac D Do explain why most DSLR cameras are 20-30+ MP instead of being 10-15mp. There's a whole episode of Pocketnow weekly dedicated to camera sensor and picture quality. I recommend you watch it, a higher megapixel count is always better than a lower megapixel count. Obviously MP count isn't the the epitome of why a camera is good, but it is always good to have a higher megapixel count if possible.
@ZacDonald
@ZacDonald 8 жыл бұрын
Because DSLRs don't have to worry about all the extreme limitations of cellphone cameras (cost, size, depth, amount of light), when a cellphone sensor, you are typically trading number of megapixels with quality/accuracy/noise of those pixels. It's really a balancing act. As sensors get better or larger, you can get more megapixels while keeping or improving the quality of the image. With flagship cellphones they are all using very similar senors and they are all making similar trade offs. With DSLRs there's so much more variation in quality and size of sensors, and people are willing to pay the price premiums for better sensor, but not many people are going to pay an extra $100-200 for a better cellphone camera.

+Sergio Velasco geez another guy that doesnt know how sensor inside of the camera works. Firstly: 1. There will always a different between brands in terms of sensor design. Even though many models might have sma pixel count. 2. Pocketnow is not a calibre photography website. You should go to something like DP review or Photography Life. Don't believe why big sensor with less pixel are better than small sensor with 20mp or more like you mentioned? Well take a nikon D4 with only 16mp vs nikon d610 with 20 plus mp side by side in low light to compare. You can straight away tell which the clear winner

1. Larger sensor size does not improve low light performance because the lens will need to spread out the light over a larger surface area which lowers the intensity. The result is that each receptor gets exactly the same amount of light. 2. Fewer, larger photoreceptors leads to less noise per inividual pixel but more, smaller receptors give more samples. This means that resolution-normalized measured SNR for the full photo is the same. 3. The aperture number does not tell you how much light the lens collects, it tells you how large the aperture is relative to the focal length, as a result, a camera with f/1.4 could collect LESS light than one with f/4.0 if the sensor size is not the same. To demonstrate; the iPhone 6s has aperture f2.2 which is equivalent to f/16 on a lens design for full frame. This is due to the crop factor of 7.21 in the iPhone. Dude I love these things! There are a lot of phones out there which I don't care about, especially after buying a new phone (which I recently did) so most of the phone reviews I don't watch anymore (I watched all of them when I was deciding what phone to get though (LG G4) so I'm not complaining lol). However these informative reviews videos I think are great! I love this and the chipgate video! Please keep these sorts of videos coming, thanks :)

Marques, you should have also made it clear that low light performance and background blur are related to the ratio between sensor size and lens aperture. For example, the iPhone 6s has a sensor 7,21 times smaller than a full frame camera (35mm equivalent). So, it's f2.2 lens multiplied by that crop factor results in a equivalent aperture of circa f16. That's not good for low depth of field photos and why, specially in low light conditions, pictures from smartphones have much more noise (because they need to compensate with a higher ISO).

Zé Caetano Very right. It's kinda a scam to express the focal length in full frame without changing the f stop number. The equation is flawed. Anyways, your welcomed.
