​@@gustawkrzewicki1496 If you want to get specific.... The actual explaining begins at exactly 0:45. The outro begins at 19:01. In between, I suppose the actual creation of the level can count as an explanation. So there's 18 minutes 16 seconds of explanation, which is less than 20.

It took me a lot of time to figure it out but if you are facing a problem with your character walking through the trees and rocks, then only adding collision wont work, go to the foliage mode, then scroll down until you find the (collision preset) panel and then select block all dynamics. Hope this helps!

If you get the issue at 10:00 where you drag in the ocean and can't get your landscape back to its original look, go into the "WaterBodyOcean" details, search for "terrain" and under "Water Heightmap Settings", change the "Blend Mode" to Max. Then scroll all the way up and manually lower the oceans height. Hope this helps some people :)

this was a fantastic tutorial. I'm trying to make my first game and I've been really stuck. I found this and now I'm definitely going to go back to watch the whole Lyra series, maybe I'll finally get somewhere!

@@S4GGY it's a slow thing. I'm not the most artistic so learning how to sculpt in blender has been a journey. Add to that the actual game making itself and I find myself doing the whole thing in parts. I now have a map, a character, an adversary and everyone can move... next is objectives then, who knows, equipment maybe or a start menu. There's so much to it that I just had never thought about but it has been fun. Thanks for asking. How's your game dev journey treating you?

@@S4GGY what part are you stuck on? I find this whole thing to be an exercise in eating an elephant: one piece at a time. You make a plan thorough plan then break it into tiny bits: make a character walk, make a room for the character to walk in, etc etc. I still get stuck a lot because i lack a lot of skills.

I've been using unreal for years and I had no idea you could just add an ocean like that. I always made a plane and assigned a water shader and a custom post process volume. That alone was worth watching this for me!

I'm totally blown away at the ease of this tutorial. I've been messing with UE for almost 2 years now and I haven't found a landscape tutorial that looks as real to a game as this one. And so simple. Thank you for all the help. I had almost given up on creating an outside environment. UE5 rocks! I'll be checking out the Easy Building system too fore sure. Subscribed.

I didn't think making a 3d game space and game was realistic for me to get into but after watching this, I defiantly want to get this unreal engine 5 and see if I can make this game idea I've had for a while. Great tutorial, Ill be back to reference this to learn what I'm doing once I download the program.

love the video super helpful, the one thing I did not enjoy was closing and opening easy build systems 10 times when i could have just migrated everything i needed all in one loading of the map. Should not have to go back and forth constantly.

guys if you have water problem all you need is to add water first and then make landscape an adjust where u like in that case your island base must be high or the water will glitch

I really enjoyed this tutorial, it was a lot of fun. The only Issue I had was that I wasnt able to find a way to "hole" my landscape so if I have a building with stairs going down to an underground tunnel I couldnt like erase the terrain near by or remove it (Grass texture would stay and if I tried to add a LandscapeVisibilityMask for opacityMask it just broke stuff)

go to landscape and to blueprint, add a new layer, switch from "none" to CustomBrush_Landmass, Make it a cap and move the whole layer down and boom, hole Hope it helped! :D i have no idea how to get rid of the underwater effect though so please tell me if you figure that one out! :)

Great tutorial. Easy to follow. One thing I can't figure out. How to make it so your player cannot pass through the trees and rocks. Right now my player can walk through all of the painted foliage.

For anyone having issues with the ocean water around the island being higher than the rest of the ocean around it, thus creating a weird lil gap where your landscape ends, the only fix I can figure out how to do is this: Start the level by making the smallest possible landscape (64x64). Then, before doing ANYTHING, drag in the ocean. Then scale the ocean splines to roughly the center of the map. Go ahead and select the 64x64 landmass you just made and delete it, then go back to the Landscape mode and make a NEW landscape, this time as big as you want. NOW go ahead and follow the tutorial from the beginning and make your island. For some reason the engine puts a box around whatever landscape you have at the time of dragging in the ocean, and this creates a gap between the water directly above your landscape and the rest of the ocean in the distance. So by making that initial landscape small as possible the ocean gap is only 64x64 instead of the same size as your new landscape. This is the only way I've found to fix it. That gap is still there, but it's now below your island and out of sight.

I found a better solution! Go to your WaterZone instance (it was created together with the ocean) -> rendering -> Reset its "extent in tiles" value by pressing the arrow right of the numbers

If you're having problems with the height of your water: create two viewports side by side, one in view of choice and one in wireframe/left or right view. UNCHECK affect heightmap in WaterBrushManager Look at wireframe viewport and figure out where the water is supposed to be based on the shape of your island CHECK affect heightmap in WaterBrushManager Move waterbodyocean (represented by the long horizontal blue line in the wireframe viewport) along the Z axis until it reaches the place where it needs to be UNCHECK affect heightmap in WaterBrushManager again Confirm water looks right in the other viewport

As always excelent tutorial! One open issue. When rocks, stones and trees are ''painted'' as a folliage there is no collision and the player goes through them. When all the assets are set as Right click/Asset actions/Bulk edit via property matrix/Static mesh/Body Setup/Collision Complexity ->Use complex collision as simple and dropped one by one then they have collision. But even in this state when painted there is no collision.

all you have to do is go into foliage and ctrl click all of the foliage you want with collision and go down into the menu that will pop up after clicking on those and scroll down till you see collision presets and change it to block all collision. i hope this helps you and anyone else who had this problem.

Hello, the video is very helpful in many ways. Unfortunately, I am having a slight problem where the grass won’t show up after adding the “Weight-Blended Layer (normal)” to the “Layer Slope”. Grass appears at 9:50

well that would basically be this without adding water but the one problem would be getting the rest of the landscape to not be visible or collision-enabled. im guessing the building would be made out of 3d assets, unless you want to spend the time trying to make a giant temple in unreal engine with no assets

@@EvokerKing Thank you Hex, I did try some megascan assets to build a small floating hill. However, the shape is really hard to scale and adjust (looks so fake). Maybe I should spend more time playing around with UE and find more ways.

One tip: if you dont see the grass render when you get close, make sure you have MI stylised landscape, not MM

When I click on the imported Landscape , am I supposed to double click on it? If I dont do so, I don't see a "Landscape" drop down menu or heading on the right. If I do double click on it (I have version 5.3) a separate box opens with a "Details" and "Layer Parameters" tab. Also after the original migration from EasyBuildings a message "Landscape 1: Actor with Physical Materials needs to be rebuilt". When I try to resolve by clicking "Build Landscape" I get 3 error messages. They are "StaticMeshActor_1 Large actor receives a pre-shadow and will cause extreme performance hit unless bCastDynamicShadow is set to false." and "LandMassBrushManager_C_0 Large actor receives a pre-shadow and will cause an extreme performance hit unless bCastDynamicShadow is set to false". Update: I tried starting from scratch and creating a new file but as soon as I go into Landscape mode it says "Landscape 1: Actor with Physical Materials needs to be rebuilt"

Everytime i try and change the landscape material to what you do it turns into a cloud material. Its the exact same name as yours i followed what you did 5 times. Everything is still invisible, or blending in with the sky?

If the spline points disappear even if you got the brush selected, try just restarting unreal, seem to be an bug

I created island and it was easy for me as i learn a lot from this channel...back days too.. but still can't solve one issue: - Player Start I place (in correct position not under landscape) but still player falls under the map . Solution: was to delete that and just hit play and it will spawn player auto but again character i can play with only seems to be able to navigate but other bots just fall under the landscape. I remember, I did fix similar issue at past but not exactly how.

Videos would be much more helpful if you did a little more explaining "why" and "how" For example, Why are we using blueprint brush instead of sculpt? Any interactions with the keyboard and mouse that aren't immediately intuitive, should mention which key or button you press the first time you perform that action.

How to set up a collision of the trees and rocks that already painted? Ok got it, click painted foliage, go to foliage mode, select all rocks and trees and edit collisions setting to PhysicsActor. Done!

HI there smart Poly, I'm having some problem in my indie game, can you help? Issue: I'm making an open world game (using UE5 and world partition system) everything seems to work fine but then I added a mountain using the landmass tool, after that when I try to load the whole map the mountain isn't loading sometime. (its in separate landscape layer) the map isn't that big only about 2km square. So what am I doing wrong? Can you please point out the mistake I'm making.

when I use the landmass brush, it creates a whole instead of the pyramid. any suggestions?

Above all, don't forget you should not actually make an island in 20 minutes unless it's very unimportant! The shape and form of any level you make should be well thought out to fit the gameplay. If you want a good example, look at Legend of Zelda Windwaker.

go to edit at the top left > then plugins > then search for landmass and click the checkbox to enable it. then restart or reopen the project

there are multiple methods for creating maps, this one is quick and easy. Also there are external programs you can use, however they are not free

I have seen a lot of tutorials on how to create "auto materials". Seems like you can add various layer into one material, incl. snow, water, rock, mud and so on.

2:50 when I try to drag the landmass it only moves it and when I try to hold alt to form the landmass it clones instead. I have watched to try to understand what I have been doing wrong. Did I miss something?

Click a different spline then hold alt and drag, when it’s first created you are moving the base anchor, click one of the child splines, I had the same issue

yeah if you you are trying to do this in unreal 5.2 you might as well give up already 1. they removed the texters from the market place 2. the settings are changed

2:57 Why is there no such thing as details for me?? The actors tab is on the bottom and how do I open it so I can see the details???

From the top of your screen, click Windows. It's along the top where File and Edit are etc. Click Windows, go down to Details, and click Details 1, make sure it has a check mark next to it. You can use this Windows tab to open anything you previously closed like World Outliner, Detials, etc.

Well, I have problem from beginning... When I use landmass brush on landscape, its creating pyramid, but without any points to move. Without it I can't do anything. Any props? Yes, I have "Enable Edit Layers" on.
