I watch lots of these instructional videos (usually having to wade through a teaser sneak peek and then some musical intro before they get rolling). These get right to the point, are superbly well presented with great content ,(and the occasional schmaltzy humor which seems perfectly appropriate). Well done and thanks.

This same thing happened to me two months ago, I tried to lift the bike but couldn't. I never thought to spin the bike that time. Long story short , I found two people to help to lift it then I safely got home! It's a great video Clinton !!! Thanks

Again, great advise! I find people panic when they crash and race to pick their bike up and get going again. I tell them it's not a race. Gain your composure then proceed to pick up bike. NO rush.

Keep a small length of double sided velcro wrapped around the wing mirror stem that you can use to tie the front brake on to stop the front rolling away in sand and gravel etc. if the bike is on its side.

Just dropped my Tiger 1200 yesterday while trying to ascend Genoa Peak in Lake Tahoe. Very steep rocky hill. Picking it up was not fun, even with help.

That's a great tip using the furthest point from centre to lever the bike up. I usually try the 'back to the bike and use your legs' type technique and am always concerned about flipping it over. Cheers!

Hi Clinton. I really find your videos super clear and nice learning. You are both talented as off-roader and as a teacher. Keep up the good work. Working my way to buy a DP bike and when I do, you teaching will be a great way to start. Cheers up from MX.

An alternative method (if you can keep the brake covered) is to stand it up, and as you hold the bars with both hands, wiggle the front tire back and forth (full lock to full lock) to creep the front end from pointing up the hill to more slightly down it. It's super easy on a light bike, but it can be done on a GSA or big tourer if you can keep the brakes engaged. That's not always possible depending on how you are situated, but it's easer on your bars/cases.

Every situation will be a little different, but I ride an old XR500 (read: heavy pig) and do a lot of single track and technical riding on it... There was one (impossible) hill climb in loose pea gravel I just had to try, probably close to 40* slope.. you could hardly stand on it, of course I bogged out and dumped the bike over. There's a point where you know you're going to dump it over.. This is a critical time.. dump it over so the handles are uphill! (makes all the difference) Then, since the ground I was in was so loose, I spun it until it was sitting across the path, and then picked it up, get on the bike, apply both brakes, or leave it in gear (depending on which side you've laid it down on), and just wiggle the handles back and forth until it faces downhill again. At this point you have the joy of unflooding the bike, so put it in a higher gear, Decompression, if available, and coast down the hill, when you pick up some speed, let go of the clutch and give some throttle.. Much easier than trying to kick it at the bottom of the hill!

same thing happened to me tonight. 11pm - was raining heavily and skidded and dropped the bike as i was slowing down before a turn. fortunately it was in a suburb with private houses and bungalows nearby. managed to get help from a house, a really great guy helped me pick up the bike and push it to the top of the slope. it would have been impossible to do what you did in the video, as there was little grip on the road with all the rain. i really am thankful for the guy's help, if not i would have been stuck there for hours as it was a really deserted road. overall damage - left signal light loose and gear shift lever damaged. only found out the gear shift was damaged as i rode home slowly, could not kick it up to 3rd gear. had to ride back in 2nd gear all the way with my hazard lights on. fuck wet weather riding man

wat bike were u riding? was it fully loaded? I cant lift my 1000cc motorcycle up (fully loaded with luggage on pillion seat) on wet gravel alone. There was totally no grip on my soles. It wasnt even a road actually. I had to wait for passing cars to help me lift it up.

I thought you gotta call BMW roadside assistance after the drop? 😁 Anyway, may be mention that this should be done only when you have grass underneath. If it was rocky & gnarly.. the bike would have new horrid graphics after the turn. 😂

hi Paul, i am very lucky to have BMW Canada's support. The deal is they lend me the use of the bike for my off road rider training school and I am responsible for giving it back in as mint condition as possible. They really are tough bikes and in the five years that i have used them i have only had to replace a few mirrors and two turn signals.
