Hey there, Driver. So glad you took the time to drop by to catch today's upload. What do you think is the BIGGEST thing WRONG with the trucking industry? It's YOUR chance to RANT! Love to hear from you.

There is no shortage of drivers, especially with all the foreigners driving trucks. They want more drivers to bid down the rates so freight can be shipped cheaper. If anything there are too many drivers and freight is in short supply.

I've been driving less than 2 years. No accidents or speeding tickets. I am 60 yrs old and went through a large company school basically no training. Using common sense. I can't believe how stupid the trucking industry is from no parking, and how truckers are disrespected and pay is not adequate and the free time that you aren't paid for even though your working.

I left trucking earlier this year, it just isn't worth all the BS anymore. Hazmat background checks and fingerprinting, DOT physicals, weigh stations, DMV BS, trucking company BS, etc. I found a job driving a non-cdl van with no e-logs, physicals, or hazmat required.

These scams are older than 25 years, Dave. In the 70s we had companies like NorthAmerican and Midwestern Distribution that had truck leasingprograms that ripped off new drivers. Trucking has always invited this sort of thing. If you are a company driver, you should be paid in the $25 to$30 an hour range and there should be no unpaid time. With the Gps and cameras, it is not hard to figure out if you are working or screwing off. That was the reason they paid mileage, to keep you in the seat.

40 years ago a OTR driver made as much money as a doctor or attorney, now if you add up all the hours and time spent sitting at shippers and receivers a fast food worker makes more and is better respected.

Started in 1976 and have walked away from trucking 3 times. I have always made a good living. The last 30 years as an owner operator and business owner. I have seen good times and bad times. It's my opinion that the single biggest problem with trucking is lack of regulation in the Brokerage side of things. Double and triple brokered freight is the biggest factor. The next is in-house Brokerage, where the loads and freight are passed around in the same office or building by th e parent company. The next thing is insurance, it was cost use on the average of 1185 dollars per month, per truck for insurance to operate under our own authority, plus fuel, driver pay, maintenance, tires, workman's comp, and that's not including office staff and shop expense. It's just not worth the effort for such low profit margins. Retired this year and I do not miss it one bit and I am happy, happy happy.

As far as 18y/os running interstate. I'm from Vermont. Driving between Vermont and Maine is a farsight different than running between Texas and Mississippi. One takes an hour and a half, the other,20 hours(depending on locations). One size fits all rules are hard for that reason.

Been in this industry for 30 years and all on the management side of things. I worked for a union company before, worked through the LTL strike in 94, run terminals, regions and even built a company from the ground floor up. My .02 is the industry since deregulation has been difficult. Companies would just keep discounting their rates to fight for market share. Most companies simply don’t seem to even have a good grip on their cost and yet discounting to a loss. Now with the growth of brokerage over the past 10 years, now brokers are taking their cut while passing what’s left to an asset based company which by that time their is barely if ANY profit left to be had. You can’t pay drivers more money if the margins aren’t there. It’s so easy to say “pay the drivers better.” In an industry with such extremely low margins let alone a time when diesel is outrageous-its not easy to make profit let alone provide a stable workplace for your employees. Freight is down heavily this year as well-another factor not helping.

You’re right again as usual, Dave. If some of these companies would focus on hiring quality drivers, treating them well, and paying them right instead of focusing on just putting butts in seats, their revenues would be higher and their accidents and claims would be lower. Just basic common sense but like a lot of basic common sense issues these days, they are frequently ignored.

Keep the mirrors AND add cameras. I tool the mirror dashcam out of my hotshot truck (clips over the rearview mirror) and now it's hanging on the middle sun shade on my Peterbilt. Camera is mounted on top of the rear of the cab and it's recording front and rear at 2K resolution. Looking up at it is a natural thing since we all started out driving 4 wheelers. Bonus is that I can see my 5th wheel in it. My stereo has a camera too, and I'll eventually put that camera on the rear of my trailer.

Shit Roadmaster charged me 9800 for their school. Werner was gonna pay me 200 a month to put towards tuition, but it was also taxed so it was really 180 for a 200$ payment. I eventually quit Werner and said fuck it I’m not paying 10k for trucking school. Roadmaster said they’d settle for 1800$. 😐 So much of trucking is a joke. It’s robbing Peter to pay Paul. It’s cutthroat. It’s finding new ways to scam guys who just want to make a good buck. Hell I feel like the prices at truck stops are more to rip off truck drivers rather than 4 wheelers. I love the freedom of the road, but the micromanaging, the long hours waiting to be loaded or unloaded, paying 25-50 to park in major cities and showering every other day and dealing with the health conditions that come with sitting 8-12 hours or so a day is exhausting.

As a former driver of CRST, I can vouch for how lousy they treat their drivers. Not only was I forced to have a sleep study when I wasn't diagnosed, but they also had my driver license suspended Until I can prove that I had Taking a sleep study for something I hadn't been diagnosed for, And while jumping all the hoops to get my driver license back, they fire me. So yeah, I can vouch for how lousy CRST treats their drivers.

If they are going to force speed limiters I think they should go with a system like "ESmart" that tracks the truck with GPS and will only let you go 5mph over the speed limit on the road. I had it on a truck before, and it worked fairly well. Sometimes, there were issues like new roads or areas on the interstate that had been under construction with a lower speed but no longer were. For those areas, we had a button we could hit to lock in our location and call it in later. They would get the speed updated in 24 hours for that area. With that system you can run the speed limit and still have the extra 5mph if needed to pass

If you dont tackle 1 problem at a time and see it through before jumping to another nothing gets done. Hardly any courtesy between drivers anymore , the modern day technology , no need to find a booth with a phone , call in and hear call me back in 30 min. then actually have a conversation with another truckdriver to remind you that they are human too. But if you could do 1 thing that really needs to be passed on to drivers is bathroom cleanliness , pee in urinals not toilets if you dont need to poop , clean up after yourselves, make things better than you found it , put trash in cans , don't litter, ever , anywhere. Tip truckstop workers that clean showers and bathrooms and pick up trash at the fuel island and parking lot ,tell them you appreciate the job they do , be helpful to other drivers instead of filming on your phone , understand if you pull into a truckstop your going to be delayed so deal with it , don't lay on your horn or use Jake's it wakes everyone up , these are things that everyone should know but obviously not
