Shed a few tears today hearing that the singer passed, didn’t know how dear to my heart they were. Later on I got caught up in the jokes and memes about Smash mouth, but they’re no joke. First, R.I.P. to Steve Harwell. This song always will always will have special place in my heart. I was really huge jazzbo; stuff like Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, etc... Then I heard this song in the summer of '97. All my friends hated it, but I loved the vibe and the ambience of the spring reverb guitars and warmth the vocals and drums. This track feels like a beautifully hot summer day with an unmatched brilliance to it. Novel yet very classy. I also owe this band a massive thank you for getting me into experimental lounge music specifically the group Tipsy! - a Bay Area duo that was also incredibly amazing for its time. I always wish they would have collaborated together and made some weird experimental lounge madness together. Stay Fresh!

But by 1999 this sound had already been in the forefront of the mainstream with other artists performing similar music. After the likes of Sugar Ray, Sublime and other reggae/ska influenced groups started putting out hit after hit, it was so familiar. So Smash Mouth did NOT sell out. Playing this at my 26 year old son's engagement party! Was his absolute FAV when he was about 9! He and I used to dance to it in the living room. Sigh ... not long afterwards came the years of "Mom, you embarrass me!" ... probably will if I pull him up on the dance floor with me at the party! BUT .... I FULLY INTEND TO DO IT!!!

1997 was my freshman year in college studying Psychology. I had spent almost six years listening Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Black Metal and then this song came out on the radio as I was on the autobus going to classes, suddenly I was swinging and dancing that sunny and warm morning and and that same afternoon a cousin tolde me his father had bought him this CD and this song became part of the remix tape for going camping with my friends. Today, 25 years later I woke up singing and I have listened this same tune eight times. There is no such a time machine like the memories and this music is the fuel moves its engine.
