This trap is pretty great but I don't think it needs the Abjuration/anti-magic at all. Even if the PCs take the (considerable amount of) time to move all of the barrels out of the perceived trap path, that justifies some encounter rolls so the group will still take an HP tax/loss, just from a different source. If the players figure out a trap it's okay for them to come up with valid solutions to avoid said trap, which also makes them feel clever.

You know, this is a really great point. I agree with you on this, 100%. Cheers, my friend!

I don't like the idea of anything simply as 'Invulnerable' And anti-magic fields should be something incredibly rare or costly. I think you're right it doesn't diminish the trap by taking these away, heck messing with the barrels could also be another trigger. And as you said if the party can think of clever ways to negate the trap good for them.

Thank you, my friend. I'm really excited about this book! Not only for the updated traps and being a huge fan of Grimtooth, but also... let's just say, for another reason. 😉 Stay tuned!

Thanks for this. I ran it for my game last night and it went down a treat. Swapped out acid in the barrels with oil and had some cheeky goblins at the end of the corridor trying to spark up some burning arrows. The fear in the player's eyes was great fun!

Oh, heck yes. I love the idea of adding the oil and goblins. That does sound like great fun. Well done!

Hey Wally, it's cool but to much ultimate magic. I know player's are just to smart 🤓. Make the barrels old clay pots full of liquid. If they try to move them they automatically break releasing jellys & oozes. I would put the huge clay pots out of way completely. And have the hallway only at a slight incline, the great bronze rolling pin can drop out of the ceiling or wall above the the real door, no fake wall. The fall of the great bronze rolling pin breaks opens all the old clay pots releasing everything. Have the doors magically seal and let them try to get out or dispell it, the rolling pin ends at the door nobody going anywhere anyways. Do the watery broken hallway, the one when the party gets halfway down the wet and dilapidated hallway, (giant octopus) tentacles start coming through the holes in the walls to get the party. You know more water starts rushing in, falling bricks from the ceiling, the holes in the wall get a little bigger, if someone looks in all they see is a giant eye staring back at them. Thanks Wally you have a wonderful day!

Some really, really good ideas here Matt, well done! I dig the clay pot idea and absolutely love the imagery of the "great bronze rolling pin". That is awesome. Well done. Cheers!

I remember reading about this trap when Grimtooth's traps too came out. So devious and deadly, especially if your a lower level character. Even higher level characters will be battered and bruised going into the next room, they would be a bit reluctant on what may await them. I think the most deadly part of the trap is the acid. If you were lucky enough to avoid most of the steamrolling of the wheel, taking half damage you are going to be surrounded by all those barrels. Your best bet is to lay low and hope you can avoid the smaller wheel by a good dexterity check. I am enjoying your nice set up for these Grimtooth traps, great visuals, and I know that has to take some serious time to create, and edit. Keep up the great work Wally. Look forward to the next.

I think your right. Given the situation, I'd much rather be laying low avoiding wheel #2 than getting soaked in acid, lol. Thank you for the wonderful comment, glad you are digging the setups for these trap videos... and yep, I have hours if not days invested into each video, lol. But... I enjoy making them. :-) Cheers and have a great day!

Hey, I have a pretty good idea for a "trap" I think! It involves a riddle and coupling the correct facial expressions in the shapes of masks to it. It'd be pretty cool if you use it or make it better or something. So: My party has to get through a druid's defences (it's mostly one big illusion). The druid is however in very bad condition, which has made his traps towards his home a bit.... horrific and disfunctional. They have to cross a chasm of some kind that has some wooden steps dangling on vines from branches of a very large tree above (70 ft high), which is looking particularly dangerous as the wood is rotten, and the steps are 15 ft apart. First off, there's a tree in front of the bridge covered in human faces and human body parts, most of whose faces are asleep in front of the bridge. One of those whispers an easy riddle, though it fails to do so completely or properly (I used "through invisible force, I point without fingers" which suggests a compass, which is an item my players had to guide them to this druid's hide-out). Since there was an NPC traveling with them who knew the answer to it and should have been able to bypass the entire defence system by telling it, the riddle wasn't really the main point. This NPC however knew that this tree creature should've just been an awakened tree called Beeker, and knew something was afoot. I made clear to the players that he has his doubts on whether giving the answer would work or not. If they use the answer, Beeker attacks. If they tried to get past them without saying anything, Beeker would too (awakened tree stats give a good start, I also gave him some uses of "phatasmal force" to add some mind-alterations, and I gave him some minions crawling out of the chasm). I didn't really give them the option of getting out of this fight. You may decide differently. Once he's defeated, is when the actual puzzle starts: Beeker's face reappears on the nearest pair of wooden steps, stating the following (he speaks in staggered, mumbling voice): "I... have 4 faces. The first I smile, the second I... curse, then I (reduced to incomprehensible muttering)... until I sleep." Characters with high passive perception (DC 15 or above) will then notice that wooden faces have appeared in the tree branches above them with several facial expressions: happy, frightened, crying, closed eyes, neutral, wrathful, a disgusted face, surprised face, one that’s in pain, and one that seems paralyzed (have half its face drooping or such). Not all faces are shown at once, , only 4 at a time (unless you want to), and they are 60-70 ft high above them. So, here's what the players will need to do: they first need to hit the happy face (with some kind of ranged attack, DC is 12-15), upon which another vine falls out the tree between the start and the first step ( a 7 ft jump should be managable for pretty much all players). As this first step falls down, more faces show up, and so it will continue. Second, they'll have to hit the wrathful face, third, the crying face, finally, the one with its eyes closed. The logic behind it, is that this person is happy first, gets angry about something, after which they cry themselves to sleep. If they hit the wrong face or miss the DC, the vine falls down in the chasm, lost for good (flavour it as the faces getting upset shaking the tree, or by them accidently hitting the vine with the extra step). If they do miss steps, a 15 ft jump can still be solved in other ways. If they fall in the chasm, I have arranged it as such that they fall unconscious (but stable); they'll effectively have taken psychic damage to reduce them to 0 HP, and stable. Since it's an illusion, they'll wake up in the druid's home effectively captured (probably bound with vines to a tree, tightly). The other players will however not find out about this until later. Or have it actually be deadly, this is up to you XD With those continuing past the tight robe, I will then have them face one of your complex puzzles you created, after which they'll finally reach the druid. I hope you like the puzzle!

I do have to say that the faces in the tree and in the branches is a really cool idea. I love the visualization of it. I must have missed one of the clues, I was able to guess happy and angry from your clues, but the only other one I seen was ... until I sleep, which, I thought might be "closed eyes". As in, closed my eyes to sleep. Seems like a fun adn interesting puzzle. Have you run this puzzle yet? If so, how did your players do?
@eline8087
@eline8087 9 ай бұрын
@@WallyDM Thanks for taking interest! I did run it, it was pretty cool, since my players managed to improve it on the spot. They somehow came to the conclusion that they had to show the correct emotion to the faces and have it be genuine (because shooting/violence couldn't possibly be the answer, haha); made for some very nice RP moments with some set up fights between PC's (all in good dramatic fun), frightening a child traveling with them (and making them panic and cry XD good times), and casting sleep on someone. They came to the "I cry until I sleep" rather fast, but then were stumped by the fact that the crying face and sleeping face was not there. It adds difficulty to the puzzle that may end up being too confusing, so that's a choice to be made.

I’ve run this trap a few times and always had the second wheel right behind the first. I definitely think using initiative is a good improvement and having the wheels spaced out as well. Question about initiative traps though, how do you maintain the sense of urgency? I feel like when I give players initiative someone spends minutes looking at the trap after it’s triggered to figure out their turn.
@WallyDM
@WallyDM 10 ай бұрын
Really cool that you have run this trap before. Ah, yes, sense of urgency in a complex trap with initiative. To be fair, I think this can happen with most combat. I think the important thing is to ask your players to be ready on their turn... but, we know how that goes... spending minutes to figure out what happens. So, I would get a 30 second sand timer and flip that over when its their turn. I do this from time to time to apply a bit of real-time pressure. Give it a try and lemme know how it goes. Cheers!

This puzzle looks fun to run, getting everyone roll initiative and trying their best to avoid it. Yours a bit complicated maybe remove the whole magic thing and let the players figure a way to avoid it. Reward them if they somehow managed to stop the giant rolling wheel, maybe a combined strength of 30 athletic check
