I played this game all the time as a kid, was nigh on unbeatable with Mike! Today I took my class to the Powerup exhibit at the Science Museum and they had this game. I got the ace with Mike you described on my first shot. It was so satisfying getting that muscle memory back.

Mike has always been my go-to character too! I still play this every year when Wimbledon’s on. It’s a comfort game and one of my all-time faves. No other tennis game has come close to this in my very humble opinion

for some reason, my gf and i are obsessed wquth this one. we play vs the AI and try to beat specific couples. We hate particular characters and we are really close to getting our first win in a 2v2, 3 set match. Strill don´t understand a couple of things of how hitting works. Mostly using B to return the ball consistently and sometimes A with varying results.

Great to hear someone else enjoying Smash Tennis! It plays a little differently to most tennis games of the era. You need to use the d-pad/stick to direct your shots while you press the A/B/X buttons. The A button is your faster top-slice, B is a slower higher shot (better when you’re close to the net), and X is a lob shot but it’s pretty useless to be honest. The A button also triggers a Smash shot if you return a high ball. It takes a little while to get used to moving the character about AND directing the shots though. Mike is the best character in the game, and has an almost guaranteed ace serve if you serve from the furthest point away from the opposition, hold the d-pad left (if serving from the right side of the court) and hit the ball just after the apex with the A button. Good luck!

@@Gametropolisto be honest I mastered Smash Tennis, but now I'm playing Super Family Tennis (jp version of Smash) and it is much harder, I can't win even one set with Mike.... Did you try it? Any advices?

I’ve not tried it to be honest. Quite intrigued to give it a go now. Lots of games were made easier for the US and UK markets back then.
