When Metrolink started in the early 1990s, one of our neighbours was a GMP officer. He remarked that, when an RTA occurred, it was always easy to work out where the tram had been going....
@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH3 сағат бұрын
This is NOT an RTC but a RAILWAY collision as anything that runs on rails including trams comes under the RAIB & has the SAME status as when a road vehicle is hit by a train on a level crossing.

Usually the trams and buses are going so slow in this area, thjey have plenty of time to avoid an accident, I hope nobody was seriously injured. Both vehicles should be repairable,, but given the age of the bus (11 years old), it's destined for the scrapheap as doing so won't be economically viable.

This could not have been 2:13 pm. I'm pretty sure it should be 2:33 pm. At 2:13 pm, the bus was between the Dagenham Road (Rusholme) and St Mary's (Manchester Royal Infirmary), where it continued on route, as normal until it reached Piccadilly Gardens at 2:33 pm (5 minutes late as it should have arrived at 2:28 pm), ready to start it's return journey at 2:34 pm, back to Parrs Wood (East Didsbury), scheduled to arrive at 3:17 pm.

I've never understood why the trams arn't in tunnel in the city centre as happens in a lot of european cities. Then they wouldn't have to trundle about at 15mph and risk these sorts of collisions.

@neilrobertson811 Well, historical note: that was the original idea, in the 1970s, for the Picc-Vic rail tunnel. Never built, so we got Metrolink in the very early 1990s. Of interest, when the Irish remodelled Manchester city centre in June 1996, you could see the unfinished platforms for the unbuilt Arndale Centre station in the crater. It is still down there, but don't expect it to ever see a train.

The damage would mainly be from the coupler of the tram. That would have been roughly at dashboard height.

It doesn't help when they seem to be making ENVIRO buses out of either Paper Mache or Wet leaves these days. As a former coach/bus driver, I know there's very little impact structure at the front to protect the driver, but COME ON, at least try a little. Fact remains, drivers are quicker to replace than the bus, and cheaper. Best wishes to the driver in making a full recovery. I bet Stagecoach was going to say the same, but couldn't help.... yada yada BUT HOW'S THE BUS!?!?
