The opening scene of people crammed into a record shop, including people outside with virtually no audio was a snapshot of the magic of the early 90's. Only with hindsight can I look back and realize what a special time this is.

The Record Shop in question was called Atomic Records and was located on the Fashionable East Side of Milwaukee a couple miles South of the UWM Campus. I know because I used to shop there occasionally but somehow managed to completely miss this in store Appearance of the early Smashing Pumpkins! Damn it! I didn’t know about it. And I didn’t know about the second appearance by the Pumpkins at the Milwaukee Rock Club called The Unicorn in 1992 run by a guy named Gus either. Of course not! A year earlier in 1991, Nirvana played the Unicorn! Of course, I missed that show as well. Sadly, I doubt there’s any audio or visual recordings of that show. They were completely unknown then. Well, a handful of people got to see Nirvana up close in a small club and then the Pumpkins the next year also up close in the same club. Lucky 🍀 people! Only a year later did both bands explode world 🌎 wide and I realized they both played shows in my town and I didn’t see them in time. Then in 1993 Nirvana played the Mecca Arena downtown Milwaukee and tickets were only $20. I didn’t go for reasons I won’t get into to my Eternal Regret. I have a recording of the show and it was Amazing! Of course, I thought I’ll catch them next time only to find out later there was no next time. That shocked me and I vowed to not let it happen again so I did finally see the Pumpkins on their 94 Siamese Dream Tour! It was amazing and loud! They must of played at over 120 decibels for sure cause I had to put Some folded papers in my ears plus I could feel the drums on my chest. A lot of girls were singing along to the songs and there was a haze and smell of a certain Herb in the crowd. I know that smell anywhere! I probably got a contact high from the odor. So the crowd was buzzed. The sound waves were pouring over us! Great and Powerful show! There was no encore cause Billy came out and said Jimmy had Sprained his shoulder so he couldn’t do an encore so that was it. It was still a great show but I don’t think anyone taped the Audio or Visual. Too bad cause I wish I had a recording of it. I searched and can’t find it anywhere. Also, I was really not pleased when I found out that Nirvana had recorded early Demos of Nevermind at Smart Studios in 1990 in Madison and the Pumpkins also played some early shows there as well in 1990-91. Here they were the Two Greatest Bands of the Nineties playing gigs and recording only 90 miles west of my location and because they were unknown at the time I had no idea and didn’t know about this until later. I wish time travel were possible as Id know what to do! I’d go back and see every live early show of both bands and then try to get their autographs on their early records! Then buy them some beers and hangout with them and talk to them and try to get to know them a little! And that’s it. I would not harass them or bother them or annoy them by overstaying my welcome. But it would’ve been a cool experience meeting them all! I was So close and yet so Far! Life is Not Fair sometimes! And then knowing what I know now, I would like to go back to Seattle in April 1994 and taken away Kurt’s Shotgun. I’d say to him you can’t have this! No Way are you getting this back! Over my Dead Body! I would have taken it and hid it from him and tried to stop or prevent him from doing what he eventually did. Not in front of me and on my watch! No way, No how! So he’d be alive today and have celebrated his 50 birthday instead of being Dead and Gone. I’d buy him a Birthday Cake and let him blow out the 50 candles! And he’d be looking back at an incredible career and be happy, healthy and retired! And Not Dead! I know I have a good imagination but in my alternate reality and timeline that’s what would’ve happened and not this reality. It would be a good outcome!

Exactly what I was thinking! It's strange to think how the entire music distribution system of that time, which seemed a given, was actually such a fragile thing. The internet at first seemed a boon for indy artists, and it has been great for some folks, but it also killed the bricks and mortar network of record stores, indy labels, DIY venues, and even the major labels stopped supporting small acts. Back when good music couldn't be downloaded, you sought it out, and you showed up to listen and show the artists your appreciation.

Wow! This brings back memories. I was at the Starplex in Dallas for this show and rendition of Hello Kitty Kat. This was the 2nd of 2 days of Lollapalooza.. They played B-Side Pisces Iscariot stuff on the 2nd stage while the Beastie Boys were on the main stage. I lucked into seeing them because I had to run out to the bathroom and heard them in the distance. Ran over and there they were playing for a small crowd. Blew me away. They also jammed with Shudder to Think the day before and James used my pen to sign autographs afterwards. He walked off with my pen. JAMES IHA STOLE MY PEN. True story.

This is great early Pumpkins! The first show is from an in store appearance at the now defunct Atomic Records on Milwaukee’s fashionable East Side! That was a great Independent Record and CD 💿 store! If you liked a band you could find everything you wanted from that band and they would even special order stuff from England or anywhere, if you wanted more. All the rarities and bootlegs, and the US and UK official release of any band all together in one location! God, that was a great store if you were a hardcore fan of anyone. They even had cassette tape bootlegs and VHS Tapes. Then the small stage was from the legendary Unicorn! A very small club in Milwaukee that would feature unknown live bands. Nirvana played there the year before in 1990. Of course, I missed all these great shows! Can you imagine seeing Nirvana and SP up close in a small club? Holy plethora of Riches! Of course, no one knew they were going to be huge the very next year!

There’s a KZbin video about it and he looked at the paint job which he did and knew immediately that it’s the Gish guitar 🎸. The entire Gish album was recorded with that one guitar 🎸. @@beanvillen24 But, really, just think about all the crap music back then. I agree that there was amazing music then. That's my generation. Unbelievable music, and tons of it, all the time. Yet, despite that, there was still tons of shit, and unfortunately, most people liked listening to shit regardless of the good stuff available. There is also great music now, but we're too old and lazy to look for it. We rest contented in what we had back then. There is great music, but the internet changed everything, so now there are millions of people putting out music. It's very hard to sift through the hay stack for the jewels of good music.

@@alukuhito I get it and yes there is good music and yes you have to find it, I guess I was referring the time when radio played good music and mtv had it’s different rock shows and you could go to sam goody and touch and read the liner notes, like you were part of a scene, had the posters and t-shirts and wrote your favorite bands on your book bag and book covers, idk i feel like we have lost the personality or the intimacy with music and musicians!

Listening to them play the Joker makes me wonder why Weezer never covered that. They would be perfect for it. SP does a fun version here though

3:11 Oh god the pumpkin. I saw them play the SoundFX/Bacchanal in San Diego in Dec. '91. A waitress carried a pumpkin above her head and through the crowd to the front of the stage, Billy chuffed, " A pumpkin? Can you be any more fucking obvious?" Can't blame him. What did they expect, that they'd smash it?

Billy had bad hair back then. Never again would fans get to see them this close again. After this, they released Siamese Dream and started playing to huge crowds. The clubs were left behind.
