This is such a good idea for a topic. I've been personally really trying to incorporate throwing out scary hitboxes that I know wont hit just so I can try and condition my opponent or even put some fear into them. If my opponent is near the ledge at 120%, I'll throw out a down smash as Banjo which is quite quick, and so many times they will see that and then try to work their way out of the corner through a jump, giving me a free punish by meeting them in the air with a wonderwing or forward air or whatever I want.

Kola also deserves to be in the conversation for top players that mash with option selects on deck for everything. You especially see it in his ledge trapping with jab at ledge. The average player would not be able to mash jab at ledge and have the same level of ledge trapping he has. He’s constantly placing hit boxes in areas he thinks his opponent could be in, and in every scenario he’s basically thinking “if they do A then I do this, if they do B then I do this”, with a super fast refresh rate. Light does this too but on a character who’s more efficient at it with a higher reward.

Love the Rodney Mullen reference. Lol he was my fav in THPS2, but then also really liked his interview segments in the Until the Wheels Fall Off documentary. The dude literally invented the ollie off the ground, but to Ramses’s point, only after someone had done an ollie in a bowl

Probably one of my favorite episodes from the Smash podcast community. I feel like I have a different perspective of the game after this episode and hope to change my strategies to keep up with the meta.

I really enjoyed the discussions about the intentions and methods of Sakurai and his team behind balancing and designing ult. I think peeking behind the scenes and trying to disect why a character is the way they are or why a game mechanic is that way is very fascinating, I wish so much that Sakurai went into deep detail about this stuff with his youtube channel.

I really appreciate this episode. It helped me understand my own playstyle, and why I do what I do. I'm 30 and ult is basically my first smash game. I haven't gone to a local, and don't really have people to discuss this stuff with. So my understanding of the game comes from streamers, commentators, videos, and (finally) podcasts. Seeing how deep ult can be, and how much more can be left sucks. We lost a lot of progression because of covid. And we may never get to fully explore it due to a new console and new game.. I wouldn't hate the idea of Ult Deluxe at this point, with a good amount of balance changes, character reworks, and stage swaps. Maybe even a worthy successor to subspace if they actually saved development time/costs making it a deluxe.

really interesting approach in explaining the difference between ult and older games, many of us who came from smash 4 don't abuse hitboxes as we should and in particular i can relate to dash shielding in neutral and putting myself in horrible situations bc people undershoot more often and the option is so strong 😂

Some extracts and comments: “A reason button mashing is looked down upon is the evolution of Smash. Melee is so great because it allows all 3 play styles: aggressive, spacing, and defensive. In contrast Brawl and Sm4sh were much more defense based, and because that skillset was prioritized in those entries, it was thought of as the proper way to play; this leads to complaints of mashing and criticizing Ultimate because it’s much more initiative/punish based.” Totally agree. In general I think Melee’s whiffs are worse than Ultimate’s despite how punishing Ultimate is, because frame data tends to give Melee attacks longer recoveries and doesn’t let Melee characters be actionable as fast as Ultimate’s, which balances out aggressiveness as more high-risk high-reward. Also Melee has a ton more options for defensive play, on the technical end stuff like crouch cancelling, but more importantly platforms. I don’t see very much Ultimate platform play at all compared to Melee because there’s just wayyy less options like shield dropping, wave landing, etc. “Even with Ultimate’s 7ish frame delay and much greater hitlag, it’s still very hard to react when getting hit the first time and plan things out, which leads it to being less reactive and more strategic. This is similar to how Brawl’s players often queue up moves like an MMO by extensively using the buffer system, but because Ultimate is way more aggressive button mashing can fill that hole by controlling space.” “Platform fighters tend to care less about the ‘numbers’ frame data than traditional fighters. For example, if I do an option with -2, enough for you to punish me with a jab, it doesn’t matter if you’re too far away. Thus the range of frame data and how long it lasts (if you can control movement while doing it) is much more important.” “If you want to play well, try to Min-Max (maximize how good the worst outcomes are). If you want to do a consistent good option in past games, you use shield a lot, but since shields are nerfed a ton in Ultimate, spamming safe hitboxes is an easy way to control the game.”

It's so interesting bringing the communal brain to mashing. I always just thought mashing was a nooby exploit, but I guess it's common and effective enough that eventually we have to put it under the microscope.

Also last comment - to answer the question, Young Link is 100 percent the biggest masher lmao. 0 end lag on ANYTHING he does, and his projectiles are super mashable too.

Sorry about that! With Genesis and everything I myself was also busy and I didn’t really have the time to put the timestamps, especially for an hour long coaches corner it can be very tiring to put the timestamps in. I’ll be sure to add timestamps to the episodes that do not have them and this one tomorrow, and hope you enjoyed the episode!

Its such an interesting conversation because weirdly enough i barely mash (Steve player) i play a smash 4 esque neutral and mostly undershoot minecart. And it WORKS. I dash up shield and then react.

Thank you sou much for talking about this!!!! I hate how ultimate is very mashy and shields are weaker this highlights why ultimate is just not fun for me but hearing how neutral works now might help me pick the game back up. Smash 4 and Ultimate are very different games mashing is very strong due to shields being weaker and landing lag being reduced so it is hard to whiff punish and punish with shields I was a die hard smash 4 fan and I played very reactionary so going into ultimate was not very easy for me. Again thank you sou much for covering this topic ^w^

I always thought a simple solution to someone mashing shorthop aerials or any move is to implement the mechanic they have for spamming rolls/spotdodges. Just make it slower and laggier over time to discourage it. Only reset it if it hits shield or actually lands on target. Just seems obvious to me 🤷‍♂️
