I believe without patches or a new game in 2 years we'll realize that this is the moment in time when we as a whole started to accept that Sephiroth is bad in smash. He's so good and iconic in canon that it's hard to process sometimes but his solo Main results are about on the level of Lucas or someone like that. He's so locked down by his design that he has almost no potential for moving up where as some characters that were historically considered worse than Sephiroth have shown their potential or are just starting to show it now. Revisit this comment in 2025-26 and see if Charles's tier list is still scuffed.

@blurry.magnets Ironically I've often compared Sephiroth and Mewtwo. Both in Theory should be among the best but have major design flaws that hold them back. Mewtwo even without his tail problem is held back largely by the fact that he gets so much out of tussling but he's too light, large, and generally hittable for this to work out well. So you are reduced to playing a sort of zoner-ish style and waiting for your best chance. Sephiroth is also largely held back by his weight. You said Mewtwo has far more potential and I agree. Ultimately because Sephiroth's base design is terrible. Ganon has better frame data overall than Sephiroth. Still, Seph could make use of his design and wing more often if he was at least as heavy as Samus but being really light weight, slow, tall, and having terrible Out of Shield options simply locks him in at being exactly as good as he is now with only the potential to go down....which he is.

I don't really understand how having a bad recovery is too shallow or simple of a criticism. It seems like a trait that is almost agreed upon to make a character objectively more volatile in a tournament. I understand that it shouldnt be the only thing people point to, but it most certainly should be an important aspect, because it will come up in a match and especially in particular matchups. Like saying "Incineroar could be higher but he's too slow on the ground" is a petty shallow thing to point to, but it is important as its objectively a major downside that will be taken advantage of in many matchups.

Nair despite being broken is very inconsistent in that you need a very specific hitbox to do confirms so if a character is all over you and you do rising nair and get the wrong hitbox, you won't be able to confirm after fast falling the nair 2, you can see plent of players airdodge after kameme nair 2s them if he didn't get the right hitbox in rising nair 1. Nair 1 also has the issue of sending opponent's behind you if you catch them jumping, which makes the rest of the move whiff and you eat a punish for it. Sora's rekkas on shield have brief periods where he can't act, therefor not making it a mixup if you know how the move functions. Idj nair and Idj fair loops also require very specific spacing although they are more consistent than rising nair confirms since they count as full hop moves and have more damage and by proxy more hitstun. His spells are probably the most underrated part of his kit, sonic blade even with the homing input will sometimes whiff on the 3rd hit and just like with anti-air nair 1 sending opponents behind you, YOU get punished for hitting your opponent. Part of it is players needing to get more conistent with his advanced confirms, but another part of it is stuff like nair, thundaga, and sonic blade not working correctly a decent amount of time. Doesn't help that therr was only one balamce patch after his release, so he is stuck with broken moves. I guess ZSS players have had to deal with it since launch though lmao. The thing is everyone glorifying Sora doesn't even play him enough or at all to see his issues, and that is why he gets so overrated. Other characters rated way lower than Sora have had similar placings in prominent top 8s and are like 20 spots lower, and it isn't to say they don't belong there, but Sora is more of a top 30 character that just has a great pilot. Skyjay does the same with Incin. Also I usually agree it Pink's takes, but Sora has awful MUs against G&W, ZSS, and even Sephiroth (LMAO). Also I can't imagine on paper that he does well against Bayo with how bats works and how light he is and how much of a pain she is to edge guard. He's probably right outside of top tier, but people calling him mid are trolling.

With so many factors where Marcus brought up that Tweek designed his tier list from the perspective of winning a match versus Marcus, Charles, and Haz designing the tier list from the perspective of winning the tournament, honestly, to whoever made that site to generate tier lists; this tier list structure has GOT TO GO. To be clear, that message isn't to our hosts, you guys are fine. It's to whoever is making a platform for generating tier lists. Our hosts are bringing up so many factors that but this information isn't immediately recognizable from doing rows with each character. I'm also reminded of Muteace's controversial tier list but the theme was "who has the easiest time taking stocks" and put Incineroar over Palutena and made a big stink (but it convinced me tbqh) as he constantly reiterated that the tier list wasn't a typical one on ordering who the best characters are. To whoever decides to get the jump on everyone else in doing a new tier list for the likely next generation Smash Bros, please go the extra mile and give us the option of a 4D tier list. Yeah, you heard me. FOUR (4) dimensions. X,Y,Z and temperature/color. Character strength and flexibility, execution demands, tournament viability, Effort in taking stocks, counterpick/pocket/antimeta value. Heck on top of the color, you can add another dimension of contrast to specify how much is theoretical versus how much demonstrated in a tournament setting. You know what, this might be a neat project to work on actually.

Characters moving up really depends on their ability to take on the top tiers. Dealing with blocks AND speed is essential. I’m not sure how much Yoshi can be pushed beyond what he has already done. It would be interested to see if Marcus’ predictions are Marth come to fruition and if Min Min goes up in the meta as her kit is optimized.

I've always quietly hoped Tweek would pick up R.O.B. - a lot of hidden movement and tech, sick item combos, super strong setplay at the ledge, off-stage game, and none of the ROB players have gotten close to reaching his potential (Anathema found broken-ass tech after having training mod for like a day, cmon guys). He's big but he can play to not get hit pretty well, and he even has the better version of Diddy d-tilt. He'd make the character look sick

Marth is good against Kazuya, Aegis, Steve, Game & Watch, and he can even contest ROB and Sonic (but not beat them obviously). Like y'all act like Marth is so bad he can't do anything. Ignaize and Kreeg are both at the top in their home states, with several wins on some of the top 100 players, and they use Marth. Let's not forget one of the best players in the top 100, Riseazu, also plays Marth and has won or made top 8 in regionals with him. Then you have Mr. E who said he is considering playing Marth over Lucina these days (saw this on his stream). Like say what you want about Marth not being better than Lucina, but we gotta quit pretending like he is unviable when he has results. Lucina isn't even getting results rn.

35:00 I agree with Pink's take on Marth. On average, he doesn't kill as late as people believe. If I don't kill at an early percent (say 75% and below) I normally kill at 120%. That's the same as when I play Lucina, except she can't kill early at all. In this meta, I notice how valuable it is to "cheat." I was losing hard to a Pac-Man but then I turned it up and landed some wicked early stocks. This is why I don't believe he is mid at high level. At mid level and below, of course he sucks: players cannot consistently space. However, you get to high level and now you're consistently getting kills before 120% (and again, sometimes WAY below 120%). It isn't just tippers that allow Marth to kill either. His sour Smash attacks can be used at the higher percents (and even combo' into), tech chasing is very strong and consistent on Marth, and of course edge-guarding and ledge-trapping is top notch. This character is not a mid tier unless you suck. If he was so bad, Ignaize and Kreeg would not be near (or at) the top of PR in their states, getting upsets on top 100 players, and making good runs at huge majors (of course nobody wants to talk about that though, because it goes against the "Marth sucks" narrative. They'll talk about Mac in top 64 though, smh). Not sure about Marth being better than Roy though lol. Roy is cracked.

​​@@Junr777 that's not true, necessarily. While her base damage output is stronger per hit, she has way less combos and confirms. Marth is more combo-oriented. He can true combo to rack up more damage than Lucina can with her true combos, whether that be through longer sour spot strings, sour to tipper strings, or complete tipper strings. Lucina's base damage is not THAT much better to a point where she outclasses Marth entirely (I play both and even top players in my state say I am one of the best Marcinas here). He does have confirms that are rather consistent and work on everyone. Nair 1 into F-Smash is a common one, then of course Dair into imagination. Up air starts a lot of confirms, and tech chase confirms are a huge thing with Marth. Like what Pink said, a good Lucina main cannot play Marth and expect to be good because he is that much different. The problem people have is that they see a similar moveset and try to play Marth and Lucina the same way, but that can't work. I've tried. Lucina cannot be played like Marth yet expect to take games, and vice versa. Also MKLeo just isn't that good with Marth edge-guarding, honestly. He was more of a neutral God than being offstage. You see that with every character he plays (besides Joker because... Gun). Marth's edge-guarding puts players in a huge disadvantage offstage, whether he lands a tipper or a sour. He is still in advantage, he can still drop down and swing again, he can still burn your resources constantly with broken frame data, and he can still land a tipper. Just because Leo doesn't do it doesn't mean nobody can. Sometimes Protobanham doesn't even get the edge-guards and he is the best Lucina lol. Also Marth straight up doesn't need high damage output when he has consistent kill confirms at 45%, and yet he can still rack up great damage. I have taken multiple players from 0 to 80 (or dead) in a few seconds.

People have been trying to play marth like marth and it just has not worked and they switch to lucina, not the other way around. And Marth mains always have a pocket lucina, not the other way around. Because when the going gets tough even those who love Marth love the consistency whether they want to admit it or not. Maybe Marth is as good as lucina but there is no way he is leagues above her.
