Thanks for the wonderful coverage of one of my favorite comedy/sci-fi series. I also enjoy your The Terror and Franklin Expedition video essays. Entertaining and insightful plus heavily laced with sarcasm is just the icing on the cake.

Lister suggestively bonking the dispensing machine has to be possibly the worst joke in the shows entire run. i ain't sure how the writer ever thought it would work. its not shot well enough that it pays off like the scene in polymorph and telling Craig Charles to pretend he is humping a box only works if you are laughing at Craig Charles trying incredibly hard to make it look convincing... which it doesn't and i ain't sure it ever could.

Yeah. So many big flaws this series Could it have worked if Listers belt got somehow trapped in the vending dispenser?

I liked series X, probably because they set the bar low and managed to exceed it. I felt series XI wasn't as good probably because I was expecting better? Promised Land was a bit of a mess.
@spencerreynolds06174 жыл бұрын
Promised Land was on the lines of series 8, all silly and pantomimy in the sense that this ‘diamond light’ concept turns a hologram into the look of a bloody superhero - which is just stupid. Overall, Red Dwarf has lost its charm since 6, it’s not clever any more like it used to, not as funny or intelligent jokes. It just feels like a generic sitcom that has gone of the rails with sci fi elements thrown in. Rob Grant is not here anymore and that’s the reason. He was the clever one and Doug was clearly the latter.

People don't understand how much more money it costs for a sitcom or any show to have a studio audience. It's not simply trying to get 250 people to fill a studio at Shepperton Studios, first the cost of hiring an audience ticketing platform is costly, and then comes the insurance. Insurance to cover the 250 people who arrive each week to see the show is immense and can strip out thousands of pounds from the show's budget. This is why Dave channel preferred to have it filmed without an audience and on single camera.

The problem with the Kryten design this season is the nose...it just doesn't look right. It's too thin

So apparently there is actually some IRL theological belief in the theory that it was Judas, not Jesus, who died on the cross and allowed Jesus to live. Except it is not from Christianity, but rather from Islam, which largely rejects the belief that Jesus died on the cross and instead has him ascending to Heaven directly (like Elijah in Judaism). Also, woohoo, Dragon Blade shoutout!

Of all the problematic aspects of Red Dwarf, the one flaw that always bothered me more than any other is their incredibly flippant attitude towards canon. Even given the fact that it's a comedy (so apparently that makes canon less important) the show still has fans and it's so dismissive of Doug Naylor (who apparently used to shut Rob Grant down whenever he brought up the subject of consistency) who clearly isn't willing to learn. Thing is, Only Fools and Horses could afford to be more flippant about canon, and yet they always remained very committed to being consistent even though they had been around for several years. Yes it's true they did have the same writer, but so does Red Dwarf. Now I can be very forgiving about a lot of the continuity errors throughout the shows history, but the gazpacho soup line is classic. I mean, they made an entire episode about it for flip sake, it's not like it's easy to forget, in fact I actually think if Lister had said 'I wouldn't call saying "gazpacho soup" dignified' it would have been funnier. Yes it makes less sense than 'mummy, mummy' but the oddness of the line is still funny and it draws fans of the series back to that classic moment.

Theory: Pree didn't actually go rogue - Lister asked her for help motivating his future self, & by the end of the episode he's achieved everything on the list. She sacrificed herself to get him onto the engineering program (which is tragically never mentioned again)

The utter hell they went through for episodes 5 and 6 is wild. Apparently one of the spiked machines was just like... eight buff guys? My favorite bit of this season is definitely Lister swanning around in red pajamas, Craig Charles looks good for his age.

Actually, some Gnostics had you covered. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Judas "In contrast to the canonical gospels, which paint Judas as a betrayer who delivered Jesus to the authorities for crucifixion in exchange for money, the Gospel of Judas portrays Judas's actions as done in obedience to instructions given to him by Jesus of Nazareth. It does not claim that the other disciples knew about Jesus's true teachings. On the contrary, it asserts that they had not learned the true Gospel, which Jesus taught only to Judas Iscariot, the sole follower belonging to the "holy generation" among the disciples."
