Smell Disorders: Anosmia, Phantosmia, and Parosmia (Why and What Happens?)

Animation goes over why and what exactly happens when the sense of smell changes, whether complete loss occurs (anosmia) versus phantom smells (phantosmia) or distorted smells (parosmia). Collective, these smell orders can be classified as types of dysosmia.
The smell sense is due to about 400 different olfactory receptors. Quite a bit more than the 3 photoreceptors used in vision. A given smell perception is due to a specific combination of activated olfactory receptors just like how a particular color perception is due to a specific combination of activated red, blue, and green photoreceptors.
Damage to the olfactory receptors results in dysosmia. The TYPE of damage results in anosmia, parosmia, or phantosmia.

My brain too thinks I smell things that aren’t near me. Sometimes it’s a smell from distant past (Avon Perfume from childhood) but then it might be a more recent experience (an essential oil). Sometimes it’s food. Once it was salty ocean air, another time chlorinated pool water. A fleeting visual image often follows or proceeds. A neurologist told me the pathways for smell and memory run side by side, in the brain. I’m fortunate because always these are pleasant smells. This all began after a period of extreme stress, exhaustion and then grief (loss of a loved one).

I’ve had Olfactory Hallucination since I was 10. Strangely, it started on the morning of my first Sleep Paralysis episode (which was also the morning after my grandma died in our home). This was in 1995 and everyone thought I was lying when I told them I could smell something so bad that I didn’t want to eat and everything tasted like the smell, too. It lasted for an agonizing 6 months. From then on they’ve always been random smells, at random times, for random durations. I get chemical-like smells and foul odors the most. But sometimes I get smells that are “pleasant” too. And when I say “pleasant,” don’t smell like flowers or perfume-they’re just oddly satisfying to me (and I miss them when they’re gone). However, all these smells cannot be compared to anything I’ve ever smelled on this earth. I just suddenly smell things that don’t exist to the point of waking me from a dream because I’m disgusted by what I’m smelling in the dream and then I awake with that smell. I am turning 39 this year so I’m approaching 30 years with this disorder and I’ve never gotten treatment because I was always disbelieved as a child. However, I’m pretty much used to it now. I am suffering with covid at this time and I definitely have a distorted sense of smell from it (VERY chemically smell). I know what a sinus infection smells like and this is way beyond that. Definitely a first in my smell catalog. I feel bad for anyone who’s not used to this and suffering from it for the first time due to covid.

I have had phantosmia since 2017. It is so hard living like this because all my phantom smells are terrible and they last for weeks at a time. They give me migraines and make me want to vomit.

My parosmia started in October 2021. Of course, it was the worst in the first 1-2 months. I could not eat meat or eggs and garlic or onions. I didn’t consistently stick with any treatment or therapy, but I often took some multivitamins. It has been around 8 months and I am feeling a lot better and I am now eating McDonald’s chicken nuggets as well as BBQ chicken wings. Eggs and onions are still a bit iffy, but I would say I am 80% recovered. TIME IS THE BEST MEDICINE, STICK IN THERE YOU WILL GET BETTER. SOME WILL RECOVER FASTER THAN OTHERS

For a week, I lost my sense of smell. When I get it back, I get a strange odor of burning or gas, followed by a whiff of cigarette smoke. I try to tell the other people, but they don't listen to me. @@wemoveforward6413 I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope you’ll recover completely soon. I’m doing minimum 20 hours every day. Usually between 22-24 hours so that means one meal a day and avoiding any insulin triggers while fasting. I’ve improved a lot and I’m pretty sure it’s not a coincidence because my situation was rapidly getting worse until 9 days ago when I started the autophagy journey. I did it because I couldn’t deal with my issues anymore. Today I’ll do a 30 hour fast.

I went to an outdoor concert yesterday where people were smoking cigarettes and Joynson spliff some blunts… I don’t know, but some nasty smelling stuff. I tried to cover the smell and filter. My nose is the use of a handkerchief… But it was persistent, and went on for hours. And when I went home with the car, I could still smell it and I could smoke today in the car and I can smell it around me now. I thought it was on my clothes are in my hair… But apparently it’s in my nose… As a phantom smell, it’s crazy although I have to say it’s a nice addition to my tinnitus.😊

I just got COVID for the first time and I am trying to understand why my sense of taste and smell are now amplified. Not sure if there is a category for that but I can't find an explanation to it. I started symptoms 5 days ago but was negative and a day later I was positive. Since then I noticed that anything that contains added sugar or sweeteners is too sweet for me and the same for added salt. Fruits that were acidic to me are now sweet. I can't stand commercial juice. Most cheese is just too salty. How is that possible? I know it's common to lose it or to get it distorted but. To be honest I hope it stays because I could have a healthier life as I love sugar too much. Has anybody experienced anything like that before?

ive had covid twice despite being fully vaccinated 3 injections , , i lost my sense of smell for 4 months over a year a go , it started after flu symptoms which progressed to no smell at all , could eat an onion like an apple and not taste or smell it , nothing , then sense of smell slowly returned but like wiring a light switch incorrectly ii found certain smells would linger , shaving foam , and disinfectant wipes , are so strong now they linger in my nose for hours afterwards its extremely unpleasant , certain food smells , are so unpleasant i have to leave the room , open a fridge and any food , cheese , meat etc , would make me want to vomit , only way round this is to block of your nostrils which really is uncomfortable .
