They didn’t have that Neve board with them while on tour, nor did they have god knows how many microphones and amplifiers Butch Vig used to capture Nevermind’s sound. They only had Kurt Cobain (and Pat Smear later on) on the guitar. Every track on Nevermind has, at the very least, three guitar tracks. They also didn’t have a Yamaha SPX90 rack that Andy Wallace used to process every single guitar and bass track on that record. Nevermind’s production was as complex as it could get for a simple band like Nirvana. Nevermind was not just Cobain, Grohl and Novoselić. Butch Vig made that album what it is. It’s his magnum opus, not just Nirvana’s.
