Hey Mike, having spent more than twenty years as a music examiner for an international exam board, it does come as a bit of a surprise that Trinity has been able to designate this piece as grade 6. In my opinion students at approximately Grade 3 or so would be able to play this. Keep up the great work.
@MikeBarnesDrums Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Dan - there's no doubt that Trinity have tried to make this Rock and Pop syllabus as "accessible" as possible. The Trinity College London Drum kit syllabus is still the gold standard in my view. It's notable however that students often don't get full marks on this, and often find really nailing the two 16ths on the kick in the main groove a real challenge. But I certainly agree that there's less content in this than in many of TCL Drum Kit pieces. Same answer as ever for the serious student - look at both syllabuses! Cheers.

Hey Mike, I am close to doing my grade 6 soon and I am just wondering if you would have marks taken off if you play rimshots when it doesn’t say to as that is my natural tendency to do especially with a song like this. I just don’t want to be marked down for the accuracy. Thanks!
@MikeBarnesDrums4 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for watching. I’d say if your sound is consistent (you’re always hitting it and it always sounds the same), then you’d be ok with that on this one, with it being a big rock sound! Not the case for all the songs though. Cheers for watching and good luck! 👊🏻

how difficult is this song? I know its grade 6, but doesn't seem as difficult as smooth criminal. Does it have odd time signature or anything particularly technical about this song that makes it this level?
@MikeBarnesDrums Жыл бұрын
Bass drum part (playing it smoothly and cleanly), changing grooves, fills and middle section. Probably not as much content as Smooth Criminal but please don't underestimate it. It's a challenging part to play authentically and get a great mark I'd say. Thanks for watching.
@hellodosk24582 жыл бұрын
For guys who had trouble at the start of the song (bar 4), you just need to kick the bass as fast as you could and you should get along with the music.
Would sell my soul to the devil to be able to play this within the next year!!! Hahaha

There’s no crescendo written in the part for this version, so I’m playing the part as it appears on the book (Trinity Rock and Pop Grade 6 book). Remember these arrangements are not always direct copies of the original drum part 👊🏻

Hi, thanks for watching! There's lots of things you can do to improve, I've got two videos about that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6Smepmjdpl9d6M kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYPCoH2dj7Zke8U I think what drummers often do is just play the songs, but for me it's so important to build up the associated skills separately too, hopefully these videos will help with that. It takes time and effort, stick at it! Also if you haven't, my advice is seek the advice of an experienced teacher, who can help guide you through the process. Cheers!

Surely this is one of the easier grade 6 drum songs? I've been learning an easier version of this intro (basically without cymbals) as I'm currently grade 3. And the song feels like a grade 3/4 song. The basic beat is really easy.
@MikeBarnesDrums4 жыл бұрын
Hi Evan, thanks for watching! Don’t underestimate this. LOTS of students say that and then lose marks on it. The bass drum part needs to be nailed to sound great and get full credit. Cheers 👊🏻

@MikeBarnesDrums6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. Why do I have a real drum set?! Why wouldn't you want the real thing! There's nothing like the feel and sound of the real thing man. E-kits etc are great (you can see I have one in my studio, next to the real kit) but the acoustic is king! And ha yes good kits can be expensive, but you can get a useable kit for not too much money. Cheers!
@niak94676 жыл бұрын
meh, i ha to practise drums as well so my mom bought an e-kit, but my apartment is small so we can only clamp it together between the balcony and the cupboards :p. So i dont rly anna pplay that now until I can buy a real drum set :p
@MikeBarnesDrums6 жыл бұрын
Ah! Well many a great drummer started off on pillows, Dave Grohl is always talking about how that's what he did when he started! I didn't have a kit at all for a while when I first started. If you really want to play, go for it, you'll get better tools along the way. Good luck!
