Musicians perfect, but performed a bit too fast. This piece is neither a war march nor a thunder dance. It is rather a festive-like music, even if very lively. If played too fast, the "singing" melodies within this overture get abused.

If played too fast in the beginning the strings will sound like a swarm of angry bees and then you know: it’s too fast.

On the other hand, if it's performed too slow, it drags horribly and the brass and percussion parts don't make sense and seem like mistakes in composition. This performance seems like it's at a pretty good tempo (comes in at about 6:44). But even Levine and the Vienna Phil. who take it at an even faster tempo (6:30) make it sound right: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enSpi4KXeM2eh5Y Levine's mentor, the great George Szell, conducted it in an even more sprightly manner (6:18): kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKbQpKtsqdWSfdU And here's the Czech Philharmonic (and THEY should know) from a live performance just a few months ago. Sounds just about perfect at 6:36: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6O8pX6Qnr12m8U
