I’m actually quite hyped for the return here. And I’m pretty sure that “Niles”, as shown here, is probably how Zero originally looked before he became…that monstrosity we saw in the previous arc. Who knows? We might get to see more of his background in the upcoming movie. And as someone who was quite interested ever since he hinted at some kind of dark past, that’s quite exciting for me.

I have to admit one of the my favorite parts was when Melony points to Niles and says "our friend there". We've been used to accept new characters as they immediately become part of the main team dynamics, so even if Niles didn't show up much, we might've been condition to accept him "oh, he's just part of Mario's group of crazy friends", making the twist quite interesting. Dude, I literally had a theory that Niles was Zero from the start. At first I thought he was a jerk, and as time went on, I got suspicious. Eventually, the god box episode fully gave me proof that Niles is Zero. How? At the end of the episode, Niles mentions Melony’s boyfriend Axol. Does not seem as proof right? Expect, Melony never once told Niles about Axol. I mean this with all my heart, I started screaming zero the second we realize Niles is not real. I am so so pumped for the movie they are making. Too bad it is only 2 weeks away, but we can survive that long. I hope.

My original running theory was that Niles was just Axol’s spirit guiding Melony, since Niles looks sort of like Axol/a humanoid axolotyl, but this was very unexpected. However I suppose my previous theory still has some merit, since Zero completely consumed Axol’s mind body & spirit & basically became a corrupted Axol, which could in turn create Niles look. This was such a surprising and cool plottwist. Love it. I didn't expect it at all and that is what makes it so great. With every episode and especially every arc, you continue to surpass my expectations by strides at a time. From sm64 bloopers, stupid mario, if Mario was in, wotfi, the Meggy arc, bob arc, all of these we’re amazing and filled all of us with laughs and and smiles for years…. Then you started down the path towards evolution with the release of the waluigi arc… your first darker story… it was a surprisingly welcome change for your channel…. Then came the anime arc with our first character death followed by an eerie quiet… you took a deep dive into this zone and it paid off… soon after came the Meggy’s destiny movie which had a genuine goodbye to the character we lost… after that came the KZbin arc where the story of smg4 really began to bloom into a universe of complexity… it was surprisingly dark yet well balanced… a story about a man who hated is counterpart so much that he was willing to completely erase him in order to assume control over everything his opposite built… then came a decade anniversary with a start to an arc that would truly change EVERYTHING… that arc was called genesis… this arc was a masterpiece. A brilliant dance of light and darkness that had me craving more and more up until the GREATEST WOTFI you’ve ever done with a cataclysmic plot unlike any other. It followed suits with a heartbreaking death and a chorus of sadness because even with the death of an evil and a universe saved, there still was no happy ending… now that same evil has returned and seeks to enter a world all too familiar to us all…. I am being perfectly and wholeheartedly honest when I say your potential keeps climbing and climbing and climbing showing no signs of stopping. This kind of potential is exceptionally rare among KZbinrs of both the past and present and that is something to take pride in. I did! 100%! Niles had too much interest in Melony, if you think about it, Zero was defeated by her! My theory was that he would've wanted her as his next host and woe and behold, Niles showed up! I suspected him from the start even when he mentioned Axol, which she never mentioned at all! A little interesting he was just a figment of her imagination and not a real person, but that also proved my theory quite a bit. He leached himself onto her and focused as her teacher to have a worthy host for true physical power.

So after zero was killed he placed a piece of himself into melony as a failsafe incase he was killed or defeated so he had a backup plan to make his own universe but since Axol's vessel was destroyed his body was nonexistent meaning he needed a powerful source of pure energy and pure power to rebuild himself since melony's vessel may be too resistant...or he uses her vessel to complete his plan since the very first time he appeared...none the less whatever he has planned this time means the possible end of their entire universe unless zero is completely destroyed the entire time he used the form of niles to trick melony and gain her trust just so he could use her power and her vessel treating her less like a friend and more like a puppet

I agree with fighting Zero in his true form, but as great as Axol was, it’s best for the writing that he stay dead. Like Mw Will said, resurrecting him would kill the emotional impact of his original death. The idea of his ghost showing up at the end, on the other hand, could certainly work as a way for the crew to see him one last time and say their proper goodbyes without bringing him back for good and ruining the end of the last arc.

Now things are definitely getting interesting! I actually remember seeing a theory where Niles is actually just Zero and Axol fused. With the three fingers, the one eye, the axolotl look, the turtleneck sweater, and even the weird personality. I noticed how he would always go from mischievous, calm and cool- to just legitimately kind and supporting. And seeing it in this episode made me believe that even though it's slapped in your face that Zero is back, the tsundere-like kindness I saw from Niles made me think that there's still just a HINT of Axol in there. But that's probably just a naive belief.

I saw that too when he said in one of the episodes that she can do it and seconds later ordered 100 Push ups I think that since axol got fused with zero in the other arc he became his “Avatar” in this universe (if I remember it correctly that’s way smg3 and 4 look like Mario because he is their avatar) and with this knowledge he entered Melony’s mind after his “Defeat” and used the “Avatar” he got to create this niles persona to trick her like he did, but , because he still has axol fused within him there is still some kindness and good intentions in him and that can maybe come to play in the movie

It becomes a problem when one realizes he could have sneaked implication in the Standard Meme Videos that Niles either wasn't real, or Niles and Melony had more time to bond... Such as having a Few Scenes where Melony is chatting with Niles, and then a Character comes in, asks who she's talking to, only for Melony to turn around, See Niles not there, and the character to leave... And then Niles drops out of the ceiling like Batman and cracks a Joke about Melony losing it. It would have been a bigger knife twist, as It would have just made out Niles to have been Melony's Cheeky Mentor with a Wicked Streak.

I like that Zero devised a plan that made Melony AND us viewers think Niles was a normal person. I can bet no one expected that. It reminded me of how Alex Mason had undergone the very same procedure thanks to Reznov when he was programmed to commit the JFK assassination.
