That Petty car was always one of the best looking race cars to ever get on a race track.

Most. Iconic paint job ever sprayed on ANY race car in Motorsports history, they call him "The KING" for many reasons & that paint job is one of them.

I''m sorry that it's only the last 50 laps or so, but how about that picture quality!? Daaaamn!

It was just highlights shown the following week on the Sports Spectacular. CBS was live at Milwaukee for the USAC race at Milwaukee. Only Yates, and lee Petty were there

Awesome video :-). Do you have this race in satellite feed?
@AutoRockinRacing947 жыл бұрын
I just thought it was from the Spectacular because of how it started but that wouldn't make sense, it was 1982. Still doesn't bother me at all because anything is better than nothing from that time period.

*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1982 TALLADEGA 500 (19 of 30):* #44 Terry Labonte (2652 points, GM) #88 Bobby Allison (-14 with 5 wins, GM) #11 Darrell Waltrip (-146 with 6 wins, GM) #67 Buddy Arrington (-386, Dodge) #15 Dale Earnhardt (-398 with 1 win, Ford) #33 Harry Gant (-406 with 1 win, GM) #71 Dave Marcis (-435 with 1 win, GM) #47 Ron Bouchard (-458, GM) #43 Richard Petty (-460, GM) Ricky Rudd (GM #3 in 11th) stopped suffering from so many mechanical DNFs. Jody Ridley (Ford #90 in 12th) has been improving over the months. Benny Parsons (14th) was having a hard time securing a good seat after getting pissed at Ranier for some mechanical DNFs. Cale Yarborough (GM #27) won the Carolina 500 and the Motor State 400 and Neil Bonnet (Ford #21) won the World 600 despite both aiming to only race around half of the season. Tim Richmond (GM #2) got his maiden win in the Riverside 400km. Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Talladega’s case, the early race is the Alabama 500 while the Summer one is the Talladega 500.

The technical difficulty with Cale's in-car camera was Cale making engine sounds. Haha

Junior Johnson had 14 gallon gas cans on pit road, so they put more in the tank, than what the announers thought

I remember this race well... Notchback GM cars except the Pontiac LaMans Chrome bumpers on the Buick Regal J.D. Stacy cars (none on the same team) 180 degree headers, why some cars sound like six cylinders Ken Squire calling "Texas" Terry Labonte ..Labunty The camera shot of the cars in someones mirrored sunglasses (a CBS Sports staple) And..the shirt that DW had made "14 races, 13 faces...Sorry about that"

They were running V-6’s mainly in the Buick’s. It was a 4.1 liter. I think Chevy also offered one in the grand national races. They weren’t used long because of the expense. V-8’s were cheaper and parts more readily available.

@@jb1765 ???? Later in the 80s in the BGN Series ran the V-6s. Never in the Cup Series.

Buddy had won enough of these races by 1982 to know he made that move too late, Darrell won both Dega races in 82 enroute to the Winston Cup...

I still find it interesting how some of those cars sound different from each other. Almost like a 4 banger sound at times. I still don’t know the definite answer behind that sound.
@LCM22487 жыл бұрын
Because they were built by motor guys, by teams and by motor companies. Its not like today where there are only 4 engine suppliers for everyone, a lot of teams did them themselves, including the independants and everyone used different parts, old parts, new parts - plus they had their own methods of tuning them as well. It was nothing like the "spec" motors of today
@MarkMeadows907 жыл бұрын
Also probably different exhaust setups as well?
@LCM22487 жыл бұрын
that too - especially on the bigger teams. Guys like Junior and Bud Moore, that's how they found their advantages just little tweaks like that. You had to have wider and smoother pipes for the hotter air and more torque you would pull out. these days all the teams as well as the independants change out the exhausts for every race, because with the almost spec motors you need more exhaust for the different type of car and track. When I worked up at Morgan's he had three cars. I remember help changing a exhaust on the mile and a half car to go to Kentucky

Yes - 180 degree headers make that higher pitched sound - Junior Johnson used them for years
@BmastaBerdley6 жыл бұрын
The 180 degree headers will give the V8s that buzzy V6 sound

Ken Squier was a great announcer, but I always got a kick out of his car length estimates....

Baker didn't have the car to get by - I think Petty could have got him on a slingshot but he was too far back on the last lap.
@Stiitchjones3 жыл бұрын
He did have the car...broke loose on him when went to go by at the finish line. Would've probably led more laps but Waddell wouldn't let him run out front LOL.

It was flag to flag (but they would leave at times, '83 was the first proper Flag to flag Talladega race on CBS. I bet this was a network back-up reel, quarter inch reel video that leaked out
