@@davidthayer6969 "old" Ford? Allison was in a Talladega, which was new in 1969. Funny (pathetic) how when a Chrysler wins, you're so full of excuses for how Ford didn't and when a Ford wins, you say really stupid things like "wasn't badass enough to even come close to beating allisons old ford" (you only use caps to scream 'fact', eh?). CH said the car looked badass, which it does. As for your definition of 'come close', it changes depending on if 2nd place is a Ford or Chrysler. If Chryslers qualify up front, you'll talk about how much faster the Ford was to finish ahead of them, but when Fords qualify up front and 3 of the 4 cars on the lead lap are Chryslers, you'll claim they weren't 'even close'. Because you are a bore.

Petty only won one race with that Ford, that was Riverside and I was there for it! Thanks Dad!
@Ziggy_Moonglow
@Ziggy_Moonglow 2 жыл бұрын
Petty had 9 wins in the Ford in 1969, 1 at Riverside, 7 on short tracks and 1 at Dover. He was driving the Ford Torino Cobra (short nosed 427) at Riverside. His win at Dover was his only "Aero War" win in the Ford Torino Talladega. Photos I've got show him with the Talladega for his wins at Martinsville, win at Dover, as well as his DNF at Thompson (rear end) while the photos from Riverside show him in a Cobra. Good chance the Cobra you saw at Riverside only had one win, being that it was reskinned for Daytona and beyond and then skinned back to the short nose later in it's life. Very cool you got to see that race at Riverside!!

I've watched this race several times & it was a good one. The Allison's were so popular Bobby could have been gouvener of Alabama anytime he wanted. The factory support was the only thing keeping these cars from becoming airborne. France's decision to ban these airodynamic's from NASCAR was short sighted to say the least...

Ford won the 1969 battle, 15 to 3, and Chrysler won the 1970 battle, 12 to 7. Ford won the 1969-1970 "Aero War" 22 to 15. Total wins, including short tracks for 1969-1970 come to 37 for Ford and 36 for Chrysler.

@@goldenltd1970 Yes, everything you said is also true, I'll be honest, Chrysler couldn't really compete (especially with sales) towards Ford then, but honestly, that may be why I respect Mopar a little more, they are the underdog to me. I may be fighting a losing battle, but you gotta admit, a company like Chrysler must have been real desperate to make a car as crazy unique as the Daytona and Superbird to get even remotely close to competing with Ford. Don't get me wrong though, I still have major respect for Fomoco though, they were really the king of motorsports, they were even going to make their own crazy unique aero car before they pulled out in 1970. any who I guess I'm off my soapbox, have a good day.

I bleed 100% ford blue but I do give credit to all manufacturers involved in nascar I gotta say Chrysler corporation sure went all out in the 69 70 seasons with there Daytonas and superbirds as they would prove to be tough competition against ford and ultimately ford would come out on top in total wins over the 2 seasons but as we all know it was not easy! I’ve always liked some of the cars Chrysler corporation put out and the Daytona charger 500 and super bird are no exception Id take one of them no problem to go along side the talladega and cyclone spoiler If only I could have all 5 lol but again what an amazing time in nascar racing history love seeing these aero and winged warriors go at it super fun to watch 👍

It's a shock that mesothelioma never run rampant over these awesome drivers, well if all the cars had the same amount of asbestos in their car like Pearson's! Even his water bottle was wrapped in it!
@bloqk16
@bloqk16 Жыл бұрын
The term "iron men" is apt for that generation of drivers. You made a good point about mesothelioma, something I hadn't considered before. Perhaps the discipline the drivers had back then when it came to fitness, such as not being heavy drinkers, may have helped. I had an uncle that worked the US shipyards in World War II, exposed to a lot of asbestos; but he was also a heavy drinker, too. Ten years after the war, he died from mesothelioma, and was in his early forties at the time.

No. Very few if any live races back then. In 70 ABC started carrying the last part of a few races live. In 71 a race at the 1/2 mile Greenville Pickens Speedway of only 200 laps was carried live flag to flag. The first 500 mile race televised live flag to flag was the 79 Daytona 500. Both the Greenville and Daytona races are on the You Tube.

ABC-TV Wide World of Sports could get away with televise-delay the race, as back then, mainstream media did little to report on NASCAR races, save for the Daytona 500. Out in California the local TV newscasts sports segments wouldn't report on the race. Newspapers 'may' have a race result listing of the race buried in the backpages of the Monday edition sports section. Those that subscribed to Autoweek newspaper, such as myself, _may_ get the issue in the mail by Friday that would report on the previous Sunday races. So, the ABC-TV highlights of the race, televised six days later, most TV viewers would be clueless of whom the winner would be.

It's been known that a Ford engine makes more power at the end of the race. After the Ford's raced at Le Mans, the engines were put back on a Dyno and they made more power. It appears the same thing happened to Ford's engines in NASCAR too.
