It's actually pretty appropriate. That movie had Disney working together with Warner Bros., so it makes sense to have a song that was used by a Disney-esque Warner Bros. character.

Also, fun fact, these are basically the caveman iterations of Wakko and Dot from Animaniacs. Foxy and Roxy were repurposed for Tiny Toons for a bit, one inlcuding a very familiar song and adding a third, lanky character. The three of which eventually evolving into the Animaniacs, so surprisingly, Foxy and Roxy, as obscure as they seem, are actually probably seeing more success nowadays and fondness than Oswald did.

Foxy and Roxy had to be redesigned in Tiny Toons because Warner Bros. didn’t want to step into the Disney legal minefield and so their Mickey Mouse-esque designs were redone to be more fox like.

Okay to clarify to everyone: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit first premiered in Trolley Troubles on September 5, 1927. Hugh Harman actually helped animate that one. Oswald was created by Walt Disney Studios on a contract with Universal Studios. In 1928 Walt Disney attempted to renew his contract with Charles Mintz at Universal but could not find an agreement. Mintz offered low pay and many of Walt's animators had jumped ship in favor of Mintz' studio so he decided to leave the project. Mickey Mouse was created that year to replace Oswald as Walt Disney Studio's star. Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising were among the ones who left Walt to work for Mintz. Mickey became incredibly popular and beat out Oswald. Universal replaced Mintz, effectively firing Harman and Ising. They then started working at Warner Bros. on their Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. Rudolf Ising then created Foxy and (the at the time unnamed) Roxy for Merrie Melodies. Ising almost certainly used Mickey as an inspiration. Some would say he was a rip-off. Either way, Foxy and Roxy were Warner Bros. first original characters to be created in-house and not brought in elsewhere. Smile Darn Ya Smile premiered on September 5, 1931 and was a remake of Trolley Troubles. How they did that, likely without permission, I don't know. In today's copyright world it wouldn't fly. Foxy was "killed" in his third and final short, One More Time in 1931. Ising left Warner Bros. with Harman in 1933(?) and took the rights to Foxy with him. Foxy was not used in another theatrical short. As far as I know, this song is original to this short. Billy Cotton made a recording after this aired and of course this song was featured in the 1988 movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Foxy and Roxy would make an appearance in Tiny Toons Adventures in 1992 but reworked to look less like Mickey and more like original fox characters. This is pretty much what I could cobble together as the history of Foxy and this short. So yeah... Even though I really enjoy this short it's pretty much a copy of things that already existed.

A lot of the characters during this time period where trying to imitate Mickey Mouse design wise and personality wise .So this lead to everybody trying to imitate Disney . Actually, they were created by the same people who technically created Mickey Mouse for Walt Disney. It all started in 1925, Hugh Harman drew images of mice on a portrait of Walt Disney. Since Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks decided to use the mice as the inspiration for Mickey and Minnie. Since Disney decided to capitalize on Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising's idea, they decided to make their own characters from the same mould.

The Foxy Trilogy (how I imagine it): Lady Play Your Mandolin: Foxy enters a pub and meets Roxy. At this point, he starts to date her. Smile, Darn Ya, Smile: Foxy searches for a job to make money for his girlfriend. He considers becoming a trolley driver, but a nightmare makes him choose otherwise. One More Time: Foxy becomes a police officer. He meets Roxy whilst on duty and she helps Foxy catch some criminals. One of them escaped and would injure Foxy heavily in the behind. Foxy would go to the hospital, his final words being: “So long, folks!”

i think that is because they took more time produce an animation.this cartoons were displayed in theatres.due the demans of the television early 80's cartoons have to be produced in less time.it depends on the budget too even nowadays you can find poorly animated cartoons.

Maybe it's the song but this simple cartoon seems better to me than the earlier 1927 Oswald's Trolley Troubles (Disney), and much much better than the later Freleng directed 1934 Buddy's Trolley Troubles (WB). Foxy and Roxy only had a 3 cartoon run and were clearly Mickey and Minnie clones, with tails and pointed ears. I think Disney was filing cease and desist law suits against all the studios cloning Mickey so maybe that is why. Best trolley cartoons were the Toonerville Trolley toons.

This is actually a total, legit horror show. I can't bear to watch it at any point. wow. The vocal style, the Stepford Wives message of conformity... maybe I'm missing the second degree here, but then again wasn't this for kids?! Gah. Nope. Dark af.

A lot of people are pointing out foxy being a mickey mouse ripoff. I can see where they're coming from, but ideas do come from certain places.
