A brief range session with my favorite revolver to shoot, the Smith and Wesson 686+ Talo 3 5 7 Edition with 3 inch barrel. It is just so beautiful and smooth and the trigger is so crisp that it is a joy to have in your hand.

I have one and It's my favorite too. I also have a 6" plus and recently added a 4"plus. My very first big boy gun was a 6" 30 years ago. Gotta love the 686!

I still don't know too much about guns, but I bought this same exact gun in the 5-inch model several months ago. I'm 58 and this is the first, and so far only, gun I've ever owned. It even has the same grips. Unfortunately, I don't practice hardly any just because of the cost of ammo. I live in Alabama.

You chose a great gun to be your first. The 686 is one of the best guns ever designed in my opinion. The cost of 38 and 357 is the downside these days though. It used to not be that much more than 9mm, but times have changed unfortunately.

I have a 4 inch 686 from 1983 and it is a 6 round gun. I love the action of this gun. It has a smooth trigger and is very accurate. It came with the wood grips but they are too bulky so I put Hogue grips on it and it feels better.
@Preacher357
@Preacher357 Жыл бұрын
The original Smith and Wesson target grips were thick, which was really good for cartridges such as 44 Magnum because it spread the recoil out across your palm. For a 357, though, the thinner grips from Altamont they use now work well. If you decide you want wood again, try Altamont's website. You can buy the exact same grips there that Smith and Wesson puts on their guns now, including with the S&W logo.

My 686+ is my primary home defense weapon along with my 92 f/s as back up or vice versa before I reach for my long guns if necessary. Just like you I prefer my 686+ to my python as it's trigger action is not only smooth bur has shorter travel which is ideal for repeat shots.

No. It is a 7 shot. The original 686 is a 6 shot, but the 686+ is 7. I must not have been getting enough oxygen to my brain if I said it was 6.

I have found after maybe 150 rounds of 357 the screw on the top or sight strap if that is what it’s called starts to come loose. I don’t know if this could be considered normal or faulty? If anybody has experienced this please comment.
@Preacher357
@Preacher357 4 ай бұрын
It isn't uncommon for screws to loosen on revolvers, especially those chambered for magnum calibers. If it is a problem, it can generally be solved by using some blue (not red) loctite on the screw. Otherwise, just snug them back up every so often.
@onedirection3510
@onedirection3510 4 ай бұрын
@@Preacher357 Thank you for the prompt and informative reply. I had thought about the Loctite. I was concerned that down the road if the Loctite breaks then I would have perhaps a more serous problem. Like you said, I think I’ll just keep a screwdriver handy for the occasional loosening. I’m glad it’s not a serious issue.

Is a revolver still relevant today? I'm worried about paying $1 per round in 5 years.
@Preacher357
@Preacher357 9 ай бұрын
I don't know if the cost of 38 and 357 will be that high, but it is certainly not as cheap as 9mm. Also, revolvers are just as effective now as they always were. If you could protect yourself with one 100 years ago, you still can today. Are there more efficient and effective options now... maybe? But that doesn't mean that revolvers can't have their place as well. My suggestion for anyone that loves revolvers is to invest in reloading equipment and components. After the initial investment it cuts the cost per round dramatically.
@boricuaarecibo9259
@boricuaarecibo9259 8 ай бұрын
I agree about reloading I reload a lot of 357 at a cost of about 30 cents per round

Sights must be off. Looks like it’s shooting low & to the right.
@Preacher357
@Preacher357 2 жыл бұрын
The were a little off, but I don't remember exactly where now. I think with the 38s it was shooting slightly high right because I think I was aiming low left a little. With the magnums it changed though, and usually magnums drop, so they may have been shooting low. Also if you are referencing when I was shooting the 80 yard plate, I was moving around trying to find where they were going. The one that hit way low right was one where I intentionally held extra low so that I could see where the rounds were going because I did not see the first two and assumed that meant they were probably high. After I saw the round in the dirt I was able to walk it home in a couple of shots.
