I think the story that you mention (at 19:26) is true. The guns were destroyed after they were turned in. Very sad indeed. (I was issued the 13-3 round butt, 3" barrel in 1987 and carried it for a few years. Great revolver.)

Yes I’m afraid so and I’ve had other comments on other federal issued firearms that they are normally destroyed. Very sad and really a complete waste of tax payer dollars as well IMO.

FBI requested a model 13 3inch barrel, round butt. They used the FBI LOAD which others have commented on. If you want to see it in the movies THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Starling used it to take out Buffalo Bill. Again, love gun history. Great vid.👍.

Excellent video! I always enjoy your videos. The Model 13 is a fine revolver, one that often is overlooked by folks in general. I do like adding the Tyler T-Grips on these particular type of grips. The T-Grips make the grips sit better in the hand for extended range sessions.

I started the FBI Academy in May, 1988 and was issued a 3 inch Smith and Wesson Model 13. That was the general issue weapon until they started issuing the 1076's (for a short time) in 1991. The 13 was a good gun. Mine was really accurate. It came with crappy wooden grips and a metal spacer on the grip to fill it out. But, I got the FBI armorer to put rubber Pachmyr grips on mine before I left the academy. Edited to say, and I had one of those crappy holsters issued to me. I got rid of it as soon as I graduated and bought a Bianchi for it.
@thedailydefender14082 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks for the great comment! I’m always a bit surprised S&W stuck with those magna stocks as they knew most people didn’t like them and added the Tyler grip adapter or went to a rubber grip. What was your experience like with the 1076 and what did you move to after that?
@ralphholiman74012 жыл бұрын
@@thedailydefender1408 , I never got a 1076 (mostly only new agents got them) I transferred over to the DEA in 1991, and was issued a Glock 17. The 1076's were really accurate, but they suffered from limp wrist jamming really bad for shooters with weak grips. The FBI ended up taking the 1076's up and issuing Sig P228's (off a DEA contract, as the DEA was going back and forth between P228's and G17's for new agent classes at the time.)
@thedailydefender14082 жыл бұрын
@@ralphholiman7401 thanks, I too had read agents struggled with the 1076 and then they actually had trouble with the firearms themselves (can’t recall if that was a frame or slide cracking issue now). I found it interesting that S&W was running the 1076 program for the FBI at the same time they were running the.40S&W and the 4006 and released both at the same time. I guess the Sig was too simple to move over to or didn’t want or want to wait for the 4006. Great firearm the 228/229.

Thank you for the comment, always nice to have the original box and papers. Your also right about the start point at a 13-1 and I’m not sure of the reasoning/ significance of that…it’s very closely a lined w/ the M10 and I guess there was even a version of the M10 in .357 so perhaps smith simply felt the Eng work had already been done and started w the -1 but that is a very good point that I missed.

Thanks, yep something almost magical about that time frame, I’m sure it has more to do with the type of machinery being used and the hand fitting parts more than anything else during that period but it comes together to produce a pretty amazing product. Having said all of that I had a 27-10 4” I think it was that seemed very well made and the trigger was excellent.

The stocks should be serial numbered to the gun , that will let you know if they are replacement stocks or original to the gun; most officers in my area would replace the factory stocks with larger more manageable recoil reduction grips, and over time the original stocks would be sold, given away or just lost
@thedailydefender14082 жыл бұрын
Yep I agree on the matching numbers, to your point it seems few actually match. It was all too common, by all types of owners it seems, to change them out. I did it on several in the 90s I’m afraid to say and the smith I was issued as a sidearm had rubber grips straight away.

I got lucky and my mother in law who was a guard at a nuclear facility in TX gave me her old service revolver. She had that job in the early 70's. @thedailydefender14088 ай бұрын
Hey that’s a neat story, I’ve heard of over stamps before but can’t specifically recall the reasons, I can only assume those frames were initially earmarked for the M10 and then they were needed for the government contract and restamped. Also unique w the s/n.

Seriously for 1st time hand gun guyers the old School revolvers are worth looking for/at as home defense guns. 👌 FYI don't discount them out. Just because it's the latest and greatest doesn't mean it won't do the job. Meaning protect you and your family 👪 ❤.
@thedailydefender14082 жыл бұрын
Agree with your point that a revolver is still a viable self defense tool especially for home defense. Generally I think the consensus is that one of the smaller j frame revolvers isn’t the best for 1st time buyers. Certainly a nice 4” K frame could be a viable option. Again all depending on overall needs and skill levels.
@craigbenz4835 Жыл бұрын
I have revolvers with that grip, and I just can't shoot that small grip well.
@thedailydefender1408 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment , a lot of people seem to agree. It was very common to add the grip adapters to both the j and k frames. It seems a lot of folks over the years ditched the standard stocks and a lot of rubber grips were used, in fact I guess it was late 80s /90s smith started offering rubber grips on some models. I think most of the current j frames all have rubber grips. Nowhere as pretty as wood but considerably more functional. I will say taking off the standard magna stocks and going with a target stock makes a big difference for me, just did that on a 65 4”.
