What ChromaPop lens is the best for my riding condition? Sunglass Rob talks with Smith going through each lens on the spectrum and when to take on your next run.
ChromaPop lenses come in three categories divided among 11 lenses: Sun, Everyday, and Storm. Differences in visible light transmission (VLT) and base color distinguishes each lens from the others.
Additionally, all Smith IO series come with a Storm lens for low light conditions and either an everyday or sunny day lens.
ChromaPop Sun Collection:
Green Mirror - 9% VLT w/ grey base
Black - 12% VLT w/ grey base
Platinum Mirror - 13% VLT w/ grey base
Red - 16% VLT w/ grey base
ChromaPop Everyday Collection:
Green Mirror - 23% VLT w/ brown base
Violet Mirror - 23% VLT w/ brown base
Red Mirror - 25% VLT w/ brown base
Photocromic Rose Flash -30% - 50% VLT w/ rose base (VLT changes with lighting conditions)
Rose - 36% VLT without a mirror w/ rose base
ChromaPop Storm Collection:
Rose Flash - 50% VLT w/ blue flash base
Yellow Flash - 65% VLT w/ yellow blue flash base

I just bought the Squad XL in blackout. It is incredible and I feel like it will do well in light overcast conditions. In full sun I felt like I had nothing on until I took them off. Wow, do they protect and provide incredible contrast. I was happy to pay the money on the spot when I compared them to my older Smith pair.

good review of the hole set up! But I think you are missing out to mention an important field of usage for the Storm-lenses - the dark time of the season in the northern Europe! Here in Sweden it is dark from december to januari when skiing in the morning and in the afternoon past 14! The sunlight only give us enough light a couple of hour around lunch. So we ski with the electrical lights on in the slopes, and therefore need a lots of high VLT lenses even daytime! :)

Hi there! Great video, finally one that really gives you all the insights you need before you buy a SMITH. But can you maybe tell me what the visible light transmission is for? Why a higher or lower percentage? I am thinking of buying the I/OX Sun Red Mirror!
@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Reinier! Thanks for watching! Visible light transmission is the amount of light that passes through the lens. A higher VLT % means more light is coming through the lens to your eyes and is a lighter tint. A lower VLT % will be a darker tint and will let less light through the lens. The Sun Red mirror is a great lens that you can use for multiple conditions and it will really work great when the sun peeks out. Hope this helps!

I have the googles for I thin 2 years now, they are amazing and honestly, the ease of switching lenses is just incredible. But I got a situation in Val Thorens - a ton of clouds, white snow everywhere and I could barely see the snow at my feet. So I started searching for replacement lenses and then the question came - how can I identify the exact lenses I have that come with the googles? They dont have the name on them, only st and sn (which I guess is sun and storm lines but still not exactly pinpointing the exact model). Also, you mentioned the storm rose is by default the secondary lens - is this guaranteed? Because if yes, probably getting the yellow flash could solve my problem but I need to be sure which one I have..

Hey guys, great video. I'm looking to grab a pair of 4D Mags, either Everyday Red Mirror or Sun Red Mirror. Do you think that I'll ever regret going the Everyday Mirror route? Skiing in northern California, most likely more bluebird days than overcast/cloudy. Also, do you think that getting the Sun Black lens will be too dark on partly cloudy or even overcast days? I have lighter colored eyes if that helps answer the question and typically have more sensitivity to sunlight.
@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! Ultimately, it's a matter of how light sensitive you are. I also have light-colored eyes, but I prefer the Everyday for personal use and that is usually my recommendation. You certainly won't be displeased with the C/P Sun, unless you get some clouds. The Sun Black is quite dark. If you're going the sun route, I would recommend the Sun Red!

@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 3 жыл бұрын
We're happy to help! The majority of Smith goggles come with a spare lens. The spare lens is normally to low-light option - in this case, that would be the Chromapop Storm lens, and the brighter light lens is the one normally displayed in the goggle image. For example, on the IO Mag (www.sportrx.com/smith-io-mag-snow-goggle-1.html), when you click on a goggle, you'll get the '[goggle color] - bright lens lens color + low light lens color'. On that goggle, you will find all except for two (black with CP Sun Red and black with CP Photo Rose Flash) come with the CP Storm Rose Flash. I recommend erring on the side of letting more light through with the CP Everday lens colors for the bright conditions lens.

That is a good question! What you are looking for is a heavily mirrored lens. You want to be able to see through the lens, of course, so what you need is a lens that others can't see through when looking at you. That means a bolder mirror and a darker lens. Your best bet would be one of Smith's 'Chromapop Sun' lenses. Bear in mind that this will mean a lens that is not as usable in cloudy, snowy conditions.

Skiing in proper nighttime conditions under fluorescent lighting calls for a clear lens or one with a light enough tint to allow more light to pass through the lens. The Rose Flash or Yellow works decently well at night provided the runs are sufficiently well-lit, but may still prove too dark for some riders.

Guys, i know it's years after you posted the video, but.. why would you present a lens with your black jacket behind it instead of using the snow as a backdrop so one can see the actual color?
@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 8 ай бұрын
Hi! Good question! It is because the front-on perspective does not accurately portray the contrast achieved when looking through the lens when worn on the face. Additionally, the camera does not pick up nuances in color separation that the eye does, so it's not the best example of what to expect when you actually get it on the face in proper snow conditions.

Hi, when you look through the lenses, is there a tint in colour? Like a reddish tint or something?

Hello Angela! It will normally be a rose base. This base color helps to boost the contrast so you can pick up on all of the details around you on the mountain. Thanks for reaching out!

what is the best goggle to fit my large frame (ray ban original wayfarer) glasses in?
@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Paul! Your best bet is to use a prescription insert! You can learn more about how it works here: www.sportrx.com/blog/prescription-goggle-inserts-over-otg-goggles/ Using an insert is better than any OTG option because you don't have to worry about breaking/losing your glasses if you wipeout, it won't fog up, and it is way more comfortable than wearing glasses under your goggles!

Hi there, i just followed your guide and based on the VLT i would say a combination of ChromaPop Photochromic Rose Flash (30-50%) and sunblack. Is it a good choice or do i miss something with the everyday lense compared to ChromaPop Storm Rose Flash (50%)? I mean, they both are 50%.
@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Peter! Some people do not like photochromic (transition) lenses because they do not change quickly enough when you are going in and out of shadows. An everyday lens with a VLT around 25% will get you by in cloudy conditions and still serve you well if the sun is out. Having the blackout lens is even better for super bright and sunny days since it lets less light through the lens. Hope this helps!

Follow up questions: what’s the difference between the photochromic rose flash at 50% and the storm rose flash? Does the storm lens boost more contrast or is it just the naming? I tend to ski in any conditions (whiteout, whiteout at night, night skiing, etc). Thanks yalls guys and big ups to mr Anderson’s facial expressions!
@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! The photochromic rose flash has more of a range of conditions it can be used in since it lets in about 20% less light in sunnier conditions. The lens gets brighter or darker depending on the amount of light present. On a sunny day it will change to 30% VLT and in overcast/snowy conditions it would be around 50% VLT. Some people prefer a transition lens because they do not like swapping lenses out. Others prefer having two sets for the most optimal performance in a given condition. Hope this clears things up!

SportRx I understand the VLT transitions from 50% to 30%, which is appealing, but when it’s at 50% is it different than the storm rose lens? So I’m skiing with friends in white out conditions, i have the photochromic lens and my friend has the storm rose lens, what lens (in theory) would perform better? Thanks again for the reply!
@sportrxeyewear

Hello! The lenses will perform the same because you have the same amount of light coming through the lens and they both give you great contrast with Chromapop lens technology. Thanks for reaching out!

Hello Dave! There are low light lenses that are more favorable for night riding like the Rose Flash or Yellow Flash. However, if you want one lens to get you by in a variety of conditions you can always check out the photchromic rose flash. This lens changes with lighting conditions so at night it will let more light in through the goggles. Thanks for reaching out!

@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 6 жыл бұрын
Hello K Terry! PRIZM and Chromapop are both contrast enhancing lens technologies. Ultimately it depends on the conditions you will be riding in. Both brands offer lenses that are ideal for overcast days as well as blue bird days. Since both brands offer quality lenses that boost contrast in a variety of conditions, there is no right or wrong choice. If you have more specific questions about either lens technology you can reach us at (888) 831-5817. Thanks for commenting!

I need to warrant my goggles, and thinking about going for the photochromatic rose instead of everyday green. Living in the NE, it's usually cloudier than not, so I feel that's a decent decision to make. Unfortunately, their website doesn't show what the 2nd lens would be either. How do you feel about the decision to go for photochromatic rose instead of everyday green?

You're comparing two top-tier lens techs, that's such a tough question to answer! For starters, you will be happy either way, we can say that with confidence. Beyond that, it is valuable to know that Prizm is a rose tint, so if that doesn't work for you, then you can avoid it. I was wondering, how do the chromapop lenses compare to the Oakley Prizm Rose and Hi Pink lenses?
@sportrxeyewear
@sportrxeyewear 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! Both Chromapop and PRIZM are great contrast-enhancing lens technologies that will give you the ability to pick up on all the details out on the slopes. PRIZM HI-Pink has a VLT of 35-40% and Rose has a VLT of about 25-28%. Comparing that to Smith Storm Yellow Flash with a VLT of 65% and Storm Rose Flash 50%. If you are looking for an ultra-lowlight lens, any of the lenses would be great but the Smith lenses will let more light in through the lens. *VLT(visible light transmission) is the measure of the amount of light that passes through the lens to your eyes. Hope this helps!

you could have took video thru the different lenses to show how different they are. Saying it is green but really looks rose isn't really a good example. there are infanant grades of colors. Until you see them, you have no way of determining which will work for you. And Smith doesn't have any of these at dealer stores to see in person. please just put your camera up to the lens and take some footage thru the lens. I learned nothing from this video review. Until you are able to see color you are not able to describe it accurately.
