been doing this exercise for a few months now and have noticed a strain in both my elbows. Upon reviewing and freezing this video at the apex of the movement, I notice the wrists are below the elbows. Seems like a DB high row offers a better "3-D" effect by raising the dumb bells up and then back; allowing the wrists to wind up being above the elbows. Doubt Dr. Stoppani will respond to this post, but I think a DB high row is more effective than than either a traditional BB or Smith Machine upright row.

I tried this exercise after many years and several weeks of using the barbell; I find it really uncomfortable as you basically have to stay very close to the bar since it doesn't allow an arking motion like a bar. It doesn't allow you to go to high up with a medium grip either

So i should have a wider grip on the cable upright row as well then? I've been following your Short cut to size program now and are on day 64 now, it looks great so far but been abit too slacky on those active rest days ..

I never feel anything bad doing upright rows does tht mean I can do them ?

i was also wondering does it matter if i do the smith machine squat instead of the barbel squat on leg day when doing your 12 weeks short cut to size program? i've never really squad so would it be better to do the smith machine or should i just do the regular barbell squat?

Does the wide grip target the traps as well?

What I can almost take away from this, is that if you don't have a gym and a smith machine and only free weights at home, avoid the upright row.

You can do dumbbell upright rows. Its a great exercise for delts. Just lean forward to avoid rowing with your traps and mimick the path that he showed here (dumbbells should be just under your armpits at flexion)

i've been following your shortcut to size im on phase 2 i noticed that there is no lower chest involvement up until this point..should i sprinkle it in on chest days

This is a terrible exercise regardless of grip. It puts your arms in the same vulnerable position as a physical therapist would put to see if there is impingement. Terrible terrible exercise. Follow athlean X for legitimate advice
