I disagree with the gripes both big and small. I actually like the checkering on the rear of the grip. It assures you have a good grip even if your hand is a bit sweaty. I live in the south east, and firing in the hot sun most of the time brings sweaty hands. That checkering does it's job. Another point to that gripe is that this is labeled as a Self Defense gun, not a range gun. And in a self defense situation, you don't want anything interfering with your ability to hold onto the weapon. As for the trigger, I'm starting to think that people just complain about this trigger because other notable people have complained about it, and that gives them some kind of reputational points. AGAIN I want to remind everyone that this is a Self Defense weapon, with no safety. It's supposed to be a longer heavier trigger, to avoid accidental fires. Spending money and adjusting the gun to you, instead of putting in the practice and adjusting to the weapon is the wrong path. Getting used to this trigger is not a hard thing to do, but it does require a little effort. Putting a lighter shorter trigger on this weapon as so many have done with the Apex replacement, in my opinion is shallow thinking and not a smart thing to do. With a little polishing of the internal pieces, and some lube on the trigger mechanisms, this trigger becomes buttery smooth after a few hundred rounds through it. I own the SD9, and it's a reliable and affordable weapon, that punches well above its weight. Other than that, good vid.

I agree with you 1000 percent learn the trigger!!! It does get smoother over time. I have fed mine everything without a single malfunction of any kind. I used some aerosol teflon on the trigger and it went from 8 to 7.5lb pull in a few seconds.I shoot a lot of aluminum and the SD9VE shoots it well. I prefer the grip of the old Sigma over the SD9VE. Just my .02 cents.

Grew job folks. The SD9VE is a great “defense” firearm. I got one in 9mm and one in 40 S&W. It’s a firearm you will not have a many AD’s with which makes it a good defense firearm. It’s a firearm you can put in the nightstand and when needed use it to protect your family. It’s not target firearm nor do I think Smith and Wesson wanted to be. It’s a firearm for the common man. 👍👍👍👍👍

Awesome comment!!! I agree 💯. However, I like to "tinker". IMO, this has at least one added benefit. I don't have to depend on this as a primary or only defensive option. This does have some after market support. I'm sure everyone can see where I'm going with this. I reiterate, these are great out of the box and require no mods!!! I happen to think they're also good candidates for modification. Don't let desires replace needs.

Through the 80s, 90s, and mid 20-teens I was a 1911 guy. I bought three of the SDVEs (two 9s and one 40) in 2014 and gave one to my daughter for college graduation. I paid 279 each. I did all the trigger and spring mods on mine. They're a great value. I'm a P320, micro-9 and mostly a revolver guy now, but a SDVE with a TLR1-HL still lives in the nightstand (in a locked case, there's frequently a highly mobile fast-moving 2.5 year old at the house).

I’ve had 5000+ rounds passed through it. Fits great in my large hand, sights are very easy to use, triggering is very reliable. I like it better than my Glock 17 or 19 or baby Glock. I love the reliability. After 1000 rounds of mixed ammo, it ate everything, no failures. The trigger is excessively heavy for my taste, it consistently hits left, even from a bench, and one of magazines never locks the slide back. However, for the price it’s well worth it.
@absentinsomniac4 жыл бұрын
Why not adjust the sight? I actually replaced the rear sight for like 8$ with the M&P rear sight, measured with a caliper to make sure it was centered. Also replaced the trigger with an APEX trigger + spring kit. Just put it in a vice with some towels or whatever to prevent scratching, buy a 24$ punch set off amazon (to prevent scratching), and punch the rear sight a little in whatever direction to adjust it. Using a caliper to center it can help if you have one. The trigger kit was a little tricky but only took me like half a day or a day to finish. Or you could have a gunsmith do it pretty easily. Added some talon grips, and now I'm hitting way easier with it. Feels like a whole new gun, haven't noticed any change in reliability.

When I first went looking for a 9mm pistol the SD9VE was the first I tried. The trigger was heavy but Apex Tactical can fix that. M&P sights will fit it. I have a cz po7 as well along with a kahr cw9 and the s&w has never failed to fire, stove piped, failed to chamber a round or any other malfunction where the other two have. The sd9ve came with a crimson trace 200 lumen mounted light for $279.00 from academy sports, a person can't beat that price for the quality. I keep it in a drawer near the bed and occasionally get it out to do a little plinking. I'd rather spend $300 on the gun and $200 on ammo than $5-600 on just the gun when the $300 gun is just as reliable.

The Smth SVE is a contemporary of the Ruger P95... Both were reliable, tough, accurate, easily concealed, and (eventually) low in price... The result is that they make the perfect 'stash' gun, with which to defend home, auto, family, whatever, in a SHTF scenario-- which happens more often than one might think.

I had to file down the grips as well, after 50 or 60 rounds, my hand was getting pretty sore. For the life of me, I could not zero the sights, even at 10 yards. Upgraded the trigger with the apex spring kit, WAY better. 2" groupings at 15 yards, improved even more after I put a cheap laser on it. Its a great gun, just wish it had a manual safety...

I own a SD9VE and have installed the Apex trigger kit. I highly recommend the kit. I purchased ithe weapon about four years ago. In spite of the fact that I've shot firearms for more than 40 years, this was my very first pistol (I was always a rifle/shotgun guy). At this point, I have roughly 5000 rounds through it, and I'm still a terrible shot. On the other hand, my brother can shoot my SD9Ve better than he can shoot his own Glock 19. He used to be a competitive shooter. He was regularly ringing an 8" steel plate offhand with my weapon at 75 yards (80% + of the time).
@hartsickdisciple3 жыл бұрын
To the people saying the gun isn't accurate- The SD9 and SD40 are tack-drivers, once you figure out the right grip and master the trigger. It took me awhile with my SD40, but I eventually figured out that the issue wasn't the gun, but me. I installed the Apex trigger/spring kit, which made the trigger substantially nicer. That helped my accuracy in a big way, but also proved that the gun wasn't the issue. When I do my job with proper grip and trigger pull, it's very accurate out to 15-20 yards. I'm talking 2-3 inch groups. If you're shooting with 2 hands, make sure your support hand grip is very snug, especially your thumb. Don't be afraid to put it high on the slide. Use a lot of pinky for your shooting hand grip.

It's a no frills get the job done weapon. It's job is in its name and it's name isn't optimal plinker 9 ve. If you need to pull a trigger in defence i doubt anyone will stop to complain about a trigger... You wouldnt notice it. It costs 300 and under, runs any round without fail, is easily concealed, light weight, easy to hold secure with sweaty scared hands, it's drop safe to perfection, m&p sights fit it btw, its visually appealing,and has high capacity magazines..... It has 0 contenders once you factor those facts together in my opinion for 300 and under.... Side note... I was in a wreck where a tornado actually threw me off the road and down a 50 foot embankment flipping end over. The weapon was in my glove box loaded in my iwb holster. ( I know i know but had good reason youtube doesn't need to hear) anyway weapon was found 50 yards away from truck the mag did come loose and weapon was found in water hours later with a live round still in it. Wasn't able to clean it for 3 weeks. Field stripped it cleaned assembled and its ate around 2k rounds since with 0 issues. Still retains mag n all. Love it for 300. I'd pay up to 4 maybe 450 but can't cuz they have other weapons at that price point with more frills. Nice video btw.

So, I have this in the .40 cal version. Yes it eats what ever you feed it. The heavy trigger pull has an easier and cheaper fix than buying the Apex kit. Trigger drills, a lot of trigger drills, this will wear it in very well. Pull weight now feels comparable to my Gen 1 M&P 9 full size. I have bought the Apex kit and tried it, for me it makes the trigger too light. The replacement trigger however helps the feel and moves the breaking point forward, imo. Installed the trigger kit to try and combat the low and left shots. For me the fix was to increase grip pressure. Grip texture was not a problem but evidently the weapon does shift in my hands. Looking at either a grip sleeve or Talon grips. YMMV.
@GB-zi6qr Жыл бұрын
So the cost of purchasing these pistols has finally come back down and I wanted to reacquaint myself with them. Thus I had to revisit this video. So update. I have installed the Talon Grips rubberized version of their grip tape. Immediate improvement!!! I do consider this model a good, inexpensive firearm. What have I learned after having the .40 cal version? They do work. Yes, you will probably have to put in some practice to get the most from it. I don't think this model is forgiving of poor shooting techniques for distances beyond 7yrds. Example: I like to shoot pistols at 20 yards. I had little trouble connecting with my M&P. My SD40VE showed me where my technique was lacking. Thus, now I have no trouble connecting with my M&P. I believe this is a solid product as is. No modifications needed. However, if you have other defensive options. Should you be the type that wants to tinker, this might be a good candidate. There is after market support. While I may very well pursue this course, I DO NOT recommend this. I have other options and will not be dependent on this as my primary. As previously stated, I've already "tinkered" with my SD40VE, so I'll probably "tinker" with this one also. GB, I really like your review and thus had to resurrect it. Hopefully more people will see it. 😎

Upgrade your guide rod spring a little less recoil, the upgraded slide lever lock makes take down so much easier and the apex trigger upgrade makes a much lighter trigger pull. I just didn't care for the gun. Trigger was the main thing I just hated. As your test show it would work well all ammo. But the follow up shot was horrible.....that trigger. Good video ...thanks

Great reliability. Inexpensive or not a defensive gun should at least be that. Besides this gun is 500 bucks in California, so it isn't so cheap.

It was $250 on the free states until S&W seems to have raised the price

Great review and thank you!! I have shot this gun and it's ok but would definitely upgrade the trigger cuz it is not pleasant at the range at all!! Fix it S&W and you will sell 10 times as many!👍🇺🇸

Fresh Fowler what should they do to the trigger?

I wonder if they don't incorporate Apex triggers as standard for legal purposes. If they sell them with good light triggers lawyers could try to use it against them in court. If someone puts an Apex trigger kit in one it shifts any accusations of a light trigger causing a problem to the owner of the pistol for the modification rather than the manufacturer.

Craig Arnold good point. Some want a heavy trigger because this fun doesn’t have a safety. I don’t like safeties for personal protection and I definitely don’t want to shoot myself or someone accidentally

Definite trigger replacement. When a trigger is too heavy, you will pull shots and be worse off in high stress situations where you need to be fast and accurate. A 4lb to 5lb trigger is all you need high stress to range shooting and competition down to 3lb trigger pull target work. Ridiculous that this trigger is 8+ lbs pull by S&W. This formula has been known since 1940's.

Or you get training and develop trigger finger discipline. I've competed Front Sight as a Distinguished Graduate using a DA/SA, all it took was learning the trigger.

Cut two and a half coils off the sear spring. It helps with the trigger and it’s free. It’s not a beginner gun it’s a darn good high quality pistol. American made and shoots well. Go ahead and spend heaps of money of something else but I better none of you would want to volunteer to put a target on your t-shirt and take a ineffective round by a cheap pistol?

Not sure bad for a $320 dollar gun. I might pick one up one day as a truck/car gun. Lifetime warranty from S&W included.

I've got "double tap left or right to skip 10 seconds" top center on my phone. It's just appeared there, I've gone thru settings, I can change the amount it skips, just not get rid of it saying it. It popped up this morning, never seen it before, it's bugging the hell out of me. Anyone know how to get rid of it? I only watch KZbin on my phone, my kids have to be pryed away from the computers.

Yipyo1986 I can skip either way, it's an awesome feature, but having the written out instructions at the top middle was a pain in the ass. It was blocking out faces and other things. The writing has gone now, but I can still skip back and forth 10 seconds, no problem.

I cringed when she said the grip and the trigger was her big complaint, duh it has no safety and it’s for self defense hence SD. When someone’s attacking you or coming at you the extra pound of pressure on the trigger won’t mean a thing. The grip easy for your female hands just get a grip cover

Sounds like a perfect model unit for multiple locations in the home for defense. That won’t break the bank and above good quality and dependability with loaded full magazines/clips.!!!! Hehheheheh Does Glock do this? No. One model 600-700 dollar’s per unit. But feel free to correct me if I’m mistaken.

Not a budget gun in Ma where they made at!! Any who ha I got one and it’s not a very accurate gun further then 10yards!! Buy very reliable!! Pain in the ass to field strip so I got the extended break down lever for $12 and a steel guid rod for $13 since it comes with a plastic one!!! I also did a poor man on the sites and used neon green paint On front site and blacked out rear white dots and I can shoot a lot better now!!!

That stamp steel slide stop wasn't designed to be used to release the slide and have replaced a few on Glock pistols, besides your not using the full tension of the recoil spring which could result in a shooters induced malfunction, you also shouldn't allow the slide to slam shut on a empty chamber like your wife did you risk damaging the extractor. Only problem I had since 2014? Recoil guide rod warped after 145 rounds and replaced it with a metal one. Fired 2800 rounds since replacing my guide rod without any issues.
