4+ years later and this is about the best review I've seen of ANY firearm (I don't own an SD9VE but I see its now worth consideration for additional home defense). Methodical, concise, objective and his verbiage makes both an experienced and beginner better informed. I'm now a subscriber.

I have this gun, and believe it or not, it's my everyday carry, I have a Sig P320, Glock 19, just got a Ruger American in 9mm. I haven't changed the trigger on it, it's well broken in and after 1500 rounds it shoots like a champ, I have no accuracy issues, always center mass, groupings could be better of course but the gun works. I have a Blackhawk Serpa Holster for it, outside the waistband, winter, spring summer fall, and I open carry. I'm not trying to advertise, I'm just comfortable carrying it that way. I like this gun, it just works. I wanted to put the apex trigger in it but I've become accustomed to the trigger, i don't mind the heavy pull. At this point it only feels like its about 7 and a half pounds, I could be wrong but it doesn't bother me one bit. Mags can be expensive for it, but if you search, some places have deals on the sometimes, I got 6 recently for 70 bucks. All in all a great value.
@bobbyjames17146 жыл бұрын
Torin Rodriguez The Apex trigger brings it to a whole new level. I didn't realize how crappy the hinged trigger was until I tried a Apex. If you have a m&p or SD, get a Apex trigger, it's the best upgrade for the Smith's. I have two m&p's and a sd9ve, all of them have thier triggers.

My local Rural King here in Indiana sells 16 round factory mags for $28. I'm impressed with this gun also. U got the SD9 with black slide and FDE frame on sale for $279. I carry mine in the SERPPA holster too. Just picked up a Uncle Mike hip holster with the mag pouch on the front to use when I want to carry an extra mag. I also like the factory trigger. I believe it is way over bitched about.

I have one, too. I dropped in an Apex trigger, Galloway trigger spring set, extended take down lever, 21 lb SS recoil spring & rod, grip tape, and TruGlo sights. It's now one of my favorite shooters out of my small collection. For folks on a tight budget it's a very good option as they can do simple & affordable upgrades a little at a time while still enjoying it if they want. OEM trigger bites but sort of good for new shooters which is why S&W went that route (or so they claim). Mags go on sale sometimes too for as little as $12-$15 ea (I have 6 for mine)...and good quality mags. A very affordable and fun pistol to learn working on & shooting.
@Deviate094 жыл бұрын
I just picked one of these up as my first handgun and I was looking into the spring kits. I can't find one that's made by Galloway though I'm going to keep trying, but S&W apparently says replacing the polymer guide rod with a steel one tends to blow out the frame. Have you noticed any wear on yours? I would love to start doing upgrades on mine but I don't even know where to begin!

My dad has always been an old school revolver guy. He started speaking about getting a 9mm after shooting various ones I own. So found them in my usual gun shop and bought it for him. Shot well from the get go with all types of ammo. Various weights, steel and brass functioned well. A couple light primer hits but nothing to freak out about. This one shot slightly low. Filed down front sight to just about the top of the white dot and shot point of aim after that. The only significant issue was after about 500 +/- rounds taking it apart for cleaning the plastic head of the guide rod snapped off. Found a cheap steel one online and the gun has functioned extremely well since especially for the cost.
@shadowwolf76226 жыл бұрын
Which end snapped off? Mine seem to show wear fast. Smith told me not to use a metal rod. They said it would damage the frame. They did send me 2 New rods to replace the ones I sent them to examine. They said they all wear and not to worry about it.

@mickbowling44124 жыл бұрын
I used to own one but sold it. Not a bad gun by any means, but you can definitely tell it’s a budget gun. The trigger, the shiny cheap plastic frame, the flashing around the seams, the thinly stamped sheet metal slide release, etc. Nothing that effects the function of the gun, just some things I didn’t care for quality wise. I will say that for someone on a budget that just wants some self protection at a good price, it’s a good choice. However, if you look around hard enough, you can find better at around the same price. I bought an M&P 2.0 Compact for $299 from Sportsman’s Outdoor Superstore.

August 2020...new ones are $400 (honest pricing) to $500 (ripoff pricing); snagged a clean used one (2015 vintage) for $250 w/ original mags & 1 extra mag (sigma floorplate); added another mag for $33 (honest pricing); this will be my 4th one (traded or sold my prior ones); my accuracy with it is average with the stock trigger pull; it will fill a role as a home defense firearm with limited open carry during rallies/gatherings...

Buying one as my first gun at 25 years of age. Been a few years since I was shooting but I've wanted a handgun for about 5 years now, just had to wait for the right time. I looked at everything in the store and was just drawn to the SD9VE. I picked it and it picked me. It's gonna be about 475 total with tax but I put down 100 and put it on layaway for myself. Don't think I'll be disappointed in any way. Beautiful handgun

Although it's just cosmetic I see this one has a warped dust cover at the end around the slide and the frame. I have noticed that a bunch of these are that way! They should let the frame cool more before taking them out of the mold, i think that's what causes this warping and makes it sit to one side like that, it doesn't hurt anything but it looks cheap and crappy!

Did the military consider this pistol when choosing the Sig? It appears to be a great gun, American made and may have fewer problems then those being experienced by the Sig... Just curious. We own one of these and it’s a great gun for the money. At one time it was probably the best gun for the money, but I think the Creed and Canik tp9v2 are both better guns. Surprisingly the softest shooting gun I’ve ever shot with the exception of the Steyr M9. Looking forward to the range review!

No,the Ruger is better. You're Ruger probably has a rear adjustable sight.a heavier barrel so you can use +p or +p+ ammunition. And its probably a better quality gun. I have a SR9 & one of these SD9VE's. And the Ruger has a better trigger. After I bought the Ruger I hardly ever use this one. This is the gun I let my friends who don't have guns use.
@Thundarr9954 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that this gun has a loose rattle to it. I don't think it's a peice of crap. I think for about the same amount of money,you can get quite a bit better gun. It is reliable I've never had any problems with it. Mine seems to shoot low & to the left. My Buddy has the same gun,he bought it at the same time I bought mine. His seems to shoot high,higher tha mine does.It is what it is. It does the job. Would I buy it again...?probably not. It's got a lifetime warranty. If you start throwing aftermarket parts on it trying to make it better,it voids the warranty. Might as well just buy a more expensive gun to begin with if you're gonna do that.

I got a SD 9 FDE frame model for $279 a month ago at my local rural king. I put 50 rounds of mixed bullet styles and weights though it a couple weeks ago. It shot great and I was hitting dead on with it. I did notice when I cleaned it afterwards that the guide rod end that goes against the barrel lug already has a decent ding in it. You guys think this is normal wear? I'm not sure what I think about it. I put a New factory rod and spring in it. I ordered two extra for it from smith right after I bought it. I had heard they wore kinda fast sometimes. But damn, it should last more than 50 rounds. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet with the New one to see how it does. Its not a horrible spot but is noticeable. I might call a Smith and see what they have to say.

Good review man, I sometimes have trouble finding reviews that are detailed passed "it shoots good"

Thank you. My reviews are split between tabletops like this and shooting impressions which are in a separate video. Articles, if related, are either linked in the video description or a pinned comment.

Guns are more expensive right now thats why this gun a year ago would have cost way less

Yup, and another reason why I try not to quote prices in videos. Prices change, the video does not

It's not a peice of junk. But if you buy it, in a month you'll probably wish you just saved up a little more money and bought a better gun. My friend bought one,that was his first gun. After he bought it he watched a bunch of KZbin videos. He thought that the plastic guide rod was a bad thing,so he put a stainless steel guide rod in it. Then he decided to get the Apex trigger. We went shooting up in the foot hills ,about a year ago. The frame on his gun cracked. I own one too. Mine has probably 3k rounds through it. I never modded mine. My opinion. If you're gonna use it for home defense just leave it as it is. If you want a range toy or you want to shoot hot loads.....buy a better gun.

Great video and presentation and is a builder pistol being that you have to upgrade it over time i.e. better trigger, sights, etc if you want to make it a better pistol. Its impressive, but if you go to some stores they tell you to carry it on an empty chamber since there's not safety.
@Procraseighter5 жыл бұрын
Anyone telling you to carry on an empty chamber is a fool. Most defensive guns do not have safeties on them, and are intended to be carried with a round chambered. You wouldn't put on a seatbelt right when you're having a wreck would you? Would you wait to put on an oven mitt until after you have grabbed a hot pan? If your answer to those is no, then why would you wait until you need to use your gun to try to chamber a round? It's too late by then!

I am looking at this glock 19 and bersa 380. I got small hands but I see this gun might be a good fit. Any suggestions
@GBGuns3 жыл бұрын
With smaller hands any of those options will do. This or the Bersa will be the least expensive.
