And make Slam physical. Does not make much sense that slam would be special, there is no nostalgia to dragon type moves being special as there were no dragon moves that this would have applied to (Dragon Rage being only former dragon move) and Dragonite should be mythically strong given its rarity in the game (only Lance has one)

11:25 I have a suggestion: Have the Ponyta and Rapidash line learn Jump Kick and High Jump Kick in order to further differentiate it from the other fire type animal themes. It would make sense with how horses behave in real life, and would open up the possibility of a more phisically oriented fire pokemon.
@BelugaTheHutt
@BelugaTheHutt 10 ай бұрын
Jump Kick makes sense, because Sawsbuck learns in pre-dexit, and it has a similar body shape to Rapidash - similarly, Dodrio also learns Jump Kick. However, Hi Jump Kick wouldn't make tons of sense, because HJK is actually a knee kick, and the English localization doesn't sufficiently get that idea across. Jump Kick is translated from "drop kick", whereas Hi Jump Kick is translated from "flying knee kick". You know the famous art of Blaziken sticking its knee out while jumping? That's the intended idea behind HJK. This is reinforced by its depiction in the anime. If you're not familiar with that Blaziken artwork, an even more famous example of a flying knee kick is the famous "Knee of Justice" forward aerial of Captain Falcon in the Smashbros series. Most 4-legged mammals, such as the horses on which Ponyta and Rapidash are designed, don't have legs with prominating knees. Their knees are relatively higher up on their legs, and instead, it is the ankle joint which prominates, and which serves as their primary bending axis. This means that it doesn't make a lot of biomechanical sense to give HJK to a 4-legged mammal pokemon, and we can see from vanilla learnsets in the series that HJK is in fact reserved exclusively for bipedal mons.

@mapleunix1
@mapleunix1 10 ай бұрын
@@LotoTheHero That's true, but precisely due to that I think it would give it a usability factor that other fire types don't have precisely due to their rock weakness. Jump Kick isn't particularly strong anyways and it wouldn't be stab, so I think it generally wouldn't be sweeping rock or normal teams anyways. Also, if I'm not mistaken, most rock types are also ground, right? So if anything it's just giving an extra tool to deal with those weaknesses. I could be wrong though lol Edit: I'm not considering High Jump Kick anymore due to the previous reply to my comment.

@@mapleunix1A good rule of thumb, check the Japanese name of a move and its meaning before theory crafting. Headlong Rush made no sense to me as a punching move and I even thought it was a glitch until I saw the Japanese name and explanation behind it: it's the opening move you see in sumo matches. It's why Hariyama gets it and it's unlikely to be given to frail/light looking mons any time soon.

It’s not that it has bad power and a drawback, it’s that it’s another middling Fighting-type move in a game where you don’t want to use Fighting moves plus Fighting-type Pokemon are weak and so Submission takes them out even quicker. Furthermore, even the developers think Submission a mistake - outside of other wrestling Pokémon like Hawlucha and Obstagoon, Submission is basically forgotten. For some reason, Cyndaquil, Chimchar, and Drilbur can learn it by breeding, and there is a Totodile that can be gifted that move, but in this day and age Submission would only be good if there was a Rock Head Pokemon that got Submission. Guess what? No Pokemon that learns Submission knows Rock Head, so literally every Pokémon will take damage from it. Finally, to make it clear that it was probably thrown in in Gen 1 because of the wrestling Machop line, Submission is not usable in Gen 9, while Doublr Edge is usable in Gen 9. Even as far as resistances go, Submission is resisted by Psychic, Poison, Bug, Flying (and Fairy types). Guess what? Most Pokémon in Kanto are Psychic, Poison, Flying, or Bug types! Meanwhile you have only three lines resisted by Normal type. And in later generations, many Pokémon would have a move that suffices more than the recoiling Submission. Submission was basically a mistake for the 20 years it was available as a move.

RAZOR WIND POSSIBLY sounds like a better suggestion as a DRAGON TYPE ATTACK. You could make it a base 60 Attack with a high crit ratio OR give it the Solarbeam treatment with the charge up turn valuing it to a base 180 Attack. No Pokemon has EVER really used this move via level up or TM use. Since Dragonite is a DRAGON OF THE SKY, it should be EXCLUSIVE to it via evolution or Level 60; In addition it would be fitting that it be paying homage to your Crystal Legacy team selection for Lance. I'd be okay with Special Slam if Dragonair were buffed to have a Special stat near or at the level of Dragonite's, so as to be a viable pre-evo for the long stretch of time until level 55. No need to buff its other stats, maybe even trade off some of its Attack stat to compensate and apply the distribution change back to Dratini as well. Maybe like 54 or 44 Attack/60 or 65 Special Dratini, and then 74 or 64 Attack/90 or 95 or even 100 Special Dragonair? Give a different niche between the pure Dragon type and its Dragon/Flying evolution. It's also a more comprehensive buff to Lance if he keeps even just one Dragonair on his team. Which he probably should just to avoid the 4x Ice weakness. (Yes, other than making Hyper Beam weaker on them, but the gains to bulk and all other moves would more than make up for that, given everything super effective against them would be Special in this scenario over changing Dragon type to physical, which would just make Dragonair and Dragonite easier to kill with other Pokemon that learn Slam.)

The problem of boosting Pikachu stats and badges boosts os that it also messes with other pikachus and your other mons. Honestly I think a good route was only changing pikachu Exp group to fast group, exp group are an usually overlooked trait that really helps balance a mon (for single plays) since levels are also taken into damage formula. For movepool I would give it Double Kick, Surf and Fly because these are the moves Pikachu uses during the game intro (and was part of the original plan for Yellow before they put HM chus behind events)

And tri attack features the only other thing it's weak too and both other types fire and electric are already associated with dragons. There's an ice dragon in the Next Godzilla movie too. So The callback to using it's own weakness for offense in the ice portion of the attack would have been chef's kiss. Dragon's landing a freeze on you after they survive your pitiful ice beam would be disgusting and absolutely on point. Like dang. Slam is good but Tri Attack is such a dragon move.

I'm still in favour of removing poison typing from Gastly and Haunter. My reasoning is that, while it isn't the only type that lacks a solo type example, the others at least have multiple combinations (ie. no pure flying but you have normal/flying, fire/flying, ice/flying, etc). Second, types can be thought of as being descriptive of what they are or what they control. The Gastly line are ghosts but its less clear that they control poison as they learn no poison moves via leveling. Thirdly, ghosts are supposed to be a counter to psychic types which is undermined by the poison typing. Finally, the reason Gengar should keep his poison typing is for balance reasons as he is a monster with it and would gain too much power by not being tied to it.

Pokemon’s base stats don’t work the way you described while talking about badge boosts. The 12.5% boost applies to the Pokémon’s actual stats, not their base stats. These are two different things because the base stat is just one of several factors that are plugged into a more complex formula to determine the stats of an individual Pokemon. Badge boosting Pikachu’s attack stat by 25% would boost the attack stat that actually goes into the damage formula, but the base stat stays the same. It’s not equivalent to a base stat of 69, or any number for that matter, because each Pikachu will have different stat experience and DVs

While I'm not advocating for bashing Gen 1 development, it was basically the wild west before professional standards were established, but technically speaking: Japanese Red and Green were their first shot, then Japanese Blue was their second shot, then Red and Blue were their third shot, leaving Yellow as their 4th shot at the very least, 5th shot for the international release of Yellow, since there were still changes and bug fixes. Just, every fix of the time was adding additional bubblegum and duct tape over top the previous layer to make each iteration run a bit better without actually fixing the underlying issues. (There's a good reason Gen 2 and Gen 3 weren't able to interact with each other, just too many built up messy coding decisions. Not that Gen 3 was perfect, but it was a much more stable foundation.) What's not excusable is that's still the design philosophy nearly 30 years later. So much easily avoidable spaghetti code, if only the release cycle respected reasonable development needs.

Go all the way with Solarbeam and make it 190-200 BP - as flashy (heh) as it is with 180 power, it's still worse than just using Razor Leaf since you can switch around it. With 190-200 BP, it's much more oppressive and is basically a rapidly ticking time bomb - you can switch your resist in but it's still gonna hurt, and suddenly it's scarier than Razor Leaf was. If you're worried about it being too strong, maybe see if the broken Focus Energy code can be applied to make Solarbeam never crit. Also, just make Transform a priority move and you don't need to do ANYTHING else to make Ditto interesting.

I know it's inevitable that some pokemon will see less usage than others, but I feel like Hitmonlee has really no use case with these changes. Hitmonchan has a better moveset, and with the special buff it's a fair amount tankier as well. Hitmonlee doesn't learn any special moves, so I'd suggest maybe buffing its special further as you would only effectively be buffing special defense in this case. Perhaps these two could use a bit further tweaking so that they are both useful and one doesn't completely outshine the other. Just a thought.

You wanted to have Flamethrower as a TM, to help out the fire types like Moltres who, outside of a single pokemon being able to use the Fire Blast TM until post game when it's repurchasable, are stuck with only Ember or Fire Spin. Have you figured out which TM you wanted to replace to put it in yet? Also, have you considered moving TM's around for balancing reasons? Popular ones like Body Slam and Ice Beam should stay where they are, though. But for example: Submission is all the way at the end in Victory Road. Kind of late for a move like that. What if that was moved to the rocket hideout where horn drill was? You start to face fighting types around then and it will help against giovanni's rock and normal type. Horn drill is bought in the celadon department store for cheap so it can stay there. And to replace submission in victory road, maybe substitute since that's locked behind the game corner and is hard to get normally, and substitute is a more advanced kind of move anyway for higher level play, so it fits in victory road. Another example is: Rage is all the way next to Fuschia city, and its usefulness is about done by that point. Maybe moving Rage to the beginning of Mt Moon where Water Gun was to teach the player that it can be used for long dungeons, and water gun is now Flamethrower at the route east of fuschia where rage was, since thats where someone pokemon start to learn Flamethrower, and it makes it available early for others if you don't want to wait for later levels. to learn it. Would moving around lesser known TM's around to when the moves are more appropriate or make sense be a good idea?

@@NihlusKryik Yeah and it was way overpowered in testing at 20 base power so it was nerfed to 10 to not give an outright curb stomp fight. It will still win, generally speaking, but it won't be straight one hit both mons.

There’s a very easy buff you can do for Ditto. Buff it’s speed so it’s the fastest mon in the game so it can at least have a bootleg version of Imposter in gen 1. Sure Ditto will have a super high crit rate as a Ditto, but it will take the transformed pokemon’s crit rate, so it’d only be useful for struggle strats. This way you won’t buff transform itself via giving it priority, unless you really want to give more PP to the transformed moves, but I think the bootleg imposter effect with the speed buff could be good enough.

Highest Speed + Flinches the opponent when you use it. Also give the move priority so it beats out other quick attacks. The only real way to make “imposter”

@ulegnaa That is true and was in the back of my mind. Could remove it from Mew’s learnset. Could also rename a buffed Transform as "Imposter" and then convert one of the Conversion moves to Transform and hand it out to Mew and a few other pokemon

While I’m liking you adding a proper dragon move, making Slam into Dragon just doesn’t sit right as it’s just… slam. Why didn’t you just do the nightshade treatment but for dragon rage and turn it into a 80 special move?

Same reason why Bite is changed from Normal to Dark in the original Gen 2 games. I'm fine with that or just Dragon Rage being 80BP too though tbh

For Pokemon's stats, I personally think that it would be cool to change a Pokemon's Special stat to whichever number is higher in gen 2 i.e. Changing Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan's Special from 35 (which are their current Special Attacks) to 110 (which are their current Special Defenses). Also, giving all the Pokemon that got little stat boosts in later gens, like Pidgeot gaining ten points in speed, those boosts. As for moves, as a lot them got buffs in later gens, I think that it would be nice for them to gain those buffs in this game.

I don't agree with allowing stone evolutions to learn their pre-evo move set. That was a balancing mechanic in gen 1. You couldn't catch a pokemon and immediately make it stronger without the trade off of locking their moves. Otherwise, why even have the pre-evo stage? They could have just let Eevee be the only stone evo pokemon.
@NA1c158
@NA1c158 10 ай бұрын
Their evolutions and prior had too many flaws for it to be properly balanced in the first place. He's fixing the issue by removing that mechanic in the first place and focusing on streamlining the game experience of a nearly 30 year old game. Trust me, no one will protest this specific change.

I like the extanded philosophy of what the nidos already had. When they evolve that have most of the learnset but if you hold off several levels you can a extra valuable move like dig without needing tms

@juicebox90000 I suppose it doesn't really matter as these are hypothetical fixes to a 30 year old game, but if there is no downside to using a stone right away, why not just ditch the 1st stage altogether?
@NA1c158
@NA1c158 10 ай бұрын
Same moves, except for one coveted move only on an earlier version. The balance could be exemplified further if the learnset was raised on the the fully evolved by 5 or so levels for each successive move, thereby giving you a reason to hold off on evolution that do4esn't lock you out of the moves, instead it makes learning them take longer.@@WiGgYof09

It would be nice if there was a better Bug Move as a finisher/sweeper though. Twineedle at combined 80 power is cute and all, but considering the deep move pool available to every other type, and how broken Flamethrower is at 95 BP plus burn, Sludge at 90 BP plus Poison, or Thunderbolt at 95 BP plus paralysis, or 95 BP Ice Beam with chance to freeze, I don't really see why Bug would have to be so hard gated. Especially considering how squishy Bug Pokémon are.
@Shalakor
@Shalakor 10 ай бұрын
It should be remembered that Bug is a Physical Type where most of those you mention are Special Types, and Poison doesn't have very good offensive coverage. The pokemon Bug Type moves are good at dealing with tend to have MUCH lower Defense stat than their Special stat, even a good number of the ones they do neutral damage to instead of just when being super effective.

I honestly think that another solution would be to add a mechanic that adds extra points to Pikachu's stats based on happiness. So at max happiness, it would have a +51 x Level% extra stat point in every stat. (I got this by dividing 255 among HP, Attack, Defense, Speed and Special)

Other changes I can see is reclassifying Dodrio as Fighting/Flying, Ninetales as Fire/Ghost and Seadra as Water/Dragon. Having a repeatable way of getting TMs would also be nice. I also can also see Razor Wind being reclassified as an early game Dragon type move that functions similarly to Twister; a 40-60 BP Dragon move with a 10-30% chance to flinch. It would at least give some use to it.

If I could make a suggestion, for the Poli line, move Karate Chop to the mid-thirties and put low-kick in at the upper twenties. Poliwag doesn't evolve to Poliwhirl until 25, so putting a level-up for Poliwrath there doesn't make much sense (unless Poliwhirl also learns the move at the same level).
