That flight attendant could have closed the door.
@May-kg7yp5 жыл бұрын
Or she could have just NOT opened the door and called through the cabin phone and told the pilots of the danger. That is what should have been done since it is the proper procedure in the event of an emergency AND should have been learned in-training. Then the pilots could contact ATC and be landed immediately to the closest destination, and police would be ready to detain the shooter. The door to the cockpit is locked very securely to prevent access of possible dangers to reach the pilots so they can still fly the plane... (a feature that was considered a necessity after 9/11) Even then, none of the passengers tried to land/fly the plane or fight the guy, which could have saved their lives since there’s an auto-land option (kind of like auto-pilot). Auto-land is used when it’s foggy out and pilots can’t see.

Aarow Thomas seriously?
@-caesarian-60786 жыл бұрын
joosii / Yup, it’s also important to remember that this happened in 1987, when 1. Hijackers never crashed the plane, they just forced the pilots to land at the nearest airport, then held the passengers hostage for ransom (think DB Cooper) 2. Hijackers just didn’t target smaller planes, if they want a ransom, they get more money for more hostages 3. Hijackings in general were super rare and not really considered a problem. 4. The space between the galley and the cockpit was so small, a door would be difficult to fit.
@arturcernonog99156 жыл бұрын
Aarow Thomas, my dad used to be a commercial pilot in the soviet union and it was very strict that pilots and crew knew how to respond to a hijacking, they would even have a combat tokarev locked away in case of a hijacking and the pilots were rigorously trained to be able to neutralise the hijackers.

I'm a Brit, but feel like asking if u r Brits too, given such understatement! Yes, I know ur being ironic. But we should not underestimate the danger created by disturbed people, even though most with mental illnesses never cause such issues, and are abused and oppressed by so-called 'normal' people, more than vice versa. But whilst we generally spend too long picking on the non-dangerous unwell, we tend to downplay the warning signs of those who are a danger. Any actual threats or violence in the context of mental illness (or even in those with no obvious mental health issues), should be reported. The majority of mass murders, of all kinds, are usually hinted at prior by the perpetrator. Certainly not all threats will result in the threats being carried out, but should be reported for assessment anyway.

@@coreyjfox he had a revolver they saw that. The gunshots are louder than the plane. Now revolvers typically hold 6 bullets. 5 shots equals 1 bullet left. That's very common knowledge atleast 1 person would've realised. Plus the passengers were stupid to not try. I know there's not as much autopilot back then as there is now but still they had 2 minutes to tackle the guy and pull the plane up. No one tried from what this tells us.

Due to him still having his Airline ID, he was able to bypass normal security checks, which was a thing at that time. Therefore, he was able to simply hide the gun on his person since he knew he wouldn't be checked. After this incident, I believe that the NTSB required all passengers on planes, including employees, to pass through security checks.

Maybe to you it's not, but the human mind's response to most things depressing and such is to try to make it more lighthearted, and also, let's face it, the lines from the actors/actress were golden.

Shouldn't there be a system in place where the plane converts to autopilot if no one is controlling it? Or at least where a plane can be taken control of remotely, by a control tower?

A college roommate of my brother was an EMT in the area when this happened. The spread of the wreckage so large, the authorities pulled in every emergency worker near by, to help pick up pieces of airplane and passenger. The plane hit so hard, and almost vertically, it piled into the ground and 'blew' back out across the countryside. The largest piece of anything was about a half of an airline seat back, with about half of someone's back still attached to it. He said the jet fuel fumes were so bad each team had to rotate out of the area every few minutes. The gallows humor of that kind of experience led to them singing a parody of a Disney song, from a Donald Duck cartoon, where Donald has the bears help him pick up litter in a National Park. My brother's friend said at one point they sang, "Pick a piece of body up, put it in the bag...Bomp Bomp..." over and over.
