A British submarine on a mission to deliver supplies to Norwegian resistance fighters spots an unsuspecting enemy submarine in 1944. It's simply too good an opportunity to pass up.

What is more impressive about Jimmy Launders is the fact that subsequent to the sinking of U771, he sank U864 as part of Operation Ceasar. Launders, still in command of HMS Venturer, stalked a Type IX (U864) which was on a secret mission ferrying supplies and plans to Japan. What is truly incredible is that Launders detected U864 whilst it was submerged, and U864 detected HMS Venturer whilst it was submerged. The U boat took evasive manoeuvres, but Launders continued to stalk U864. Launders calculated U864's position, course and speed and fired 4 torpedoes, one of which hit U864 which sank with all hands. It is the only time one submarine has sunk another submarine whilst both were submerged. Launders mathematical calculations were very complex, but mathematics was a hobby of his. An amazing man who survived the war and continued to serve the Royal Navy into the 1980s. He passed away in 1988. I came across his medal ribbons here in Australia after his wife, Olive, passed away in 2010. I have tried to investigate Launders further, and even investigated him further when on holiday in the UK. I was met with indifference after making inquiries with the Royal Navy and the Imperial War Museum. Such a shame, as this man was incredible.

No real elation from the attacking submariners. They are just relieved that they were not spotted and torpedoed the U boat before it saw them and attacked. I suspect they also empathise with the plight of the crew of the sticken U boat. Enemies they were but they were all fellow Submariners.

@johnalmason
@johnalmason 4 жыл бұрын
@Orakel Gottes Maybe so. But there wasn't much 'showing concerned feeling about losses of lives' from Gunther Prien and the crew of U-47 on the night they sank HMS Royal Oak in Scapa Flow, killing 833 men. Read 'The Battle of the Atlantic' by Jonathan Dimbleby - the U-Boat crew's reaction to the Royal Oak going to the bottom is described in Prien's own words on Page 34, Chapter 2: "He [Prien] called down to his crew to let them know the Battleship was sinking. For a moment there was silence. Then a mighty roar went through the ship, an almost bestial roar in which the pent-up tension of the last 24 hours found release'. Then there's the British TV series 'The World at War'. The episode called 'Wolf Pack' is worth a watch. Not least because it features an interview with Captain William Eyton-Jones - whose merchant vessel SS Benvrackie was sunk by a U-Boat (U-105) halfway between Brazil and North Africa on 13th May 1941. On taking to one of the ship's lifeboats, he and his fellow survivors were confronted by the crew of the U-105, which had surfaced next to them to admire their own handiwork. The U-Boat's crew laughed at them, paid them no more mind, then sailed away to the north-east. The survivors in the lifeboat were picked up - completely by chance - by Hospital ship HMHS Oxfordshire after being adrift at sea for days. 13 of the ship's crew of 60 were lost in the sinking. 'Concerned feeling' for your fellow man was in short supply in the North Atlantic during World War 2.

I asked my Great Uncle how he managed to fly in DH Mosquitos in the RAF, bombing and strafing German cities and infrastructure. He said that the Germans chose to bomb innocent civilians in London and other cities, and he saw dead bodies in building rubble during the Blitz. They weren't forced to, they allowed their government and High Command that chose to. That is the danger of flirting with fascism: it grows from cosy populism to an almost unstoppable monster like a Gremlin in sunlight.

Perhaps it's time for this channel to learn what a "conning tower" is on a submarine. Conning towers are not visible from outside the submarine. They are located inside the upper superstructure which houses the periscopes, masts, and antennas. That upper structure is called the "turm" or "tower" in U-boats, the "fin" in British subs, and the "sail" in US subs. Again ... the conning tower is located out of sight inside the sail or turm or fin ... and you cannot see it.

In WWII, the vessel most able to counter-attack a submarine is a Destroyer, DE, Corvette etc. A submarine once it discovers it is being stalked by another submarine is most likely to dive. The odds of them doing any damage to each other while submerged is close to zero. The guy in the video that says the British will be in big trouble if detected and that the uboat would be able to pose a grave threat to them after detection is full of beans. The uboaat would have dove away and they both would have disengaged. My father's boat had an encounter with a submerged Japanese sub in WWII. He said, while it was very tense (combat always is), it wasn't close to being in the same league as having depth charges dropped on you...

Funny, because THIS skipper, on the same submarine later stalked another UBoat and both were submerged, after calculating difficult trigonometry equations, he fired four fish and sank it - the only instance in submarine warfare where one sub intentionally sank another while both were under - and it was at times when they hadn't had any modern seeking/wire-guided torpedoes or other modern equipment. He got a bar to his DSO for this. See Action of February 9th 1945 for more details.

I've read about that attack but didn't realize this was the skipper that did it. As I remember it happened just north of the Spanish border. An incredible act of seamanship for sure. But--as you say--it was the only case like it during the war. Although there was an instance where an American sub evaded a Japanese torpedo spread and shot down the torpedo tracks and sank the I-boat which was submerged. Don't remember details unfortunately... Still--cases like these are definite exceptions. I'll stand by my original statement. Good stuff though FildasKirk! :)

It is such a shame that not British subs have been named HMS Venturer since, or even a ship or sub named after Launders. One of the Vanguard-class subs would have been perfect but no, someone decided otherwise.

U-boats and submarines are different, please everybody take that into note. A submarine is supposed to be submerged for the majority or entirety of the journey. A U-boat is a boat capable of going underwater as a defence mechanism. Thanks for listening!
@RodFleming-World
@RodFleming-World 3 жыл бұрын
Correct, technically a u-boat is a submersible rather than a submarine. But by the later stages of the war, u-boat technologies had improved such that they could remain under water for extended periods and could even run their diesels.

@thegeneral123
@thegeneral123 6 жыл бұрын
Factually though, the men in the boats and ships were rarely card carrying Nazis. While membership of the party was done by many as a way to rise quickly through the ranks. There's ample evidence that the Kriegsmarine fighting men had little time for the Nazi doctrine or Hitler. Calling it a Nazi U-Boat is not fine. It's a poor use of click bait language. If you want an example of a Nazi unit, look at the Waffen SS. If you had say, a Panzerkampfwagen Tiger of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich. It would be entirely accurate to call said tank, a Nazi tank. Because it was a Nazi unit.

Sub vs Sub fights were nothing like hunt for Red October in those days. I mean Guided Torpedoes? You could "programm" a slight turn after launch, but that was it. And then you had to hope the mecahnic did not seize up for to hot or to cold water. Germany did use a acousting mine/torpedo back in the early Chanel Fights. But it was easily defeated. And of coure a submarine is not a easy target to hit, or even just spot.

I'm not certain but I believe this is the only submarine on submarine successful attack. AFAIR the German submarine was steering a zigzag course. The British skipper had worked out a plan that spread four torpedoes into to path of the zigzagging submarine. He nailed it! If anybody thinks that I'm wrong then I will gracefully admit defeat.
