What a different area! How cool. And an otter! such a fun hike.
@HikeOregon5 жыл бұрын
I think the concensus is that it was a Marmot not an otter. Either way, so cool! I didn’t even know we had marmots in Oregon.

It was a weekday in the afternoon. I went after work so I didn’t have much time before sunset (it was early April) and the weather wasn’t great so there wouldn’t have been much of a view. I did Misery Ridge as a sunrise hike later in April as well as some other trails in the park.

We can't see the animal clearly enough to identify it with certainty, but my bet is marmot. Marmots are rodents so eating grass (as I think you said it was) would be consistent with that idea. Marmots make a high pitched whistling alert call so if you heard whistling that would help confirm that identification. And thank you for identifying the loofa. I've only seen it after it has been turned into a bath accessory. Nice to see it in its natural habitat.
@HikeOregon5 жыл бұрын
Yes I think it's a Marmot as well. That's so cool! I didn't hear it make sound because the river and wind were too loud.

Part of the movie "Wild" starring Reese Witherspoon was filmed there too as fill in spots for the mojave desert in California. But the majority of it in Oregon was filmed on Mount Hood, part of Ashland and also at Cascade Locks. Great film. Cheryl Strayed actually lives in Portland and drove the truck at the beginning of the film. Wild actually inspired me to get into hiking. lol

I actually flew to southern Arizona for my first official hike. I did a couple hikes locally at champoeg state park and minto brown park in Salem but only considered those nature walks. When you do steep terrain for several miles with dramatic views along the way now that is a hike. ☺
