I’ve worked in science centre here in my country and we have created our own vortex using smoke too. Why your smoke vortex didn’t work may be two things: 1) we have place the origin of smoke below the wind turbine. Maybe you can try digging a hole in the ground so that it doesn’t smother the flame and when the smoke comes out, it will be picked up immediately like what it has done with your flame. 2) I know that you are trying to prevent spewing of hot smoke power but that may also a cause of why it didn’t pick up the vortex. Maybe the fan wasn’t strong enough but a single source of smoke still works the best. To prevent spewing, you can try a metal mesh that lets smoke through and catches the hot spew.

I don't know for sure but one possibility is when you start an electric motor it draws a massive amount of current momentarily, for multiple motors that could blow out fuses. Starting one at a time might help that. Or maybe he just didn't think of it. *shrug* I'd be curious to see if putting the smoke source inside of a tube to shield it from the initial wind would make the smoke thicker when it hits the vortex?

You should see if explosions are bigger in a vacuum. I think it would be because there is no pressure containing it. Maybe set off some firecrackers in a vacuum chamber?

Not necessarily!! There are fuses that burn underwater where there is no oxygen... and as far the firecracker, I personally have lit and thrown a firecracker into a pond and it exploded underwater! (You should try that, it looks really cool!) So if they drilled a small hole in the lid of a vacuum chamber and put some wires through it that lead to a coil of thin wire wrapped around the fuse and sealed the hole with hot glue or something, then they could ignite it in the vacuum by running power from say a couple 9v batteries into the coil which would get red hot and ignite the fuse! Then compare it in slo-mo with a normal firecracker bursting.

I was thinking about how to make a smoke tornado and when I saw a fire tornado I came up with the idea: try to put watermelon on a metal stand/bucket, light it and then make a fire around it. Since fire is hot - it should be able to lift a smoke a little bit higher so the smoke tornado will have a bit of time to appear. Or try to put the part of watermelon into the ground and cover it by the perimeter where the holes are with some glass/other material, so wind won't blow straight into a hole but will go over it and catch the rising smoke.

Best idea I haveyet... take the perpetual vortex fountain and see if you can make a fire tornado that comes from the center of it. Maybe suspending the fuel above the center of the vortex or by lighting some material that floats on water, but can still burn underwater and see if the flames will still spiral from that, whether the same direction as the vortex or not.

Now to make it actually work, set the fan down flat on a set of 2x6's or something so you have an air gap, then put the watermelon on a stand above the middle of the fan and turn the fan on once it's going. DO NOT SET IT ON THE FAN THOUGH! It will just drag against the center of the fan and slow the motor down. This way the force of the fan is causing the lift you didn't get and a single fan will be a natural vortex. If a box fan isn't strong enough, use one of those round twin blade ones with the metal housing you can get at Harbor Freight and Home Depot.
