Enjoy it, Guys! Life doesn't get better than being a Smokejumper! 50 years, 30,000 hours of flying USAF, Airlines, Business Jets- OK, but I still get the itch in June every year and never stopped looking for good jump spots in all the mountains I flew over! MSO 1957- 1960........

Good jump man... Do you (or anyone) know if you NEED a bachelors degree or 24 credits in a related field to qualify for smoke jumping??? A lot of confusing information out there on smoke jumping requirements.

Good job landing next to the rest of your team, but when you put yourself into that spiral, I thought for moment I was looking at one of those posthumous vids. Did it have to be that tight?
@joehewitt835 жыл бұрын
Riser turns (aka bomb turns) give you vertical separation from your Jump partner (you couldn't see in this vid, but his JP was out the door right after he was). The vertical separation gives you plenty of time to get to and land in the jump spot before your partner gets there. If you have two jumpers trying to hit a small spot at the same time things can get bad.

how do you get into this? Is there height and weight restrictions?
@lulem4009 жыл бұрын
yeah, you gotta be 6'5" 250lbs because with all the budget cuts they actually stomp the fire out with their boots. Oh, and at least a size 13 boot.

Is there a difference between smokejumpets and hot shots?
@mariefc85044 жыл бұрын
If you didn't get your answer, there is a big difference between the hot shots and smokejumpers. Smokejumpers are an elite group of figherfighters who must be accepted into the extrnsive, brutal training program. If they get through training, they are the ones who jump out of planes and parachute into fire territory. There are some articles, books, and videos on this, but my favorite is Smokejumper, by Jason Ramos.

What is the green handle he is holding in his hand?
@motofan1306 жыл бұрын
The release cord for the parachute. Not entirely sure why he had to pull it if he's on a static line. Maybe the static line deployed a small drone chute.
@joehewitt835 жыл бұрын
@@motofan130 Drogue release handle. The static line pulls your drogue on exit. The drogue is the smaller pilot chute that stabilizes the jumper and acts as a pilot chute for the main canopy. After a five second jump count the jumper pulls the drouge releases handle and it releases and pulls the main.

@ssmuggler1wizerd8813 жыл бұрын
they do but smokejumpers have a greater range and can get to some places helicopters can't. also smokejumpers were formed before that was an option and change is pretty slow to happen in these jobs

@BillBlast73727 жыл бұрын
Why do you sit before jumping out, as opposed to just jumping from the standing position?? My hat is off to you all, that is straight up bad ass, crazy & nerve rattling to watch....I guess that's why smoke jumpers are the elite of wildland firefighters. Well Done. +Komodo Stevens Said it perfectly in his comment.
@VanLe-nf4ve5 жыл бұрын
Jumping out while standing is like skydiving, your feet are not pointed towards the ground, making harder to get a safe landing.
@anthony9thompson5 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t it be more effective to load them up into a water bomber then dump them along with the water directly onto the fire ? Save time and money.
@ryanders76405 жыл бұрын
anthony9thompson Nah
@HelloGleb5 жыл бұрын
Water doesn't guarantee that the fire will stop spreading and you can't be certain it's out from the ship. The smokejumpers are put on the ground to have eyes on the fire and ensure it is contained.
@ziggelito7 жыл бұрын
it's cool and all, but why do they do it?
@plaidwearingcanadian62766 жыл бұрын
ziggelito takes less time to respond to the fire rather than walking in from a base camp
