More specifically how this works. The fire heats the air around it which then rises. This rising air creates low pressure which draws in the cooler air surrounding the fire. Any object near the fire that gets in the way of this cooler air being drawn towards the fire creates a vortex of lower pressure between that object and the fire, which is subsequently filled in by the smoky, warmer air. That's why the smoke always seems to follow us no matter which side fo the fire we move to! So, placing a tall rock nearer the fire than we would place ourselves stops that pesky smoke from following us, and puts the rock in the crappy spot, lol.

Thanks for the scientific explanation. It was really insightful for me in designing a fire pit. What you say makes a lot of sense and I couldn't really find a more detailed way to describe it after a bit of research. Thanks a bunch!

It occurs to me this design could be combined with a Dakota fire pit. Then it would be truly smokeless. The big rock still in the back and the other stones would line the pit on the sides. The breather hole facing into the wind, with the fire in the deeper pit and breather hole feeding it. That way, if there's any smoke escaping, the big rock still attracts it. Thanks for the vid!

Interesting. Great tip. I have been around many smokey fires.

+Skamper232 Thanks for watching! Have used this some over the years, works great only you get a very heavy wind but for the most part it works great and burns the fuel efficiently.

So the smoke will go to which direction? Big rock or no rock?
@BrianWingard3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. It will follow up the big rock.

+kieth lee I like the acid pear pop ups or any of the northern special pop ups from CC Moore. Those have worked great for me over the years. Good luck this weekend. My friend and I were talking about having a monthly social event out there starting at the end of June.

LOL Thanks for watching. Fortunately for where I live we have big rocks all over the place. I am sure a lot of places are not like this though.

Let me guess. You think you invented the idea of a large rock in the back of the pit.

Someone should build and sell a smoke shield that would be portable
@BrianWingard2 жыл бұрын
That should be easy enough to make. Great idea. I guess the only issue would be the time it takes to cool down before handling. Thanks for watching!

A HardieBacker board from building supply store will work. It’s light weight (enough), can be cut to size, and non combustible.
