I use mothballs and make a fabric rope that holds the mothballs and then you just put the rope around your camp and the bears stay away from mothballs! Their sense of smell is so acute , it takes their breath away because of the caustic nature of mothballs. You will be shocked how well it works. We camped in the Taylor fork area of Montana which had the highest concentration of grizzly bears in the lower 48 and we didn’t have any problems when we would camp even a week at a time.

I wish I'd thought of an electric fence. My strategy was a bit more drastic. I dug an 80 foot moat filled with napalm and sulfuric acid, positioned 40 machine guns and 36 rocket launchers on both sides of the moat. I also had 6 flamethrowers and 88 sticks of dynamite on hand in case the 30 yards of barbed wire failed. That barbed wire is nasty stuff provided the bear could have traversed the 50 foot wall I built around the mine field just inside the 35 armed guards posted on the perimeter. Just to play it safe, I slept with one eye open. From one Steve to another, I think you feel me.

Very nice. Camping safety is so important all it takes is one mistake for a bear to wander into camp or a person with bad intention to wander in. You never know, and you're too far away from help to risk it. Im a smaller woman and I love to camp, even solo. I live in the US so I bring a .38 single action revolver that im skilled with and I always bring metal spikes and barbed wire. I have a roll of barbed wire that Ive used over and over again. I make a perimeter with the poles and lay one line of barbed wire at 6inches and another at 3 feet with an entrance point that has a little bell so I know if the fence gets messed with. Ive been doing that for a long while and its kept animals away aswell as any creepy people which is crucial especially for a woman alone and isolated. If im on edge because of something, I'll have extra barbed wire to decrease the distance between wires and make it more secure. I also put extra barbed wire surrounding my tent to prevent anything from even touching it. All that is topped off by my tents stealth camo netting cover and I have some cheap night vision goggles that were like 400$. The fact that im camouflaged, have a ton of barbed wire fencing, and can see in the dark without giving away my position with a bright light and got tons of spare batteries makes me feel incredibly safe, thats not even considering my gun or knife.

Years ago, camped in the Idaho mountains in a canvas tent with 4 adults, 3 kids and a small dog. All the food was locked away but Mama grizzly came to rummage around camp anyway. I have never been more terrified. You could *smell* her. We knew she was around but having her within ten feet was just horrifying.

If a bear is coming after you, a useful way to identify which kind it is would be to climb a tree. If the bear climbs up after you it's a black bear. If the bear knocks the tree down, it's a grizzly

Bears eat you alive. As someone who lives in bear country, trust me, you should be very afraid of bears. They’re beautiful creatures but they don’t care about your feelings and they won’t kill you before eating you like a mountain lion or other big cats would. They’ll just hold you down and start ripping chucks off. If you aren’t afraid of bears, then its just because you don’t understand what a bear REALLY is.
