There's a ton of different oils and coatings available for this process but one of the most common is boiled linseed oil. In this video I'll focus on one of the many ways to protect the outside of your smoker with a very durable and vintage Boiled Linseed Oil finish.
This process works with all alternative oils.
Everyone has a different opinion of which is best or safest...
Couple quick notes and safety considerations that the haters will bring up in the comments lol...
1- Boiled Linseed Oil is not food safe and should not be used on the inside of your smoker or for food contact surfaces.
2- Be sure not to throw the rag in the trash when finished. I've actually had them spontaneously combust before. best practice is to lay them out flat till they dry before throwing away or burn them in a safe manner.
3- use some nitrile gloves to protect your skin. It's not likely you'll get hurt but just in case they can become irritated.
4- don't breathe the fumes from the smoke. Be sure you do this outdoors in a well ventilated area.
