When MTV first came out I would take our cable and cut it so just the copper wire was exposed and hook that into our Home Stereo antenna and I could receive MTV sound - so I would make mix tapes by recording whatever they played. This was one of the first songs I recorded. I played them back on my walkman cassette!

I, became familiar with this version from a out on the street dj that worked for klos 95.5 in la. Hisname was knucklehead eddie. He produced for me the best cassette of U2 from 1980 to 87 joshua tree. Still have original tape from him. Sad to say he passed on from an atv accident Still i have his original tape recording. Thanks, knucklehead. Guzman, Whittier, Calif. 1988.

Saw Bono being interviewed by the late great Gay Byrne on Irish television in Janusry 1983, promoting this song. I can vividly recall him saying that he was clean, dry and sober, and if he wanted to see flowers on his wall, he would buy that design of wallpaper. Legend then, but what about now?

4:44 Edge just whining overhead, 5:05 Dives in. Makes my hair stand just like it did the first time on 91-X San Diego losing reception heading east to the desert. Did a U turn to Tower Records Sports Arena. Only place that had it. Bought Boy & October too. Never wore my Judas Priest shirt again. This stuff had more power than any heavy metal could hope for. Huge fan for years. Fell out last few decades. All Tool, APC, Puscifer now. How'd I go from this to Maynard James Keenan & $ 80 bottles of Caduceus?

Go check U2's live performance of this song in D.C. in 92 or 93, the very early days of the Zoo TV tour. About 3 or 4 songs into the set, all that newer Achtung Baby stuff, they launched into New Years Day, BUT they forgot how to play it! It took them like a minute and a half for things to catch on, but Bono had to almost pep talk them through it like "one two three four ...". I guess all the newer music was just played so differently that they were in the wrong mode when they went back to the older stuff.

This is the 1st song of U2 that i've heard in the now defunct radio station WXB 102.7, and the rest is history, i embraced the new wave (pop, punk, synth, alternative and gothic rock) culture, and everyone is jumping up & down whenever this new year's day extended mix will be played anywhere there's a new wave party going on, the preppy type guys, the gothic emo, eyelids with the blackest eyeliners they could put in their eyes, the punk mohawks, the punk rockers like the Devo & the B-52's, they go in harmony, genre after genre, they give way to each others type of music, DAMN!!! i miss that era!!!
