What we used to do, is drive a stinky old truck out into the field, and hook a hose from the exhaust pipe and put it down the hole. We'd fire up the truck, and once we saw blue smoke coming out of the holes, we knew what ever was down there has gone to sleep. We'd fill in the holes and the horses were safe again. This technique lasted for months. They'd move back in eventually, but this gave us an excuse to drive out in the old diesel dodge, drink beer and have a day of it.

Yep. I used the blower end of the car vac. Used road flares - cheaper and they last 15 minutes. Worked like a charm!

I've used this method before and it works well. I find that you need to get a freshly dug mound, this is most likely where the mole still is. rake the other mounds flat or expose a hole and leave it open, if a mole is there it will close it up and that is the next hole to stuff with giant destroyer

Leaf blower at the entry or shop vac on the exit end, you need to open other holes to provide a flow. As for the melting plastic bucket, we have a pencil pushing professional here. LOL

But once you get them the tunnels/homes still remain underground. Others will quickly stake claim to them. Killing them down in the run leaves the dead body behind which seems to repel them for a while.

You should put the extra dirt directly onto the grass, to form a sort of _instant gasket_ for the brick! Much easier than trying to plug the leaks where smoke is already escaping.

We hired a pest control company that used a carbon monoxide generator machine that installed gas into the tunnels. We had 3 “treatments” a week apart. However, after the 2nd treatment, we saw no evidence of new mounds. This is a commercially made machine that costs about 2200 dollars. Each treatment costs 125.00. Worth every penny. The tech developed a “map” of the tunnels and knew where each were. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

"carbon monoxide generator machine" is usually in your garage, it is called a car.

@@jst8922 You may need a long hose to connect your car to pump gas into the burrows. I think an “adapter” can be purchased for this. But you need to make sure the line is completely clear and not obstructed. All in all, connecting your car may not be as easy and “safe” as you think it would be. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

You have moles because you have grubs that the moles eat because moles are carnivores. They're carnivores and dont eat vegetation. The grubs do eat grass roots which can damage the grass on their own. If you don't take care of the grubs, you're inviting the moles.

That's exactly the problem: You never know wheether or not you've been successful. I would argue that the Victor sissors traps are absolutely effective. If you only got one mole in thrity tries with the Victor traps, I'd say you're not setting them properly It took me a few tries until I got it right but I won't use anything else except scissors traps now. Instant karma, too. You KNOW you killed the damned things if the trap sprung. OTOH, yes they're dangerous. Handle qwith EXTREME caustion. Getting your finger(s) caught between those scissors can be a bit bloody and painful.

Install a plumbing fitting compatible with your vacuum near the top of your bucket. After lighting the smoker with the vacuum on discharge turn the bucket upside down over the hole and sit on it. Much more effective use of a smoker???
