Something that's often overlooked with this film; there's a lot of attention to detail, especially when setting up later events. For instance, what happens to Donnie is foreshadowed in the previous scene where we see him miss a strike for the first time, and when he goes to sit down he's rubbing his arm like its numb, a precursor symptom to what eventually happens to him in the following scene. Overall, the movie's very chill, funny, and really holds up to multiple re-watches. And John Goodman again shows why he's one of best, if not the best, character actors of modern cinema.

This film pays off the more you watch it. So many call back lines, and so many details to pick up. I think it was on my third viewing that I connected the fact that Jesus's intro music was a rendition of Hotel California, and that later on The Dude mentions that he hates The Eagles. But I think what really makes the film for me is the brilliant concept of making what is essentially a detective noir film, but instead of a Phillip Marlow/Humphrey Bogart type as the private dick, you get The Dude.

I love how much you loved it. It's one of my favorite movies of all-time; it's definitely at least in the discussion for best comedy of all-time. I think it ages gracefully because the humor is 100% based on in-movie situations, call-backs, comments, rather than pop culture references. (Nothing wrong with pop culture references, necessarily, but comedies don't age well compared to other genres and I think that's a large part of it.) I've seen people get really stressed out watching it because there's a lot of things going on, and the Dude is very laid-back about dealing with any of it... I think you're just supposed to enjoy the journey. And eventually, all the plot threads are tied up neatly. It's really a fantastic noir except with a slacker/stoner as the protagonist. I love it.

Now this here movie I'm about to unfold came out back in the late 90's - just after our conflict with Sad'm and just before the one with bin Laden. I only mention it because sometimes there's a movie... I won't say a classic, 'cause what's a classic? But sometimes, there's a movie. And I'm talkin' about 'The Big Lebowski' here. Sometimes, there's a movie, well, it's a movie for its time and place. It fits right in there. And that's 'The Big Lebowski', in the late 90's. And even if it's a plotless movie - and the movie was most certainly that. Quite possibly the most meandering movie in Hollywood, which would place it in high runnin' for most nomadic worldwide. But sometimes there's a movie... sometimes, there's a movie. ... Aw, I lost my train of thought here. But... aw hell. I done introduced it enough.

The dude is loosely based on a guy named Jeff Dowd and he really was one of the Seattle Seven (political activist group), liked to drink White Russians and preferred to be called The Dude as opposed to his name. They also based him on a friend of their's who teaches at USC's school of cinematic arts named Peter Exline, who is a veteran of Vietnam and lived in what they called a dump of an apartment, in a toxic waste part of town which had a rug that he said "Really tied the room together."

As per the meaning A conscientious objector is an "individual who has claimed the right to refuse to perform military service" on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion. In some countries, conscientious objectors are assigned to an alternative civilian service as a substitute for conscription or military service. On March 8, 1995, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights resolution 1995/83 stated that "persons performing military service should not be excluded from the right to have conscientious objections to military service".
