Pulling a 10,000lb loaded 20 foot container that gets hung up on a small tree that grew through the fork lift slots. The winch ended up pulling both the truck and the 40 foot container used as an anker point and ended up overheating.

I hear ya😶 I've been pushing it hard still after seeing it smoke a bit and it's still going strong.

@@LetsDoThis321 The 3rd day of owning it I saw smoke come from the winch. It turned out that the controller cord got pulled into the reel and shorted. Which inspired me to get the Apex remote. Which by far was the best upgrade for that winch.

That's the circuit overload kicking in at the end of the power wire. Wire it direct and I bet it won't give

Just put the smoke back in and try again. A little gorilla tape will help keep the smoke in.

Hey Thanks for watching and giving an entertaining comment! What you suggest sounds counterintuitive which leads me into the realm of Quantum entanglement how two subatomic particles can be intimately linked and if I find the subatomic particles linked to this winch smoke in a particular... lets say... an "ice cube" and if I melt this so called "ice cube" the effects of the smoke coming from my winch will be reversed on my winch correcting any adverse reactions to overheating. This may just lead me to the multiverse.

Even with the snatch block that container would be way over the working limit of the winch

Yeah, the duty cycle for this winch at full load is pretty horrid 15 second run time with about 15 minute cool down. It seems to operate well with heavy loads (dragging 10k pounds) when using 3 to 1 rigging. Usually I'm able to pull the full line without any cool down period.

Use a snatch block and multiply the pulley and half the effort on your harbor freight winch

Using a 5k truck to move a full container? Those can weigh as much as the truck empty and 10 times as much full
@LetsDoThis321
@LetsDoThis321 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you got that right! Thanks for watching by the way. The truck it self can't be the sole anchor point, it will just slide around like a rag doll. I have to chain the truck up to a fixed point that won't move. Oh, and I moved to a 3 to 1 rigging to take the strain off the winch giving it near 36k pounds of pull power.

Put pipe rollers under cargo container.
@LetsDoThis321
@LetsDoThis321 11 ай бұрын
yeah, that would work well. But I did not have any pipes to use. I did though have more snatch blocks and I rigged up a 3 to 1 pulley system which could pull near 36,000 pounds of force. The winch was happy with the 3 to 1 setup and the container moved along. I did have to better secure an anchor for the truck.

5% duty cycle... does that phrase mean nothing?! 😂
@LetsDoThis321
@LetsDoThis321 11 ай бұрын
It's not as black and white as your inferring. 5% when operating at full capacity... It's much more of a grey area when not operating at the full capacity of the winch I had sense started using an IR gun and monitor the temperature of the motor casing. Some lighter loads I can run near continuous on serious heavy loads I hit the limit of 15 seconds on with 15 minute cool down. Just like a Mig welder at its max setting they often define a duty cycle that you can operate them in and at lower settings you can operate them continuously.

@LetsDoThis321 I know I was just messing around, I wonder what load this winch is good for continuously, I picked one up today and I'm excited to use it

It's all good 🤜🤛 It's anyone's guess on what type pull can run continuously so many factors... which wrap your pulling on max pull reduces for each wrap on the drum: 1st 12,000, 2nd 9517, and 3rd 7885 pounds of force so as it draws the cable in the load on the motor increase, heating it up faster. If you have voltage drop on the winch terminals it will draw more amps and heat up faster. If the item you're pulling gets hung up or if it's in mud and creates suction the load will increase and heat up the winch faster. If the weather is hot, say 105F degrees outside it will heat up faster. Best is to just monitor the temps. I just run it till it hits around 135F on the casing of the motor and I stop, the bottom back of the motor is a lot hotter than the top, also if its 135F on the casing it is a lot hotter internally. That temp just by my own trial and error can't say whether it's safe or not for your scenario. I do know that around 145~150F I started seeing smoke. I found when pulling heavy loads this winch is at home with a 3:1 rigging and medium loads with 2:1. In general this winch is happy when it uses snatch blocks to amp up its pulling power. If you're pulling something on wheels then straight pull does good. I have a whole play list of winching if you want to check it out kzbin.info/aero/PLkry4__5Qx_f2pbdS5NPkwduAOK1oCIDz

Now you gotta let than winch cool off for 15 minutes
@LetsDoThis321
@LetsDoThis321 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, Run for 15 seconds at max load than 15 minute cool down. I now use an IR gun to watch the motor temps and run it till the motor casing hits about 135F then wait till it cools back down to 90F. Because if your not hitting max load your run time can be extended.

You didn't have very much cable out, so you were at a mechanical disadvantage from being on the 3rd or 4th layer of cable...Rated pull is based on the 1st layer on the winch drum...it drops significantly with each layer......you also lose a significant amount of amperage simply from the Long power wires needed to get all the way to the rear of the truck... just like running a high amp load off an extension cord....it drastically effects the votage drop & amperage draw... if that were front mounted closer to the battery without the long power run... it would pull significantly harder & create less heat from voltage drop. same reasons high power draw appliances run 240volts. always keep power leads as short as possible. Also... most "winch kits" specifically designed for this.... they use cheap quality wire. it might say copper... but it's usually copper clad aluminum.. aluminum doesn't transfer anywhere near as much power or as efficiently. why? Copper is very expensive... if you bought REAL 100% copper stranded wire in a 0 or 2 gauge... it would be more than the average person would be willing to spend... a good set of 100% copper jumper cables is about $150 if you're lucky...

Spot on with your comments, these are all key things to consider when setting up for a pull.

Is the container on any sort of rollers? Depending on the weight inside, and the added resistance of dragging it across the ground, could it have been a pulling force of over 12k lbs? I'm new to winches, so honestly interested... just bought a zxr 5k for the trailer an hour ago. 😅 I'm just going to be pulling golf carts that aren't running though, but better to know than to not know!

I was just dragging this container, no wheels. It was packed full and was very heavy. Turned out it got hung up on a small tree that was growing up through one of the bottom ribs of the container. I had to get under there and saw-zaw it out. This 20 foot container became the anchor and was dragging my truck and another 40 foot container in front of my truck that I had chained the truck to. I ended up switching over to a 3 to 1 rigging after this and it had no problem moving it. For these badlands winches when you hit max load 12k on first wrap, 9.5k second, 7.8k pounds on 3rd wrap of drum they can only run for 45 seconds then it needs to rest for 14.25 minutes otherwise it will overheat and damage or ruin the motor. I hardly ever do straight pulls unless its really light pull, I usually always just put a snatch block on the item I'm pulling to double up the power to reduce the strain on the winch. This winch really wakes up with a 3 to 1 rigging setup giving it 36k pulling power. Here I was recovering a Peterbilt rig, they got stuck in the mud and I offered to help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWi6aqB3bJh8fa8
